In China, Tea Drunk is a phenomenon caused by stimulation of drinking too much, or strong tea. Usually it is accompanied with palpitation, dizziness, headache, limb weakness, as well as hunger. So When this happened, do not be nervous. Eating some candy, desserts, food can help you out of this situation.
Reason to cause tea drunk
1: People are much more likely to feel drunk from drinking freshly pick tea leaves
2: Drinking tea on an empty stomach, especially stronger highly fermented teas, can cause you to feel drunk as well
3:People do not have the habit of drinking tea will be easily drunk with strong tea.
Angel thank you – you are always very involved in the forum here and it is appreciated :)
I guess our friends from China describe tea drunk as a negative feeling after drinking tea, and I guess they know best what tea drunk means! For me till now, I though that tea drunk was the feeling of the alkaloids and theanine combined, a kind of relaxed awareness which depending on the tea could be more to the one(relaxed) or the other(freaked out) side :)
Yes. My feelings have never been unpleasant or with a headache etc. Maybe in China there is another name for the sense of wellbeing and an almost electric feeling more like a fuzzy warmth that is desireable and healthy. It feels like a boost of Serotonin.
Would be fun to study!
Sometimes I get feelings of calmness, openness and absolute euphoria from drinking tea. The strange thing is that it only happens to me when I drink white tea or Japanese green tea, that’s it. I guess that theanine is part of the reason for it, but I’ve tried theanine capsules and they’ve never had any effect on me. Perhaps it’s just because of the pleasant nature of drinking tea alone rather than a chemical effect.
It might be because the theanine is being delivered to the brain by caffeine which is an effective delivery system found more in White and Green tea. I also read that you feel this effect from Puerhs also. If you google enough information you can sift through the wierd references to the science of what happens and that it’s supposed to be good for you. Of course we’re not talking about what happens from caffeine overload on an empty stomach…that is a different matter entirely. We’re talking about the euphoria. I get that too!
Now knowing the term “tea drunk”, I can say that I definitely say that I get tea drunk from time to time. Mostly if I skip breakfast, and I have had a couple of cups of really good tea.
At those times I feel loopy, giggly, and really calm and relaxed. I am pretty sure that my body language indicates that I am not entirely “sober”, and especially when you have little baggies of green stuff sitting next to you, I do tend to wonder if someone might assume somethings. But in that state I tend not to care about what people may think.
I felt like that the very first time I had pumpkin chai by David’s Tea and haven’t felt it since. Oh well maybe the chocolate rocket…
Definitely got tea drunk tonight! I blame the very strong matcha latte I made myself, in combination with… a lot of other tea. There are eight empty/partially empty cups sitting next to me. Some have been filled more than once.
Tea drunk would definitely work well in the company of an attractive boy, I am thinking…. hehe.
Ok how does it feel to you? I’ve heard different descriptions. For me it’s all over my body, for my friend it’s like a kind of pleasant warmth in the brain and wellbeing.
Well, in part I think it was a bit of a caffeine high, so I was alert and happy and I could have sworn I was a little bit tipsy, minus any brain fogginess/lack of motor control. Just an all-around good feeling.
Well feeling happy is good!
The first time my son drank puerh with me, I offered to refill his cup and he asked if I could wait a while because he had just started feeling a bit dizzy and weird. LOL! I remembered Mike Harney talking about puerh intoxication in his book, but I never experienced it! I used to get a bit foggy/spacey if I drank a lot of black tea and followed it with oolong, but that was probably just a caffeine consumption issue!
Ah ha! Probably Laoshan White or a really good Green or super Pu’er like the 1998 Xingyang from Verdant (I feel it with those easily!) …but who knows. I may be more sensitive due to my other brain issues.
To me tea drunk (or teanebriation as I like to call it) is this great rush. A rush of joy, energy; an increase in positive mindset and the ability to see the good in things. I can get all giggly, calm, happy, and thoughtful all at the same time. I always feel this awesome feeling filling my body and then I feel on top of the world!
I do have a bit of a flare for the dramatic, but still! It’s this feeling that makes me know everything is good. Best when shared with friends!
I find, like many of you, that pu’er has this effect on me a lot. My first cup of pu’er I had at the Tea Spot in New York right before an audition. The audition went surprisingly well, even with my increase in friendly banter :)
Now, I’m no doctor, or specialist, or anything of the sort. I just drink a lot of tea and like to learn all I can about it. So this is myyy explaination:
Caffeine increases your heart rate and the tea itself supports proper blood flow and clean arteries. My theory is that when you drink just the right quantity of good tea (this can depend on your physiology at the time) the caffeine quickly spreads the theanine, flavanols, polyphenols, etc. through your body, releasing endorphins rapidly and causing this heady happiness.
Teanebriation can be tea’s version of nirvana, in my opinion at least :)))
Please, if anyone knows if I’m right or wrong, tell me, I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while :)
So far you seem to feel the closest to my own experience pretty much.
You’re welcome! :)
Thanks for opening discussion :)
Yes! :) It’s a wonderful experience isn’t it??? :) Something I always look forward to. I can almost always find it when I brew gongfu style!
I’ve wondered if my medications amplify the effects…and next week I’m going to ask the doctor. I take antiseizure to stop migraine triggers…however, it seems that tea stimulation is amplified. Certain tea brings on a very nice feeling all over pretty quickly. If everyone could feel this way they’d give up other drugs!
Wow! That’s very interesting!!! Find out! It’s not out of the question, it’s aaaall brain chemicals! If there’s anyway to let me know I would be very interested :)
Haha! They very much would!!! So much better for you at that :)
I really do wonder if certain teas have a certain effect, maybe the more processed teas? Pu’er, black? Greater change in chemical make-up?
Because it does seem certain teas effect certain people more.
If you google it and read, white tea, green tea then puer…the better quality tea’s produce the most effect. Then, caffeine is the conductor to the brain. So, the more caffeinated tea’s seem to be a part of it too. Just look and read about it…
Ahhhhh that makes sense :)
Supports part of my theory, if I may say :)
I’ll look!
Azzrian, I’ve actually heard a friend of ours mention that our Pu-erh makes them feel a bit silly. haha. Must be!
LOL it makes me feel silly at times that is for sure :) Not that this is a bad thing of course :)
I thought I was having a nice rush of tea drunk last night. Turns out I was hypoglycemic. I was loopy and started feeling heavy all over. I was so excited to think I was tea drunk. How silly am I? lol
I tend to drink white tea products, and my ‘tea drunk’ is feeling pleasantly stoned or sleepy after a large pot in the evening. I tend to take smaller slugs from a thermos throughout the day, and this tends to give me the ‘watchful alertness’ I have heard described here.
Not really sure if this is a placebo effect, but it works for me!
