I thought they were a Canadian company, and my last purchase as well as a friends purchase made a week ago were in Canadian dollars. Unfortunately it seems that they’ve switched to USD. So it’s not much of a sale.

I ordered from them just a few weeks ago and my order was in CAD. I didn’t realize until after I placed it that it was USD. I wonder why they switched.

yyz said

Weird, as far as I know they are still in Port Coquitlam. I didn’t catch that OMGSrsly. Thanks.

I sent an email, but no response yet. Monday is a holiday here so I’m not sure I’ll get an answer before Tuesday.

Interested in their response.

It’s interesting how things change when I worked for the cruise line the Ops engineer was thinking about avoiding working for the American lines because the dollar was so low it wasn’t worth it when he spent over half the year in Europe. I had it a little better off because I was paid in pounds converted to USD. But really if they are still a CDN company you should be able to pay in CDN currency.

yyz said

I actually emailed them with a similar question this was their response.
‘Sorry to give you confusion with currency.
We have considered long time about changing base currency. It was difficult decision.
We should have raised the price if we kept CAD as base currency. At first, we considered to raise 20-30 % and keep CAD.
We import teas and teawares and pay in USD to exporter. Because of big difference of CAD and USD thesedays, it was hard to maintain the same product price.
Instead of raising the price of CAD, we chose to make USD as base currency.
Considering more customers are from US, we chose to make USD as base currency.
We couldn’t give 40% discount with CAD.

We will try to have system to select currency. can you give us time?

sorry again for giving you confusion.’

Boo. That makes total sense, but it also basically means they’re prioritizing their American customers over their Canadian customers. And I get that there are more of them, so it makes decent business sense, but it still makes me crabby.

just means someone else gets my money.

So basically they raised their prices but hid it behind a change in currency. Prices went up for both Canadian and US customers (both are now paying in US dollars vs Canadian dollars)- they were just hoping we wouldn’t notice… Agree with Sil – someone else will get my money.

They haven’t responded to me yet. :/ I also had questions about teas they apparently no longer carry. But Even if they do get the teas in I will think long and hard before I buy anything in USD. It’s more likely other companies will get my money.

Sorry for all these confusions and disappointment!

As a Canadian company, we do our best to satisfy our Canadian customers.
Really it’s difficult to do online tea business in Canada mainly because of shipping. Shipping fee from Vancouver to Toronto or Montreal is over $13 usually and there’s no profit usually. (Also there’s bigger problem shipping tea to US. Difficult to compete with business in US)
But as I really love Canadian customers, we did our best to satisfy all customers and maintained low product price and shipping fee.

We received so much complaints after changing base currency to USD. It was my mistake to change base currency instead of raising product price. Because of low Canadian dollar value, it’s hard to maintain same price. We import most of our products, and exchange rate makes us hard to maintain low price.

We changed base currency back to CAD now and made currency selection button for international customers. It will make US customers inconvenient and many people hesitate to pay with their credit card, because they worry about international transaction fee. (actually we haven’t heard any international fee so far from customers) It also makes us difficult because there’re more US customers.

There will be a price adjustment soon for entire products. As you will see the higher grocery price in Canada-especially imported vegetables- our price have to be adjusted.

Because of some personal problems, I couldn’t concentrate on tea business. But from now on, you will see faster improvement including faster restocking and better tea collection.

Thank you for your support and care for Zen Tea!
Love!

PS) I replied all emails regarding currency problem. If you haven’t received email, sorry about that.
