Spicy, rooty-earthy, brothy and bright — exactly what was needed while recovering from illness and returning to work. The box was pretty much empty within 4 days of opening.

I added several grinds of black pepper to the first cups and thought that’s what made this tea so spicy, but nope, it’s definitely just as spicy and tingly on its own, almost like Sichuan peppercorn. It kind of flattened in the back of the mouth – herbal, must be the meadowsweet. I understand the purpose of using meadowsweet since it contains salicylic acid but I prefer my turmeric blends to be all spice, all the time.

#tiffanys2021sipdown Tea #192 overall / Tea #16 for May
Mon 5/10 - Traditional Medicinals Organic Turmeric 2 teabags hot & plain. This was 4 teabags that came in a Sipsby box at some point. I drank two of these as something comforting with the warmth of temperature, turmeric, and ginger. Got the job done although was tasting a little stale.

I got this as a freebie, probably at some tea festival or another. I did a count of my teas today and got 117, but I could be a bit off. Like, some of my Bird and Blend teas I have multiple bags of the same flavor. So I’m probably a little off. But anyway, I decided to start sipping down some of my samples.

This came as a single tea bag in a bag. I read the instructions and steeped it in boiling water, covered, for 15 minutes. The turmeric really stands out, and the ginger hides behind it somewhat faintly. I don’t know what meadowsweet tastes like, but I only pick out these two flavors. It’s mildly spicy, but not as spicy as some turmeric teas I’ve had.

Okay, I read about meadowsweet, and it has a minty flavor, and now I pick up a tiny minty note at the end of the sip. Interestingly, it contains aspirin and was the first source of it.

This is pretty good, could actually use more turmeric flavor.

When I see ginger listed as an ingredient, I usually expect it to be the overriding flavour. This is not the case here. I can taste ginger, barely, but for the most part this tastes like turmeric. That’s fine, as I like turmeric; however, it does make for a rather simple taste. Possibly this is intended to be consumed more for health benefits than for flavour, but since that’s not why I’m drinking it, I’d have preferred a slightly more balanced flavour profile.

As this is a spice-based tisane which creates a dark gold brew when steeped, it has some similarities to chai. However, it lacks the sweetness and complexity of chai. It’s not really sweet at all, in fact, so if you like your spicy teas sweet as well, some honey would probably do well here.

Sample from VariaTEA – this one isn’t too bad. I like the ginger/tumeric combination but there IS a weird after taste that is a little medicinal. that being said, i do love a good ginger tea.

Sipdown (645)!

Thanks for the share VariaTEA!

Turmeric is kind of weird ingredient for me – I seem to really enjoy it in very mild amounts, but if it’s even a little heavy handed it’s too much for me. I don’t handle spice very well. Ginger is also not a favourite of mine. So, I was already worried before evening opening up the teabag and then when I actually did I was smacked with so much ginger and turmeric that I sneezed three times.

However, now that I’m actually sipping on the tea? Yeah, it’s not so bad. I mean it isn’t really GOOD either – but I don’t feel like I’m being assaulted by either the ginger or the turmeric. In fact, I think this is rather floral tasting with more of a warming ginger/turmeric “hint” in the finish. It’s a little surprising, actually.

Glad to have finished off another tea, though.

This tasted like medicine. A bit of a savory bitterness combined with a slight ginger burn that is being overshadowed by sweet. Not as bad as I expected but definitely not something I would reach for again. I wonder what in my SipsBy profile said this would be something I’d like?
