Mr. He was extremely proud to unveil his latest experiment when we visited his farm in Laoshan Village at the beginning of November. We have consistently told him that his family is free to innovate and try out any ideas because we will buy up the results. This incredible new offering is a labor of love, with Mr. He carefully rolling the tea by hand into tighter bilochun-like curls. His hunch was that the deeper more savory flavors that come out in bilochun rolling would bring out the best in Laoshan green. We wholeheartedly agree.

This tea is made from fresh-picked leaves and buds for a sweet grassy flavor. The hand rolling gives the tea a much longer steeping life than traditional Laoshan Green, and a more savory full-bodied base note. Mr He told us that if this tea is well-received, he will try making a bilochun-style hand rolled Laoshan Black. It is exciting to be able to support projects in innovation like this one that not only benefit us tea drinkers and the He family, but advance the state of tea in general and keep challenging producers to bring out the best in their specific terroir.

I am drinking the 2015 Autumn Laoshan Bilochun that just arrived a few days ago, and it is absolutely gorgeous. Lovely, delicate, tiny little leaves, bright green when steeped, vibrant & flavorful. Definitely one of my favorite greens. Also ordered the Laoshan flat pressed, as well as the Laoshan green; had the flat pressed last night (didn’t review it separately though, but I think I will soon) and it was also wonderful. Probably a tad bit sweeter and gentler than the Bilochun. The He family produces some wonderful green tea.

Additional notes: This one is from StarFevre! Thanks so much because I think I’m in… tea… heaven. An unopened package and oh wow it is so so tasty still! I would imagine this poor tea is older, but luckily it’s still divine. I guess if you think of how often you have to open a package to take the leaves out, that alone might age a tea. I can’t imagine how amazing it was fresh but I’m so happy this one is so good! It really uplifted my day. The Verdant Laoshan in any form is my essential green tea if I had to pick ONE unflavored green for my cupboard, so that is very high praise. The flavor is light and sweet, nutty, buttery, a bit vegetal, creamed corn. The second steep wasn’t as lovely, but I waited until the next day to steep so that probably didn’t help.

Is this exceptionally similar to the regular Laoshan green?

It’s hard to tell as this tea is fairly older now. But whoa, I just love all these Verdant Laoshan greens. I don’t think anything could compare.

@derk – My recollection is that it’s fairly similar to Laoshan green, but somewhat lighter and more delicate in flavour.

@tea-sipper – Green resteeps are never as good the next day, but I find it oddly difficult to manage to steep anything twice in the same day, even knowing that. Sad.

As much as I try to be super careful with green tea something ultimately goes wrong and the tea turns bitter. This was the case with this tea. I tried to brew this up yesterday to have with an afternoon snack with the little one. The first steep was great. Sweet, nutty, and vegetal. A very nice cup. Then second steep was so bitter I couldn’t finish the cup. I lowered the water temp and steep time for the third but it too was bitter. Was my initial steep what caused the following steeps to be bitter? I was brewing this at 175….

I have found one that I don’t screw up. It is the high mountain green from Shang. Every other green I try = bitter. I guess that means I can just keep drinking the blacks and not feel guilty.

I wonder if your leaves were too wet while sitting? That can make the later infusions bitter.

I bet that is it…. I actually played with the leaves a bit and commented on how grossed it looked/felt.

Tea #21 from Considering a new TTB
Yesterday I decided that I needed a break from the TTB, I decided not to post any tasting notes and instead I made a pitcher of this when I woke up and spent all day enjoying it. Hot it tasted like green beans, which was a little vegetal for my tastes so I decided to try it iced and that is where this tea shines. It had that natural sweetness to it that I’m always searching for in a green backed up by a hint of nut. It resteeped very well, I started with a 1 minute steep and increased by 30s each time, this way I managed 4 steeps (enough to fill my pitcher) with only 1 Tablespoon of tea. I’ll have to consider ordering some of this if it comes back in stock.

This tea won’t be continuing on
