From Dobra Tea

Remembering the Tea King
A remarkable, fresh green Chinese tea produced in the famous tea province of Yunnan. No other tea is comparable to this sparkling, pale green infusion which offers unique and inimitable delights of taste and aroma. It is cultivated at high altitude, with long, silver, downy-tipped leaves firmly rolled lengthwise. This tea promotes health, and has a mild, euphoric effect.

Oh the memories! Haricot verts, fresh spring asparagus, sweet corn! A season in a cup. Sweet and toasty on the tongue. The wet leaves smell like the perfume of flowering lilacs, although that doesn’t come through in the infusion except for a delicate aroma. Characteristics of Yunnan Mao Cha definitely are present, but they do not define this tea. It is much more delicate.

Coming from a region known primarily for it’s dark Blacks and Puers, this green is quite unique. it has a strong, but delicate aroma and flavor, nutty, smoky, even a bit of parmesan in there. Even after 3-4 infusions, the tea maintains its integrity and keeps you going strong all day. the “euphoric effect” is that special “tea high” that serious tea drinkers know about. it’s also the sign of a really good tea. basically it means that the tea is so good that it will take you to another place inside your brain. forget about your troubles with a few cups of Dian Lu!

Imagine if you will, that one perfect swimming hole. Deep in the woods, there might be a waterfall. You spent a summer visiting it and the feeling of the water, the sun on your back, the smell, and the atmosphere all are imprinted in your very psyche. That is how Dian Lu Eshan Mao Feng affected me the first time I had the pleasure of sipping it. It starts out clear and refreshing, with slightly vegetal notes and a sweetness, which while noticeable, was neither cloying nor overwhelming. As steeps continue the clear liquor slowly becomes more and more yellow, ending up for my last few steeps as a hay color, and tasted similarly. Despite there clearly being no mint in the tea, it almost seemed mentholated in its cooling qualities. It left me feeling refreshed and going back for more. Honestly I’d rate this 100%, but I’m leaving room for a perfect tea when I find it. This is however, the closest I’ve come.

Sampling at home required a little experimentation, as the first time I tried it I was in Dobra. But after a few tries I was able to get the right temperature down and the steep times. It’s honestly not the easiest tea to master, but I got it in the end.

Definitely feeling the euphoria. Not too astringent, a light lovely green.

Beautiful—wonderful complexity in nose, flavor and aftertaste. Very fresh taste with hints of nuts Quite surprising in such a light tea. A favorite!
