From DAVIDsTEA

Bake it till you make it.

If you ask us, lemon pound cake is an unbeatable teatime snack. Buttery, tangy and not too sweet, it’s the perfect complement to our favourite cuppa. So, why don’t we have it more often? The answer is all in the name…The traditional recipe calls for a pound of sugar AND a pound of butter. No wonder it tastes so good. Luckily, our version is a little bit lighter – without sacrificing on flavour. We take a base of smooth-drinking oolong, then add fresh lemongrass, fruity lemon and a decadent touch of creaminess. Now that’s a treat you can enjoy all day, every day.

Ingredients: Oolong, lemongrass, lemon peel, sunflower blossom, white hibiscus, natural and artificial poundcake and lemon flavour.

When this initially came out, I was skeptical about trying it for various reasons. Firstly, lemongrass found in tea can be very hit-or-miss, depending on the quality. Some tastes divine, sunny, and Froot Loop-like, while others are dry and hay-like. Secondly, I doubted an oolong blend could come close to tasting like lemon pound cake given the anticipated base notes. Thirdly, I got a little oolong’d out a while back after going crazy on them, so I haven’t been compelled to drink them.

But was I ever wrong. This seriously tastes like lemon cake. I made it iced and while the base was initially lending a green, slightly floral vibe alongside lemon, distracting me from any vanilla, creaminess, or cake, as I kept sipping on this, and taking really small sips, I could start to taste more of the cake aspect hidden underneath. It now makes me want a lemon poppyseed muffin, to be frank.

I’m curious how it would be hot, and as an iced and/or hot latte. The whole damn works. This needs to happen in my life, eventually.

I’m not a fan of oolongs but I keep getting sucked into trying them. With yummy names like “lemon pound cake” how can I resist?! I got a sample size of this in store and I’m surprised to say it is pretty good! I’m getting a lot of bright lemon/lemongrass flavoring and none of the cardboard flatness that I tend to get with oolongs. There is a little tang at the end of the sip, but most of it is lovely light lemon, like the scent of a lemon, not the taste of the fruit. I totally neglected this tea while steeping and left it sitting for several minutes, but it seems to deal with the abuse well. Although I’m enjoying this tea, I don’t think I would stock it in my cupboard, but it has been a fun tea to try.

This tea is buttery, smooth, lemony, and light. I can hardly taste the oolong tea base, which is a good thing for me because oolong is among my least favourite types of tea. This tea is extremely easy-to-drink and inoffensive, making it easy to see why DAVIDsTEA decided to bring it back as a TOTM. This is a blend I regularly fall back on when I’m not sure of what to drink; you truly can’t go wrong with this one.

(DavidsTea 50)

50 different DavidsTeas already! And I’ve barely scratched the surface. I wonder how many I actually have around here – 300? (Ok, checked my out of date spreadsheet, which has approx 380 on the list which includes some sipped down teas and duplicates…. I’m almost certainly too low at 300. 350?)

Anyhow, just picked up 50g of this but maybe should have looked at the spreadsheet first, because it’s informing me that I have not one, but two bags of this, one of which is a close-to-full 50g. Oops. Well, it’s a favourite, so that’s fine.

Had a nice fresh cup of this while working this afternoon, and it was wonderfully bright and lemony, and although I didn’t taste it a great deal, the aroma was delightfully sweet and cakey. One of those teas where I kept catching a whiff, even once the mug was empty, and salivating a little (cream earl greys have a similar effect, as does lavender). Anyways, yum.

Just having a cup of this now, the last of my stash of it. I’ll have to pick up some more soon. It’s an. Online exclusive right now.

350 Davids teas?!?! whoa. haha

Kittenna

Yeah, it’s rather crazy that I have so many. Quite a few are sample-size, though.

@Autistic Goblin – Definitely get more before it goes away!! Yum.

I tried this in store when it was a tea of the day and I absolutely loved it, so I bought some to try at home. I have tried 3 times to recapture the yumminess I tasted but seem unable to recreate the tea as I remember it. At home it brews up with a mild creamy lemony-ish taste, but too light. I still like it but I wish I could get more taste from this.

I underleafed this as per Evol Ving Ness’ recommendation and added a splash of milk as recommended by Roswell Strange. Though this is certainly better than the time(s?) I had this previously, it is still not my favorite. The lemon is a little gentler and little creamier so this is much closer to lemon pound cake than I have had previously. Actually, the more I drink, the more this grows on me. I suppose there is hope for it yet. Thank you Evol Ving Ness and Roswell Strange for the tips!

This tea is delicious…have I had it before? Pretty sure I never had it when it was out for Mother’s Day last year…found about it too late, somehow. Yet. all I taste is deja vu and familiarity.

Is it pound cake-y? Not really, but it is a lovely creamy lemon and vanilla oolong that sits well with me. I had this unsweetened and without milk, but I may indulge and have it as a latte sometime.

I don’t remember this one from last year at all, but it is SO good!

I was bummed about missing this tea last year as it sold out incredibly quickly (I’m serious, it was gone in three days) so here’s to second chances. ;)

The lemon flavouring is more like a lemon candy without the tart sourness of the citric acid, which is thanks to using lemongrass as their main flavouring agent, I think. An oolong was a good choice of base for this tea, its natural sweetness, particularly as it cools off work with the vanilla to give it a nice cakey flavour. Two thumbs up!
