2014 ‘Gao Yuan Chen’ Xiaguan Raw Pu-erh tuocha
Now 17 yrs old (2008 plucking). 5 g in 8oz good boiling tap water. Western style, using a stainless microscreen infusion basket.
10 s rinse— discard.
1° @ 15 s steep— pale amber liquor, aroma of malty tea, flavors of malt, tobacco, dry autumn leaves, notes of smokiness, wheat straw, sawdust, smooth, non-astringent, non-fishy, non-composty, non-bitter, long finish.
2° @ 30 s steep— the leaf is a medium olive green, indicating that there is plenty of room for potential further aging! Medium amber liquor, pleasant malty tea aroma, with the same flavor elements as the first steep, but stronger, as the leaf has fully relaxed. No astringency or bitterness.
3° @ 30 s steep— Much like 2°.
4° @ 60 s steep— Much like 2°.
5° @ 60 s steep— Much like 1°. Stopping here.
Overall, I’d say this is aging well and has become much smoother than when I first tried it, though this wasn’t an exhaustive gongfu session, so there are likely nuances I have missed. I’ve added a couple more pics, of the paper wrapper and neifi. (I see the pressing date stamped on the wrapper.) I also note that Teasenz is now selling a younger version of this, but I’ve still got 75% of the tuocha, so no need to invest in more. But you might! ;-)
