10 Tasting Notes

Ancient Forest from Zhi Tea
99

OMG this tea is incredible. I got distracted and steeped for 6 minutes. It was really, really dark, so I added a bit of milk (which I don’t usually do). I’m not sure my palate is refined enough to detect all of the different tastes that came through, but I can say the flavors are deep and varied. Very smooth and naturally sweet — not a hint of bitterness. I did a second steep for 4 minutes and drank without milk. Still sooo good. I think I’ve found my new breakfast tea. So far, the first two I’ve tried from my Zhi Tea purchase have been amazing. Can’t wait to try the others.

Mango Black from Zhi Tea
96

I stopped by the Zhi store this afternoon and picked up a slew of samples, but I bought a whole tin of this one. Tea and mangoes are two of my most favorite things, so I took a chance.

It’s a beautiful, warm day in Austin, so I took the many recommendations from Zhi’s website and made this iced. 3 teaspoons in a 24 oz. teapot for 4 minutes. All I can say is… wow. This is the best iced tea I’ve ever had. My husband and I drank it all. Quickly. I just did a second steep from the same leaves. Still good, but not quite as mango-ey.

Maybe I’ll try it hot in the morning and update.

Pu-erh 'A' from Teance
67

My first pu-erh. I like it, but this must be a weak batch. Maybe 5 years isn’t long enough to age well? It mostly tastes like, well… water. Earthy and healthy water, but not much flavor. I’m on the third steep, and letting it go much longer, but it’s still too mild. Despite that, it does make me feel good after drinking it, satisfied in some abstract way. I’ll definitely use up what I have and then move on to another pu-erh.

Earl Grey from Rishi Tea
51

I really like Earl Greys, but this one is just too harsh. Too heavy on the bergamot for my tastes. I’ve experimented with using less tea, lower temps, shorter steepings… hoping I’d find the sweet spot, but this one just isn’t for me.

Earl Grey from St. Dalfour

When I drink bagged tea, this is usually it. I keep it in my purse, my desk at work and the glove box in my car, just in case. It is actually better than most loose Earl Greys I’ve tried. The black tea base is just perfect for my tastes – not too weak, not too strong. Very fresh tasting.

Te Med Rabarber - Vaniljsmak from IKEA
83

I didn’t expect much, given how cheap it was, but it’s become a favorite of mine. Very subtle – - people who like a strong black tea might be bored. It’s also very forgiving. I can get distracted by my toddler, give it an EXTRA long steep, and it still tastes great.

Definite yuck. Tastes like I’m drinking my great grandmother’s perfume.
