17904 Tasting Notes

I picked this up at the local “Maker’s Market” yesterday, which is a monthly market for small creatives here in the city. It’s a lot of handmade jewelry, candles, soaps and other cosmetics, some clothing, pottery, stickers/pins and the like. Because it’s October, this was kind of a Halloween-themed market.

Other that tea, I did pick up some pottery too (because of course I did). However, the main reason I was at the market was because I was getting a tattoo there! It’s a cute little wizard rabbit – I’m super pleased with how I came out!

When I got home I brewed this up immediately to stretch out and relax with as my post-tattoo treat for myself. The blend is basically a pumpkin spice mix, but with some more unique additions to hibiscus and cardamom too. It starts off a bit more tart and almost cider-like. A cross between a pumpkin cider and a mulled wine, maybe? But the hibiscus doesn’t over take the profile, and it finishes a lot more like a pumpkin pie with a sweeter, bordering of creamy flavour and bold notes of nutmeg, vanilla, and clove. I actually enjoyed it a lot, and thought the juxtaposition/transition of flavours was really interesting!

drank Lavender Swirl by DAVIDsTEA

Cold Brew!

This is better hot, but it was still nice and refreshing cold too. The apple notes and general fruitiness come out a lot more strongly which does level out the florals of the lavender a lot, however it also kind of mutes the wonderful creme anglais/vanilla flavour which I like so much in this blend. You win some, you lose some I guess.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts and feelings regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

Sipdown (2995)!

Finally finishing off this blend. I’ve been meaning to work on finishing off all of my Harry Potter themed teas for a while, since that’s a franchise I don’t really want to continue supporting any further. Tossing out the teas just feels wasteful though…

Anyway, the cup itself wasn’t anything unpleasant. It’s cozy and autumnally spiced with really strong notes of allspice and a peppery overtone to it that goes with this deeper, darker “sweet brown” undertone. In some ways a pumpkin pie sort of flavour, but I know that’s just all the overlap with pumpkin spice that’s in the blend.

I never loved this tea but I didn’t dislike it either. I guess I was pretty neutral, and since it now carries some negative associations I’m honestly feeling pretty relieved to have one less HP tea in my stash…

(Nothing against the tea company/creator of the blend though! Sentiment towards the HP franchise/JK Rowling was VERY DIFFERENT during the time period this was created and purchased.)

From a few evenings ago! Definitely pleasantly fresh, bright and sweet but also a little creamy too. Aside from the honeyed notes of the base here, I found the flavour really evoked this idea of a Creamsicle if it was made with lemon sherbet instead of orange. Super mouth watering, and really just the kind of indulgently fruity profile that really targets my personal preferences so spot on.

Cold Brew!

I’ve been sipping on this one casually as I’ve been writing tasting notes this morning, and it’s definitely very interesting. Really creamy and thick in a way that does actually make me think a lot of yogurt, with a deeper, sweet black cherry profile. In some ways it reminds me of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream, but without any chocolate. But it’s also kind of making me think of Yogen Fruz or even different cherry flavoured “drinkable yogurts” I’ve tried like YOP.

The big thing is that it’s VERY intensely grassy, and I really think that’s because I overshot how much tea leaf to use for this cold brew. But I’m finding those green tea notes coarse and distracting from what is otherwise a really enjoyable cherry yogurt profile. I worry, though, that if I scared back the tea leaf I would lose some of the rich, creamy thickness on top of “correcting” the intensity of the green tea. A bit of a pickle, and one I think I’ll only know the answer to by trying it out…

drank Mûres et Hibiscus by Mana
17904 tasting notes

Welp, this is the next RTD to be stocked up on as a commute tea…

There are other Mana flavours that I think I like a little more than this one, but I was just really craving something more berry forward after having brighter, tropical kombucha or yerba mate/guayusa RTDs as what I’d stocked up on for the last while.

Of course, this still had brightness to it because of the tart, tangy hibiscus. But the blackberry flavour itself is a bit deeper and darker, with a lingering juicy quality that goes well with the more rainforesty green notes of the tea base here. It’s also less aggressively fizzy/carbonated than some of the RTDs I’ve had lately – so I’ll be curious to see if that was a one off or if the whole case is like that.

This is the tea for today’s Mugtober IG feature!

The mug is a DAVIDsTEA textured Nordic mug with a really beautiful rich and creamy sunset orange colour. I don’t really care about the texture at all, but I adore the colour. Orange is my favourite colour, and that shade in particular is about as good as it gets. So, what goes with a rich and creamy orange mug better than a tea with a rich and creamy flavour inspired by an orange fruit!?

Honestly, mangoes might be coming for pineapple as my favourite fruits. I think, conservatively speaking, it wouldn’t be a lie to say I’ve eaten easily over 150 mangoes this summer. And this flavour captures that creamy, ripe mango flavour so well with a bonus kind of biscuity undertone to it. Probably one of my all time favourite teas from Dammann Freres. The black base is so rich and bold, too! Someday I’m going to have to make this into a latte. I’m sure it would blow my mind.

Last, but not least…

I had this one as an iced latte this week. I’d been craving it for more than a week, and had to go hunting in our office to find some that I could bring home for myself to enjoy. It was so worth it though, because those warming notes of clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon were exactly what I was looking for. I don’t generally consider myself a bit pumpkin spice person, but when I want it I want it. Y’know?

This may be the only Pumpkin Pie Matcha I have for the rest of the year now that I’ve satisfied that craving… and that’s okay!

Iced Latte!

As far as flavoured matcha goes, I stuck pretty closely to more autumnal or Halloween influenced flavours. I think it’s the fact the trees are changing colours that’s really pushing me into that sort of mood.

I wanted to like this one more than I did. I think there’s really two main reasons why it wasn’t totally what I was looking for. The first is that it was a lot more rooibos forward than it was matcha. Very woody in taste, too. I like rooibos a lot, but I pulled this because I wanted a matcha drink – so it was just wrong place and wrong time. The other thing is that the caramel/toffee notes were REALLY muted compared to how strong and fresh tasting the apple was. I mean, it was a great sweet red apple flavour. But I just needed more of a balance between the two notes in this moment…

This was the only hojicha powder I had during the week. It’s a very dark roast powder with super strong barley and coffee notes to it. I paired it with this really flaky and buttery pumpkin pastry, and the two went really well together. The pastry had a pretty squash forward filling, and wasn’t overly sweet so it worked well with this thicker and more roasty hojicha. Super, super autumnal feeling and cozy!

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
