From Teapigs

We’re not going to lie to you – no one it seems is indifferent to this tea. You’ll either love it or hate it. Yerba Mate (pronounced yerba mah-tey) is native to South America, where it is drunk as a natural stimulant to increase focus and alertness while helping with detoxing and weight loss. And it does all this, allegedly, without any side effects. So one for our celebrity customers then. (We’re also working on a Mate Vanilla, so that mate haters can get the health benefits without enduring the taste.)

I’ve been drinking one of these every morning at work, and I do feel it helps to boost my energy levels a little over the course of the morning. I’m really not a morning person, so I need all the help I can get not to be a grouchy monster. This goes some way towards achieving that, so it’s a welcome addition to my daily tea rotation. I’m not over keen on the flavour, but I can’t fault its effect!

Okay…so…Yerba Mate. I don’t want to say I don’t like Yerba Mate…but there hasn’t been many out there that I would run out a buy. I’m not saying that I would by this one in bulk either BUT…this is a nice cup of Yerba Mate! No funky taste or aftertaste or aroma! That’s always a plus in my book! It tastes like a paler herbal so it’s not overly flavorful. Based on my personal search for a yerba mate…this has to be one of the better ones to fit my palate so far.

Not that I’ve tried a ton of mate, but the one I always go back to is Samovar’s Peppermint Mate (gotten with that sample pack of a several different kinds). Something about the mint really brightens it up. It’s still very vegetal, but in a calming way.

I’m not a huge Yerba Mate fan but this sounds intriguing!

Thank you to TeaEqualsBliss for sending me some of this Yerba Mate!

This is a good Yerba Mate. It has a vegetative undertone to it, but nothing too overwhelming. The earthiness is there too, as well as a pleasant sweetness to it.

After picking up a few tips from the forum, I took their advice and used 1tsp or just under of leaves, dampened with cold water, then added boiling water. I added cinnamon (prob 1/2 tsp) and it tasted okay. On the four steep, it’s tasting nice even without the cinnamon, but it’s only very weak now. It’s still not my favourite, but it’s a big improvement on what I had before and I will probably finish the 50g I bought before I retire (in 35 years’ time)

As Teapigs state themselves, ’you’ll either love it or hate it’, I am certainly a lover. It does have quite a strong taste to it which I enjoyed, however my partner didn’t (yay, more for me!). If it helps you to detox and lose weight, even better.

Grabbed this bag from a tea box. Yeah something about mate always reminds me of thai tea. With some flavoring, this could be pretty interesting, but I think it’s a little boring straight. Just my personal preference.

Tastes like a mild green tea with some smokiness. I’m not usually a fan of green teas, but am enjoying this one. Definitely also provides a nice little kick to wake you up in the morning.

Sipdown. Kind of. My local teashop sells single bags of teapigs tea, as they have a Café upstairs which you can buy them from. I bought just one of these to try, as I had previously had Yerba maté a grand total of once (in Bluebird’s Morning Kick blend) and I’m not so sure I could taste it at all in that. So out of curiosity, and the need of energy, I brewed it up this morning. As frequently happens, I forgot about my cup and let it brew for about 20 minutes. I don’t know if it was a product of this oversteeping, but I found this tea incredibly astringent, which I was not expecting from a blend without black or green tea in it. It was also very earthy, and reminded me of a pu’erh.

The flavour changed up as the cup cooled, getting less earthy and a little more perfume-y, although not in a floral way. The astringency didn’t let up at all, but it wasn’t too bad with the overall flavour, considering I’m not a fan of astringency at all, and prefer a smooth cup.

This wasn’t exciting enough to drink on it’s own, and not too pleasant although not awful either. I don’t dislike it enough to avoid blends which use it, but I wouldn’t choose to drink it plain again.
