Tai Ping Hou Kui is one of China’s Ten Famous tea. This tea has won many awards, the most recent being the “King of Tea” award in China Tea Exhibition 2004. Our Tai Ping Hou Kui is from Hou Keng village, located at the foothill of Tai Ping county. In the same way that Xihu area is known to produce the best Long Jing, Hou Keng village is where the highest grade of Hou Kui is produced. To ensure its authenticity, we will provide an anti-fake label issued by Quality Control Department (for 100 grams and above only).

Monkey Chief, Monkey King, Monkey tea

Taste:
The taste is wonderfully complex. The liquor has a lingering, sweet aftertaste with a hint of flowery overtones.

Appearance:
The tea leaves are fully hand-crafted and truly a sensational work of art. Huge and flat tea leaves with criss-cross pattern on them. The shape is like the tip of a spear and part of the stems are reddish in color.

Origin:
Hou Keng Village (Tai Ping County), An Hui Province

I picked up this tea during a visit to the Cha Guan shop in August 2009. I’m enjoying a cup today six months later and it hasn’t lost any of its vibrance. This is a very unique tea—the leaves are very long and flat, and while it is a Chinese green, it has a vegetal taste that is more reminiscent of Japanese senchas or even gyokuro.

It is a fairly sensitive tea that can be prone to bitterness if brewed too long/too hot and it also doesn’t hold up to longer gong fu sessions well. However, it is a wonderful tea for special occasions.
