MIITO – the sustainable alternative to the electric kettle

Has anyone seen this yet? Looks pretty neat.

Since I was confused at first:
there are two models, one that only boils and one that has precise temp control, the latter hasn’t met funding goal yet.

Not really loving it, it only boils, and you have to stand there and hold it.

no, i thought that too. apparently it has precise temp control. the video doesn’t explain that.

ETA – actually, it looks like there are multiple models, one has temp control

MIITO Precise will allow you to select the precise temperature you need when heating a liquid. Tea drinkers can choose a temperature between 60-80°C (140-176°F) based on whether they are making a delicate green tea or hearty black brew. Meanwhile, parents can simply lower the temperature to about 37°C (98.5°F) to make sure baby food is heated just right. The new temperature sensor will include:

A built-in display that shows the final temperature
A temperature-scale input based on capacitive touch"

Even without the temp control option, it would be like a traditional kettle in that you could stop it before it reached boiling if you wanted. Or let the water cool afterward. I would actually be concerned to see a cup of water at a boil. Most kettles have lids for a reason.

That is pretty radical. It doesn’t look any more convenient than my current set-up but I think it is WAY cool. If this or something like it went to market I would consider it when my current variable temp kettle kicks the bucket.

I think it’s very cool but it’s not something that I consider to be a very useful tool, I prefer my tea brewed in a teapot, not a cup (I don’t do tea bags very often, especially now since I’m no longer a reviewer) so I find myself perfectly content with my Breville.

It’s still a really cool idea though.

I think this is of little or no use for gongfu brewing.

I think I’d still like to try it out if/when available. You don’t have to use a cup to heat the water. you can put whatever vessel you want to brew with on it to heat the water. I guess it all matters what kind of brewing you do and what works for everyone individually. It has always irked me that I have to overfill my electric kettle because it has a minimum-fill requirement, so I could use something like this design.

I am a re-boiler so I’ve never worried about the minimum fill (I also usually am making a pot so it gets all used) but the energy waste is a bit sad. You could use your pot of water or infuser mug with this and always get fresh hot water. I think this would be more useful for me at work where I often just make one “perfect tea mug” or a pot for the group. Plus, our kettle is grotty and doesn’t have temp control either.

I really want something like this, but the temp control model (if unlocked) is still not enough range for me. Hope they make it more flexible than this:

MIITO Precise will allow you to select the precise temperature you need when heating a liquid. Tea drinkers can choose a temperature between 60-80°C (140-176°F) based on whether they are making a delicate green tea or hearty black brew.

Ehh, see if the temp control is unlocked and pricing and I might jump on it.

hmm, I wonder if they really intend it to be that range, since it also specifies making a “hearty black brew.” Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Yeah, the wording sounds limiting but the way they suggest it will work implies you can select pretty much any temp. They also specify a low number for heating baby food/formula and a high number for coffee.

This sounds really cool, but as far is sticking it in any vessel I think I’d want an immersion heater more, if only for the fact that it’s much more travel friendly and I don’t care that it’s ugly.

They hit the stretch goal for the variable temperature model!

and it’s $134 USD. Ouch. I think I rather buy a bunch of pu’er cakes instead.

I don’t think I could justify that expense especially since I already own the Breville One-Touch PLUS I want to get the CrafTea Maker (the chai brewer) … I don’t think I can justify this too. :(

lol, yes – well, you know, those times when you just have extra money lying around and don’t know what to do with it? I’ll buy one then. :p

$166 CAD :(

My kettle budget is around ~$30, haha.

I think it’s cool and all, but I would probably use it a couple of times and then go back to old trusty.

I hear you there. I tend to get over-excited about new things, but I always return to my old favorites too.

They’ve launched a website now and are selling the variable temp model for €189 which is $200 USD…damn.

I’m seriously thinking of taking the plunge though because I have searched high and low for a plastic free electric kettle and concluded it doesn’t exist. Well technically there is one I got from Amazon but it’s huge and doesn’t have temperature control.

I think this in conjunction with a glass kettle would look sleek and work nicely. Just wish there were reviews because I hate being the beta tester for a new product.

No hurry to order. The website says they are taking orders for November 2016.

Yeah, there are a zillion plastic free pure stainless steel kettle options if you do not want precise temperature control, but if you do, then there is a very limited choice.

My previous kettle had digital temperature controls, with some plastic parts for water level and temperature sensor. I currently use a 100% steel kettle with no plastic parts – which means no water level indicator or precise temperature control – it does have a rotary knob that can be dialed to set the approximate temperature though.

What’s the brand of your kettle? I’d be interested in checking it out online. An approximate temperature setting would be good enough for most teas.

It is a local Indian brand kettle that I bought for the equivalent of about $36; I don’t believe it is available for sale outside India.

Thanks. I’ve noticed plastic-free electric kettles do exist in other countries (China, Italy, India). US manufacturers need to step it up and follow suit.
