Today I got an order of ripe and raw puerh tea from Berylleb King Tea on EBay. One of these teas is a raw tea that is supposed to be from 400 year old trees. All evidence is that Berylleb is on the up and up and that this is real ancient tree tea.

Let me just say that I’m glad my wife wasn’t here to see the five packages sitting at my front door when I got home! Got a new AWS scale from Amazon that goes up to 1kg, and an infrared temperature sensor, b/c I was getting tired of wondering whether or not I had to top off and reboil the kettle – now I’ll know the exact temp. The hope is that after awhile, I’ll be able to accurately guess the temp within a few degrees. (Hey, a girl’s gotta have aspirations.)
Also got the monstrous pu ttb, as well as the gorgeous porcelain gaiwan I won from Joseph Wesley tea, as well as a complimentary tin of Lapsang Souchong. And an order of ShuiXian oolong, also from Joseph Wesley.
Nice haul. What kind of kettle are you using with your infrared thermometer? I have an one too but readings can be erratic due to my kettle’s stainless steel surface.
It’s a Cuisinart Perfectemp electric kettle. I think I might be having the same issue but I’m not sure, so I have to do some experimenting. I was going to post a separate discussion thread about it, b/c I was alarmed at how quickly the water lost temperature. I mean, in a matter of seconds the water temp drops – A LOT. It’s a little weird.
Water should cool from boiling to 75°C in about 5 minutes and to 60°C in about 10 minutes. You could dip a food thermometer into the water to get the exact temperature.
Yeah I’ve resorted to using a kettle thermometer now to gauge the water temperature. It’s annoying to use but at least its accurate. The infrared thermometer has always been way off. I think if my kettle’s interior was a non-reflective surface like enamel instead of stainless steel it might work better.

how much does that gaiwan hold? it looks really wide & flat. (and a purdy shade of blue)
110ml. I think it will be nice for everyday use, though I enjoy my smaller shiboridashi very much.
I havent known what a shiboridashi is, they are beautiful as well. Such nice pottery made for tea
I have the white Standard Ruyao Gaiwan from W2T which is a little short of 100 ml. It has developed some slight crackles at the bottom – will probably take years for the crackles to spread all over.
A friend sent me a sweet card today along with a very generous sample of Fava Tea Company’s Creme Brulee Royale. It smells divine and I can’t wait to try it!
After being away for three very long weeks my wife returned from Ireland with my custom Hedi O’Neill shiboridashi and cups. Shibos and little cups without handles are not normally in Hedi’s repertoire, but she made these for me and imparted her particular look to them: colorful, whimsical, cheerful. Anyway, here are some photos:
Today I got a fabulous package from Liquid Proust, and it is seriously going to test my will to not try some tonight.
A small Yunnan Sourcing order arrived today. Taiwanese-style Gao Shan oolong, a 100ml “baby” gaiwan, and a tea towel. This order is from last year so doesn’t count towards my 2016 budget.
