From Tao Tea Leaf

Ai Jiao (Short Foot) is a dwarf oolong tea which originated in Jian Ou, in the north of Fujian province, China. And you may never know the famous TaiWan DongDing oolong was original from JianOu AiJiao Oolong.

Our AiJiao oolong is from one of the top mountain in JianOu, The average altitude of the region in more than 1200 meters, the highest altitude is about 1800 meters. There is lots of big Rock in that area, so that is why the mountain has been named “Shi Ta Shan (Rock Tower Mountain)”. Shi Ta Shan is the best region for the Jian Ou Ai Jiao oolong.

Our tea is from Mr Zheng, who is in early 30 but has been making tea more than 10 years, he learn the tea processing from his father and uncle, he is a experienced tea producer with passion and new idea.

Because of the high altitude, Rock and the experienced tea maker, this tea has a strong floral aroma, mellow but full body taste, hint of very unique cooling taste, long lasting and very pleasant after taste.

Is anyone else obsessed with Animal Crossing right now? I’ve been spending far too much time playing it, or maybe I just have too much free time on hands in general, ha. Had the day off work yesterday and basically just sat around playing and drinking tea.

This oolong was given to me as a sample and it’s interesting in the sense that before yesterday I had never tried such a starkly divided oolong. There’s an equal amount of heavy roast/char flavour and fruity floral flavour, almost as if someone mixed two separate oolongs. Nothing distinct really pops out at me except these two polar opposite flavour profiles. I’m not really a fan, it just seems confused, but I can see how others may enjoy this.

Animal Crossing triggers all kinds of sentimental mommy memories for me! On my writing desk at home is a mini figurine of the little dog dude that sings to you in the coffee shop … forgot his name.

This was very strange. I’ve been noticing that this company does a lot of “mis-labeling”. This tea is not listed on the website, and I have no idea how it came from there. I’m actually a little confused. Anyways, on to the review.

This is a roasted oolong, so it carries the classic smoked aroma. This one in particular smells of smoked dark chocolate. I warmed these long black leaves up in my gaiwan and gave them a tumble. The warmed aroma was like coffee grounds or a deep espresso. I washed the mystery leaves off and prepared for brewing. The flavor was not as robust as I thought it to be. The brew had a subtle black coffee flavor and char. It did not stand up well against multiple steepings. This brew became much weaker by the fifth steeping. The liquor was a pale blackened citrine. The steeped leaves smelled of cooked dates. This was an unusual and basic brew. It was good, but it wasn’t as good as I would have liked.
