Personal Rating Scale

Each of us seem to interpret the rating scale differently, I thought it would be fun to post your personal scale here, that way we can see what the score means to you.

Here is mine:
100-Must have on hand, it is one of my favorite teas
85-99-Really good teas, like exquisitely good
65-84-Not bad, they can be good but generic, or just teas that I found enjoyably ok.
40-64-Not a favorite, but not terrible. I would drink it if it was in front of me but I doubt I would seek it out on my own.
20-40-Not the best tea ever, either it was not to my liking or it was really bland. Chances are I would turn this one down unless I was really thirsty.
0-19-No, just no. Either there was something wrong with this tea or it was utterly undrinkable by me.

100- The best tea I have ever tasted. Can’t live without it.

95- Wonderful teas that I drink almost daily, and will always have on hand. Probably the first teas I will recommend and serve to guests.

90- Teas I greatly enjoy and will restock often, though I may not always have them on hand.

80 – Good teas that I may purchase occasionally, or drink when I’m in the mood. Perhaps seasonal teas.

70- Enjoyable teas. I wouldn’t turn down a cup but may have to be in the mood to consider. Probably not a consistent in my cupboard.

60- I finished my cup/sample but wouldn’t purchase, and would turn down a cup if there were any other options.

50- Didn’t finish the cup. Would not drink again if offered a cup.

1- Nothing could make me try this tea again. And it has probably reduced my opinion of the entire company.

> 90: superior tea that I will seek out again. Worth a premium price
80 to 89: High quality tea that I will consider for re-purchase.
70-79: good tea but not something that I’m likely to try again.
65: Generic supermarket tea (e.g. Salada).
< 65: Probably didn’t finish the cup.

This is pretty similar to the grade system used in school (> 90 = A, etc.). I was always a hard grader, so I think I’ve only rated 2 or 3 teas above 95.

0-15 Yuck, not even drinkable.
16-30 Disappointing, not really inclined to give it a second try.
31-45 Disappointing, but maybe there’s potential? Worth one more try, prepped differently.
46-60 Mediocre, not terrible but not memorable.
61-75 Not bad. I’ll definitely finish what I have and might buy again.
76-90 Very enjoyable. Tasty, complex, it’ll keep me coming back.
91-100 BEST! I love everything about it and I will drink it forever.

I’m just starting out, but I see 50 as the neutral point. Not good, but not bad. Around 75 I’m getting really excited and around 35 I’m probably regretting making a full mug.

I am loving seeing everyone’s interpretations of the scale, it is so fascinating how we are all a little different :)

From my profile, I’ve been using this scale for years now:

81 – 100: These are great teas, I love them, regularly stock them or savour them as unique treats.
71 – 80: These are solid. I drink them, I like them, I may or may not keep them on hand regularly. This is still good stuff.
61 – 70: Just okay. I can drink it, but it doesn’t stand out to me. Might be lower quality, not to my taste, or outside my comfort zone.
41 – 60: Not likely to keep drinking…hoping hubby will enjoy!
0 – 40: No thank you, please. Take it away and don’t make me finish the cup.

Reading the comments about similarity to school grading I think that is where mine comes from as well. If you’re below 50, you’ve essentially failed. There are degrees of failure, but all of it is bad for me. Most of my ratings now cluster in the 60s and 70s for okay to pretty good tea. Some of my older ratings are higher because I was more generous at first but without being able to try the tea again, it seems unfair to change them based on ooooold memories.
