From Mellow Monk

Yuzu Dream™

Green tea with sun-dried yuzu peel.

Origin: Aso city, Kumamoto, Japan

Aroma: Fresh earthiness of green tea with a yuzu fragrance rendolent of orange blossoms

Taste: Sweet, tangy, and earthy, with citron flavors and notes of orange blossom and rose.

Yuzu Dream™ is an exquisite blend of first-flush fukamushi tamaryokucha and dried peel from yuzu, arisinally grown on small orchards. The tamaryokucha (“curly green tea”) is of the same quality as our award-winning Top Leaf™. Both the tea and yuzu are specially selected and blended by the tea artisan-grower, for an experience that is unique in the world of tea. Must be brewed to be believed!

More about Yuzu Dream™

In Yuzu Dream™, the creamy mouthfeel and semi-sweetness of the artisanal green tea harmonizes beautifully with the citrusy tang, orange blossom fragrance, and rose notes of the yuzu. Yuzu fruit is grown on small, independent orchards in Kumamoto, where the ripened yuzu are hand picked and the peel is specially sun dried into nuggets bursting with flavor. The grower–artisan who crafts the tea in Yuzu Dream™ also personally selects the yuzu peel — using the same demanding standards he applies to his own teamaking — and blends it in perfect proportion with the tea.

My first order arrived from Mellow Monk! Do I need any more green tea? Er… ummm… well, in fact no! I just couldn’t resist once they got their new stock in.

I wanted to try this one out this afternoon, though I am a little wired already from having some gyokuro matcha with lunch. I followed the MM instructions which said to steep for 2 minutes @ 170F — I guesstimated.

There’s a TON of dried yuzu peel in this package. My cup ended up being a light yellow so I was somewhat worried about the flavor, but it’s delightful, IMO. The yuzu lends a grapfruity/lemon note and I am definitely picking up on the rose element. It’s got a lightly sweet and tart flavor and the green tea is just lending a slightly vegetal quality with a hint of berry. Hmm. This is good, I like it! Very refreshing for the afternoon. I bet this would also be good iced or mixed with some sparkling water as an apertif.

I’ve gotta try some of their teas soon.

yeah, this is my first batch. so far, so good…

Did you by chance get the Top Leaf or Shaded Lead? You should try the two greens from Ito En that I’ve been reviewing recently, they’re really good.

Much inexperience here; never had the pleasure of meeting a yuzu!

I don’t know if you have Wegman’s over in your part of the country but they sell it in bulk there if you have any nearby. You could get just get an ounce to try it out.

Nope, no Wegman’s in my part of the world. We are a strange family…one of our great joys when we travel is to traipse up and down the aisles of local grocery stores like they were museums.

Now you are making me thirsty for flavored teas.

Gmathis: I do the same! When I go to Raleigh I have to go through Whole Foods and the Fresh Market, and sometimes A Southern Season in Chapel Hill. You mentioned getting bulk bin tea. I JUST discovered that our health food store has a little cubby of a room at the back with the raw sugar I so excitedly buy in Raleigh! And they had TEA! Like yours! I haven’t purchased any yet, but I will soon!

@Kwinter – I also got the Top Leaf and the Frosty Garden, I hope to try them soon.

Oh my! This aroma – DRY – is AMAZING! You have your wonderfully fresh and crisp and clean Mellow Monk Green Tea with Sweet-Juicy-Citrus-Yuzu! WowZA! The dry aroma – alone – is enough to put me in a trance!

I added the water!

The infused aroma is unbelievable, too! It’s somewhat the same but with a few minor additions! I can now pick up on a Creamy-Vanilla-HONEY type aroma…somewhat like a Creamsicle! Then there are hints of blossoms/floral notes! What surprise! What WONDER!

The infused liquor is a yellow-green with a slight grey-ness trying to hide throughout! I can now smell a bit of lima bean and/or spinach as well!

I’m totally LOVING the aroma both dry and wet!

YUM! The flavor…is…totally dreamy! Completely creamy! Slightly Green-buttered-veggies! Citrusy and honey-esque! OMG! This is better and better the more I drink it!

Unbelievable! I can’t compare it to others! The green tea base is perfect! The Yuzu is perfect! The texture, aroma, everything…honestly, I can’t imagine this ratio and recipe being changed or tweaked!

My goodness! I’m glad I have a lot of this! I will be sharing with LiberTeas and Azzrian – my awesome Sororitea Sisters…FOR SURE!

Oh thank you SO much! I have yet to try anything from Mellow Monk!! This sounds dreamy!! :) Yay!

I’m so sad that I have run out of at least 2 of the other Mellow Monks before ‘meeting’ you! If I come across the other…I will send you some of that too! :) I LOVE THIS COMPANY!

hmmm….I’ll have to go check out Mellow Monks, haven’t visited their website yet…

I want to try mellow monk too. Have heard good things but wish you could buy sample sizes. Tried contacting the company but they have been unresponsive (although world tea east is also this week)

Another awesomely awesome tea from Mellow Monk. This tea is sweet, grassy, tangy, citrusy, earthy, buttery, smooth, creamy, and yummy. The taste of this tea depends on the amount of yuzu peel to tea ratio I steep. Sometimes, it tastes more sencha-like, where it’s more sweet, grass, earthy, smooth. Other times, I get more citrus and tanginess and it tastes almost like a creamsicle. I really like it.

I typically make a flavored tea for my thermos when I go to school, and this one holds up really well in it. Again, my only gripe about this is the amount you get for the price, but I’m really enjoying Mellow Monks teas! I also would like to apologize for the sudden surge of notes and that they are so short. As I’m sure most of you know, sometimes life gets in the way of what you would like to do…in this case too much school prevents me from visiting you awesome people. But, there’s always some really awesome teas that you just have to share with everyone, and I had a slight break to let you all know about some of these awesome teas I’ve been drinking!

Thank you! Mellow Monk has some pretty good teas that are worth trying. I’ve only tried three so far, but have three more in the mail to try because the first three were really good!
