From Harney & Sons

Mike Harney has enjoyed many a pot of tea in the famous Parisian tea shops. In homage to the city, he created what’s become one of Harney & Sons’ most popular and beloved blends worldwide. Paris is a fruity black tea with vanilla and caramel flavors, and a hint of lemony Bergamot. The aroma is delightful!

Ingredients:
Black tea, oolong tea, black currant flavor, vanilla flavor, bergamot oil, caramel flavor.

Harney & Sons – “Paris” (black). Sachet. Appearance: nice sachet, traditional medium and short black tea leaves without additives. Liquor: traditional reddish-brown. Smell: very fragrant. Taste: when fresh and hot, it is smooth with caramel and currant flavors; not bitter; and does not require sugar. Tart notes tend to predominate as it cools, which emphasizes the astringency (but not bitterness, it remained smooth). I needed a drink of water afterward to moisten my mouth. So, delicious initial taste, not as good as it cools. 5/10.

Smelled so lovely when I opened the packed – mostly fruity. Smells lovely in the cup, still mostly fruity but with the currant scent more pronounced — winey, almost. But like sherry, not table wine. I added half and half, no sweetening.

The caramel taste comes at the back of my throat after swallowing. A bit cloying if I sip/swallow too rapidly.

Verdict: not as spectacular as I was expecting. I would like to try another sample, though, and experiment with steeping time. Giving it a middle rating for now.

This is a pretty good flavored tea. It has an understated mélange of floral and fruity flavors. It is simple and unobtrusive. With or without cream, I mostly taste vanilla, followed by citrus, then a tiny hint of caramel. A little cream and sugar softens the citrus and brings out the vanilla and caramel. I usually do not enjoy flavored teas, but I can tell the added flavors in this tea were carefully balanced so as not to totally obscure the actual tea essence. If you find Earl Gray a bit sour but otherwise enjoy it, I think you will quite like Paris tea. It may also appeal to lovers of Jasmine and other floral tisanes.

When I first opened the tin, my unsuspecting nostrils were attacked by a strong aroma of — hookah tobacco? I couldn’t (and still can’t) stop making the correlation. I was sort of scared that it would taste over the top, but the brew proved me wrong. It was magnificent, the first flavoured tea (with the exception of Earl Greys) I’ve had that seemed to have its own character. Plus, it won’t get bitter if you oversteep it. This has been the fastest I’ve ever gone through 4 oz of tea.
