Steepster Bug Status Thread
I have decided, unfortunately, that because of very slow loading/lag, repeated “504 gateway” failures, and constant logouts, that today’s tea notes will be the last ones I post here, until the owner’s tech team fixes these critical issues. I spend considerable time writing tea notes, and that time is being disrespected by Adagio, as the time investment is now doubled just to navigate the site and post those notes. Hours and hours of time, per week being wasted. I’ll continue to write my notes, and either post them when the site is restored to usability, or post them elsewhere. I’m seeking a new venue that is more pleasant. Surely I am not alone. The users here are WONDERFUL AND I APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU! But the site now stinks, and has stunk for months, as this thread attests. I am not optimistic. If the owner decides to abandon the site, I hope they will make it “Read Only” for a time before pulling the plug, so that users can still log in and retrieve correspondence and archival notes. I’m guessing the Steepster “Rapture” is fairly imminent. Where are y’all migrating to?
I will continue to honor the TTB commitments, but my notes on teas from the TTBs won’t get added here until the site is restored. Thanks, everyone, it has been fun.
I’m sorry to hear you will no longer be posting notes, though I understand your reasoning. Those phantom notes you mention have been part of Steepster for years. However, the site has been incredibly slow and buggy since the last big Steepster freeze. I haven’t had issues logging in (yet) on my desktop computer.
I’m not aware of a good replacement for Steepster. TeaForum is great for discussing fancier tea and teaware, and users post the occasional review. Reddit and Instagram tend to focus on photos without much discussion. I’m not aware of an app that is primarily text based and fosters a close-knit community as Steepster did in its prime and still does to some extent.
I am with Leafhopper. So sad to hear you are going to stop the notes. While I understand it is because site not working properly (not for me, though, or I am used to?), I am surprised to make such a huge step. If we lose active members; we will also lose the will of Adagio doing something, IMO.
As of phantom notes… as Leafhopper said, they are part of Steepster for long, and I am not really sure if they are a bad thing? For example I think that “Sil” posts them just to mark that they drank the tea, but without writing a note every single time. Sometimes you want just rate the tea, without writing a note and then you have again a phantom note. I think it is not correct at all, but it was made back back then with Jason and his team, who were rather a website&tea enthuaniasists instead of proper developers. And to be honest, who would expect such a huge community of tea lovers on one website?
Discord has the best communities in my experience. I am part of two tea communities that are quite active and have started one for Decaf and herbal tea lovers though it is just getting started so is still pretty quiet.

Rosebudmelissa, I’ve never used Discord before. Are these communities mainly about showing off your photography skills or do they emphasize text-based reviews and discussion? I’m not ready to give up on Steepster yet, but it’s good to explore other options.
Leafhopper, it depends on the community. You can have your own “page”, where you can post notes, a good thing that you can put images there. Worse is that it generally works as a chat, I would say it is an IRC with benefits like image sharing mentioned, pools and such.
The reviews are different than on Steepster since there aren’t pages dedicated to specific teas, but plenty of people post thoughts about what they are drinking on any given day, and I have seen channels dedicated to different varieties of tea, or different companies that sell tea. On my server, you can request a personal channel if you want all your notes together as well. Some people like to share pictures, but the emphasis tends to be on discussion. Some people arrange swaps there as well.
