Question re Storing Tea during a house move
Hi folks, I’m packing up to move house. I have a temp-controlled storage room I’m keeping stuff in temporarily in preparation for the move. Would my tea collection be all right in there for about a month? Mostly black teas, in tins with tight-fitting lids, tho I have a tin of matcha as well. Would it degrade the quality to keep them for about a month in a temp-controlled storage room?
Thanks for any input!
I suppose it depends what the temperature is there. If it’s close to normal room temperature, I can’t imagine anything could happen.
I wouldn’t. I used temp controlled when we moved and it wasn’t suitable for tea…temp controlled isn’t like it being in your house.
I moved house in January (in several stages over the month). We packed the tea toward the end and moved it in the final round, that way we knew what was going on with it. I treated it like all our food stuffs, even though there is more tea than food! I didn’t like the idea of leaving my stuff somewhere with no-one around in case of leaks, pests, etc. I can be very paranoid about my possessions though after a few different hard situations.
Maybe box it up and see if you can stick it in a corner at a friend’s house? Also, I keep my matcha in the fridge.
Ugh. I packed my tea (all sealed) into smaller boxes and put those carefully in the moving boxes with my other stuff. Did I fail?
Humidity/damp is the general concern. Barring disasters, you should be fine but it’s not ideal. Just like you wouldn’t leave your tea in the basement at home (or at least not my basement, haha) it’s not great to store it in possibly unfavourable conditions during a move.
You might want to take the tea out of boxes and put it in heavy duty rubbermaid plastic containers. It will keep more of the humidity out than will boxes. This is assuming you are putting your tea in a storage locker somewhere. They will be humid even if temperature controlled.
