A sample sachet of this came with my last order from H&S. I’ve never tried and kind of sencha before. I was taken aback by how vegetal this one smelled! It reminds me of creamed corn – a little scary to be honest. And, this green tea actually came out green rather than yellow.. I’m in uncharted territory! Reviewing this is tricky because i’m too busy being suprised at how different it is to really pay attention to how it tastes or how much I like it. It’s crazy bitter, though. Very sharp.

Update – nope, I hate it. Hahaha. I respect how different it is but I have to be honest with what my taste buds are actually telling me. After the Chinese flower, this one is killing me with the bitterness and strong sweet-vegetable smell. I love that it does have flavor, but I’ll pass on this one for now.

Vegetal is definitely the word for Japanese green teas. Next time (if there is one) I would use a lower temperature and shorter time. It looks like Harney & Sons recommends 160° for this one.

Dang it! Thanks for the info

Haha, indeed Japanese greens are vegetal often. Sencha needs a careful brewing, though even brewing at 180°F should not make too bitter taste. Maybe you have oversteeped it as well, 3 minutes are quite long, I would go to half maybe?
