My other favourite cafe in the world is the Apgujeong/Gangnam-gu location. It’s better than the Haerang/Angukdong location in that there are less people, the sound system is better and it’s more quiet. The concept for this cafe is medicinal Korean tea and it’s presented in such a beautiful and artistic way. The menu consists of questions in a mind map form, asking you about how you are feeling and what teas would suit you. All the teas are ridiculously refreshing and delicious. It is presented on a wooden tray in beautiful ceramics, often with a flower and some dried jujube slices (the perfect light treat). The foot baths are apparently free but I never got to try them. Around the corner, there are lots of good mat-jibs (tasty food places). Look for the fried mandoo place in the food alley behind the parking lot and the fish place.

My favourite cafe in the world. I’m kind of embarrassed to go back there because I’m sure I went there too often and overstayed my welcome. I couldn’t help it, it’s a great space in a great neighbourhood. I miss Plant…

The owner has a wide selection of Chinese teas and ceramics. She holds workshops on tea and generously showed me how to use a gaiwan and gave me a sample.

The place really reminds me of a bar as it seems strangers and friends all know each other while they come in and sit at the long bar table. Oftentimes complete strangers will share their teas and start conversations or I’ll hear patrons chatting in depth about tea with the staff. They also have a selection of kombucha on tap. They actually have a kombucha brew-master (which I had never heard of before) who used to be a beer-brewer and a kombucha that is made from a Jun, a rare strain of Scoby that eats honey.
The teas are selected by the owner who has visited the places and tea-growers, which is reflected in the price of the teas. On the wall are photos and stories about the artisans/farmers. The shelves display teaware ceramics by artisans and matcha accessories. I even saw a green tea stone grinder, looking similar to what they use for soybeans. The staff themselves are extremely knowledgeable about teas and it’s very impressive. You can buy a growler of kombucha, or bottles or even gallons, and I think it’s a fairly good deal especially if you’re like me and you prefer kombucha over beer.

So far, so good. They have a wide selection of teas: Green, Oolong, Pu-erh and Rooibos (I think). The space is beautifully decorated, it feels simple, clean and calm. They have some beautiful tea accessories for sale. I saw some things that I recognized from Murata. They also have some delicious and affordably-priced desserts from Basho in a display case. They also sell some of their teas cold-brewed and bottled. I haven’t had the chance to sit there and sip tea but when I do, I’ll update my review. I bought two loose teas and I received a very thorough talk about how to brew them. I want to go back to purchase some of their teaware. I saw some beautiful blue-green gaiwans. I also want to go back to try their flight set to taste properly-brewed tea.
