While making matcha this evening (which I will probably regret later), I was thinking… since I don’t need the water heated to a specific temp, could I just microwave the water in the chawan?
I personally wouldn’t do it this way, because… if I’m understanding your idea correctly, you would then be adding the dry tea powder to the hot liquid, rather than adding the hot liquid to the powder… this will be messier, in my opinion, and more difficult to whisk.
I’ve added matcha to water (heated in a cup) before and it wasn’t messy or more difficult to whisk. Although I do sift my matcha more than I used to and the bottome of the sifter would be below the water line. From a messy/whisking stand point, it would be fine for matchas I don’t wisk. I drink my matcha slowly and end up whisking twice anyway so a little more whisking isn’t much for me.:)
But to answer your question… I’d imagine that a ceramic chawan would be microwave safe. I don’t know for certain, though.
I am confused… you said you don’t need the water heated to a specific temperature for matcha? When making matcha I always carefully heat the water to 180F. I do this according to Den’s Tea instructions, which I like to follow religiously when it comes to green tea.

However, if you like to make matcha with hotter water, then go for it.
I follow Den’s parameters to the T (lol couldn’t resist) as well… except for matcha. I do not taste any difference or see any difference in the froth based on the water temp so I just head the water to a temp that I’m comfortable drinking… I’ve over heated the water before and the only thing that happens is the matcha separates from the water by the time it cools so I need to whisk again.
