Tastemade Thirsty For..

So one of my favorites YouTube channels is Tastemade Thirsty For. This is a video series of exotic drink recipes around the world and a lot of them feature tea. Does anyone else watch Thirsty For and have you tried any of their recipes?

Some of the tea recipes I’ve tried are:

Thai Iced Tea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3d8l6zcTkw) – one of my all time favs!

Moroccan Mint Tea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RLDDGdQoqg) – another really good one. i like to combine this with chai spices and orange blossom.

Bubble Tea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_gZSaGtXSw) – i make a variation of this with roasted oolong. also boba goes well with the thai iced tea above.

Noon Chai / Kashmiri Chai (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu-ah-jLlH8) – video is great but recipe is way off. to make this tea, you use a lightly oxidized oolong not wuyi and much less salt and baking soda.

Matcha (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAuR6FGEmdA) – already knew how to prepare matcha but the presentation here is beautiful

Want to try:

Sweet Tea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5qmPNof-bs) – want to try but the amount of sugar scares me

Tibetan Butter Tea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za9sqEXC090)

Chinese Almond Tea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9ECxM02TLw) – technically there’s no tea in it but still an intriguing drink

Masala Chai (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKIAeQt6QpM)

This is slightly off topic, perhaps, but I was really excited to see the Thai Iced Tea recipe, and bolted immediately to the Thai Tea Mix listing that they used to make that delectable-looking drink. (I have been sadly without Thai Iced Tea ever since the restaurant near me closed down). But I was surprised to see that the suggested mix contains yellow food dye. Which is stupid of me, because it’s obvious in retrospect that no tea is normally that bright orange color. Still, I’m a little disappointed, as a google search yields similar mixes, all with the yellow food dye intact. Does anyone know of a decent Thai Tea Mix that doesn’t use gross additives just to achieve a desired coloration? Or a go-to recipe to blend up my own?

I’ve all but given up on my search for a dye-free Thai iced tea mix. Seriously, I’ve scoured Thai and Asian grocery stores and checked online only to learn that every single blend has added yellow food coloring. That’s what keeps me from drinking Thai iced tea more often.

There’s one from Arbor tea that’s all organic but it tastes nothing like the real thing. I’ve had limited success with making my own Thai tea mix. I’m continuing to tinker with the recipe and will share it here if/when I get it right.

What a bummer. Please do let me know if you come up with a recipe that tastes similar. I’d be extremely grateful.

Tried the thai iced tea recipe yesterday and thought it was good but didn’t taste the same as the Thai iced tea mix. It’s missing a few other ingredients that go into Thai tea: jasmine, cinnamon, tamarind, and possibly orange blossom. This recipe is a good starting point though and could be improved with further tweaking. It came closer to the real thing than any other recipes I’ve tried and was pretty enjoyable on its own.

I know that some newer thai tea mixes are supposedly going to start taking out the dye (apparently they’re banning it in Thailand?), but I don’t know which ones. They’ll probably take awhile before making their way to grocery stores in the US though.

I loved that series, especially the tea ones. The videos are so pretty and well done.

It’s not tea related, but their Halo Halo recipe (a Filipino dessert) is totally wrong. They forgot a key ingredient and they are playing a Japanese song, which is very awkward. After that episode I got really disappointed and I wonder how accurate the recipes are.

Yeah if you read the comments section of the videos, a lot of people take issue with the authenticity of some of their recipes. I’ve noticed errors in some videos too. They have a tendency to modify recipes to suit American tastes – which is fine by me but they should be upfront about it.

It looks pretty neat. I !ake Kashmiri Chai with an camellia sinensis assamica green tea. You don’t have to use an Oolong. I haven’t added salt it isn’t necessary for the pink colour.

You’re right, the salt isn’t necessary but baking soda and the right tea leaf are key to achieve the pink color. I have used dan cong and four seasons spring oolongs successfully but I think any lightly oxidized oolong would work. I find the kashmiri chai leaves that relatives bring back from Pakistan produce most vibrant pink color.

You’re lucky to have family bring it to you:-). I’ve made it with Oolong as well as the green tea myself.
