From Mountain Rose Herbs

The common nettle comes by its other name, stinging nettle, honestly. The innocuous plant, a perennial that grows in many parts of the world and that has been naturalized to Brazil, delivers a stinging burn when the hairs on the leaves and stems are touched. Its healing properties are as well known among various cultures and are part of folklore and tradition. Those healing powers are even alluded to in at least one fairy tale, The Wild Swans, in which the heroine must weave shirts of nettle leaf to cure her eleven brothers who have been turned into swans by an evil stepmother. The nettle leaf and root both have medicinal properties, but each is more effective against different complaints. Nettle leaf is used traditionally as a diuretic, and as a treatment for rheumatism and arthritis. In Germany, a standardized extract is sold for the treatment of inflammatory conditions and prostate diseases. Nettle leaf’s effectiveness against rheumatism and other inflammatory diseases is well documented, and borne out by chemical analysis of the plant.

I have so many herbs in my cupboard and drink them all the time, so I might as well write about them. People consume herbs like peppermint and chamomile for taste purely all the time, so why not something like nettle? So here begins my review into my collection of herbal treasures.

Nettle is the epitome of an earthy taste to me. There is nothing that smells, tastes, and resembles the fragrant dirt that lines the earth more than nettle. With every sip you literally imbibing the potent fibers of the ground. For some that may be off putting, but perhaps if you’re into pu-erh, this could be just the herb for you.

Imagine that after a rainstorm the rain has penetrated the ground and fallen leaves. Now imagine making an infusion out of said leaf- there’s the taste of nettle- the taste of earth itself.

love this. I was into herbs before tea, too. I’ve been working on an organic bodycare line for a couple of years. nature amazes me, and I wonder why more people don’t appreciate and utilize all of it’s beneficial wonders.

I had a baby while the site was down! Unfortunately he needed surgery (twice!) so he has been at the hospital instead of home. He will be moving to a rehab center on Monday though he will need to go back for one more surgery in a month or so and then another when he is around a year old. So I have been spending a lot of time at the hospital and/or pumping breast milk which is not as nice as nursing so we will see how long I can keep up with it.

In part to encourage me to keep it up and to help me drink plenty of fluids, I put in an order of breastfeeding friendly herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs. I decided to try the Nettle leaf first because although I ordered 4 oz of each herb, this must be the least dense because it is definitely the largest volume.

The dry leaf is a nice rich green that leads me to believe it is quite fresh. The flavor of the breed leaf reminds me of baby spinach. Definitely vegetal and spinachy, but not at all bitter. There is a hint of spice in the aftertaste. It is quite pleasant. I would be interested in trying it blended with my dried carrot pieces as well as using it as a base for a green chai with coconut, ginger, and black pepper. But it is also very drinkable on is own.

Flavors: Spices, Spinach, Vegetal

Congrats, and I always thought nettle was a good anti-inflammatory. Mixed with ginger sounds yummy!
