Black tea

I am usually the type for yellow, green, white and oolong. Never much of a black freak. I tried a cup of some very fine black tea and loved it. Unfortunately, It was a tad expensive. My question: what black teas can I get that are good quality but not too expensive?

That’s such a wide question I think it would be best if we could narrow it down. Do you know the name of the tea, or at least the type (Ceylon, Keemun, etc.)? That way it will be much easier to recommend teas with similar flavors. So many places sell good quality tea I wouldn’t know where to start.

Thanks. I think it was a type of pu erh. But there are so many types from so many different companies I wouldn’t know where to begin. Some cheap pu erh that i have tried is no good. But I guess same comes with all tea.I would rather buy something knowing a tea lover has recommended it. So even though I don’t exactly want to pay a fortune for my tea I know it is not gumboot tea from a supermarket shelf. No pressure.

I see. Well I’m not a pu’erh aficionado and I’m sure they’ll have a bunch of suggestions. But I’ve purchased from puerh shop and been very happy. http://www.puerhshop.com
I would suggest you check out the Sheng or Shou thread and follow some of those people to see what they’re enjoying.

If you think it was puerh – mandala has a sample pack now on puerh that would let you try a few…

Do you remember what black teas you’ve already tried? Perhaps there was a specific region you didn’t care for.

Some info for you.
(Though I personally enjoy the Yun Nan Dian Hong and Keemun from that company.)

You could try a good Assam or a proper single estate Ceylon to see if it’s something you’d fancy. (monsoon teahill company in the UK sells superb single estate Ceylon tea – they are yummie!)

good luck on your hunt!

I’m not that experienced with pu-erh but these threads might give you some ideas. A nice place to start with pu-erh is http://yunnansourcing.com
They offer many pu-erhs in sample sizes.

I put up a list of black teas for someone else recently. Let me see if I can find it.

It really depends what you tried and liked, unfortunately. If it was puerh, there may be other black teas you like, but they are still separate types of tea. You may also have tried a sheng/raw puerh which doesn’t really taste like black tea at all (which is why I don’t like it, hah). It seems more likely given your tastes that you would prefer sheng, but there are no rules.
