Tea Logistics Advice for A 20 Hour Drive?
I am about to drive from Northern VA to Lincoln, Neb. 20 hours in the car with my sister, trading off driving. This is not a pleasure trip, and if we don’t hate each other before this is over I will be shocked. This weekend we are burying my dad and visiting with relatives I haven’t seen in 15 years or more and then driving 20 hours back.
I have plenty of things I am stressing about this trip, but from a tea drinker’s perspective, the logistics are a pain. I hate the plastic lips on all the sippie thermos cups I’ve found, but I can’t think of another option. I also haven’t sorted out a great option for used tea leaves or tea bags while on the road.
Oh wise tea drinkers, are there any tea strategies for long drives through cow & corn country?
So sorry about the passing of your father :(
If there’s a Teavana or David’s around you, you could get one of their double-walled glass mugs (they’re different styles depending on the store, but effectively the same). They have lids, but the rim is glass.
Or you could try a ceramic tumbler (one of the kinds that looks like a paper drink cup) and has a silicone lid – you could drink with or without the lid (although those might spill).
In terms of used leaves/bags, I would stop at a coffee shop and ask for a paper/styrofoam cup and lid, and then just put the used leaves/bags into there. You can put the lid onto the trash cup if you’re worried about the car smelling like tea.
I hope you find something that works for you, and I’m so sorry for your loss <3
I have a metal water bottle that I got at Target. I know it’s probably just for water, but I make my hot tea in it in the morning and take it to campus with me. It’s still warm by the time I eat lunch a few hours later, especially if I keep it wrapped in a towel or something as well. It gets too hot to handle after the boiling water is added, so I carry it by the lid, or use a towel wrapped around it. It works for my long days on campus, so maybe it will work for a longer car ride?
Sorry to hear about your Father.
Thank you both so much. These sorts of things are always tough, but to be honest I really didn’t know my father. which I guess is why at the moment the logistical aspects are making me more crazy than the emotional. I am upset for my family and stressed about a lot of things, but the loss still feels like it was everyone else’s, if that makes sense. I am sure I will feel differently by the end of this weekend, but in a way that is kinda my goal; reunite with the rest of my family and get to know who my dad was.
Anyway, on to the tea. Your suggestions definitely helped. I have been too stressed and not thinking at all clearly. I actually do have two of those glass tumblers around here somewhere. Perhaps I can use one for steeping and the other for drinking. Transferring will be a pain, but not too bad. With a backup thermos for round two I should have enough tea to last about as long on the road as my bladder. Better if I do most of the driving anyway. :) thank you thank you!!!
sorry for your loss prayers are out for you. hopefully you will find someway to take your tea with you. a cup of tea can help with stress. any loss to family is very hard to deal with no matter how deep inside you it is,hopefully you and your sister can heal on this trip as i have had to work with my sister on a similar disagreement between us and we are still working things out. but progress is being made as i hope it will be for you also.
I hope you two work it out as well. We can’t change who are siblings are, but we can change who we are around them. Supposedly. :-) Hard when you have a lifetime of ‘tude to default to. Now I just need to remember not to default to the attitude this weekend and hopefully she won’t either. Thank you so much for the kind words.
Sorry for your family’s loss! I hope your journey to reconnect with them and learn about your father is a successful one.
This may or may not help you, but I take every opportunity to recommend my favourite mug to people. It doesn’t have a plastic lip and it keeps my tea hot for 12+ hours: http://amzn.com/B002PY7AYS
In your shoes, I would probably brew the different types of tea at home and fill two or three of the mugs to take with me. Less fuss ‘n’ muss, y’know?
I hope you find what you need, and that you and sister get there and back in one piece. =)
So sorry to hear about the loss of your Father :(
I know it is kinda too late, but if you have any matcha in the house, esp Red Leaf Tea flavoured matchas, for variety… all you need is a water bottle and water. Pour the matcha in and shake vigorously. It won’t be hot, but it will be tea.
My condolences on your loss and best wishes for your upcoming ordeal.
May be too late, but when I take my teas on road trips I package up as many as I think I’ll need in the paper filter sacs and I take a plastic ziploc bag. I get hot water from coffee machines at convenience stores and when I’m through brewing, I put the tea bag in the ziploc and I can use it again for my next cup plus I don’t have to worry about finding a place to stash something wet. :)
