From Mandala Tea

This is a large leaf varietal picked in early spring. Covered with white downy hairs, the bud and leaf is slightly wilted and gently dried with warm air. This amazing white tea differs from other whites because the processing brings about an aging quality so that over a few years it will turn into a black tea.

A light, sweet, full bodied flavor. Smooth and easily palatable.

White Night can be steeped 7-8 times!

A nice tea, but not really a good flavor profile for my tastebuds. It was kinda like a sweet, twig-like taste. If you like that sort of thing, then I’d recommend it to you :P

Mmm twigs.

Mandala order arrived today!!! Yay!!!

So, I ordered this on a whim before “moonlight” teas really registered into my brain, so that worked out well. This doesn’t actually SAY moonlight, but it sure does look like one of them. The leaves are just BEAUTIFUL, and some are white/silver on one side and black on another. This also doesn’t say anything about aged. The couple that I’ve tried have been listed as pu’erh and have some age on them. So is this one or not?!? Dunno but I’m happy to be drinking it right now.
I’m not one to obey the “rules” when it comes to steep parameters but I did read the package and the recommended temp was 160-175F – that seems low to me, but what do I know….
So I used what looked like quite a bit of leaf (shrug) with 75C water for about 1 minute. Sweet, a little hay, a little mouth dry, but really nice and interesting. Where are the fruit notes that I’m looking for? Need to play with steep temp.
Second steep – 85C for two minutes – Honey, less hay, no astringent, a little juicy but no specific fruit.
Third steep – 90C 3 minutes – The hay is back, the honey is still there, and something tangy (sheng like) strange but I like it.
Fourth steep – 90C 4 minutes – totally changed – Honey and a little malty? Weird – I can’t even tell you what this is like….

I don’t really like white tea – I usually find it either grassy or it tastes like nothing. This is one I can get behind. It’s interesting, flavorful, but I think I need to play with the steep times and temp. I really happy with this one, but I don’t think it’s my MOONLIGHT tea.

Sil

i really like this one

Dexter

Me too – it’s not really like the other moonlights that I tried but it’s also not boring like most white teas :)

Thank you so much, Beorhthraefn! This is an odd little white tea. The leaves are actually white, green, and black in color, all very long & wiry. The description says this one almost changes to a black tea with age, so I was hoping I could save half the sample for later, but there was enough for one steep session. The flavor is great, similar to a bai mu dan at first, while the flavor is lighter: hints of sweet lemon, very very sweet. Subsequent steeps remind me of BUTIKI’S WHITE RHINO. Possibly my favorite white tea, and I would imagine many people would be looking for a replacement. Try this one! Anyway, the flavor gets a little more difficult to describe, it smooths out, becoming a little darker, losing the citrus. Maybe hints of dried grass. I really like this one… I wish I could describe it better. Happy to have tried this one, but I would have loved to try it later. Hopefully Mandala is still selling this one when my White Rhino runs out.

I haven’t had White Rhino, but you might also check out this tea – it sounds like it’s similar, and it’s a really amazing white http://steepster.com/teas/what-cha/48460-kenya-premium-white

The leaves of the What-Cha look similar to the Mandala. And it looks like the What-Cha and the Butiki teas are both from Kenya. All three are probably very similar!

Hi! thanks for writing up your experience with this one. I love this tea and we reserve a whole bunch of it from the grower each and every year. It is also spectacular brewed up grandpa style in a tea thermos. It is perhaps my favorite tea brewed that way. Give it a try with a 1st infusion of 5 to 8 minutes. Delightful. We have plenty more of this and as long as they are growing it, we’ll have it!
Grateful,
Garret

Finally got around to drinking this sample sent by the kind MzPriss.
I always thought to, but I often boil the kettle before deciding what I want to drink. Which means that whites and greens are out of the question.
That’s backwards, I know.

Anyway, I set out ahead of time to drink this, so I boiled the kettle to the appropriate temperature.

It looked and smelled very interesting in the bag, but alas, just like every other straight white tea I’ve ever tried…. I got nuthin’.

Very mild hay taste. I even overloaded the tea leaves just to make sure I would maximize the flavour potential.

I am very close to concluding that straight white teas are simply not my cup of…tea.

Happy to have tried it though!

Sil

too bad..this is the one white tea i rather enjoyed. how long did you brew it for?

Kittenna

You guys both drank this tonight! I was going to ask how it compared to White Rhino.

Sil

it’s different. white rhino tastes like a black tea to me…. this one tastes like a sweet white to me

sipdown! the last of this is off to my tea sister terri to try :) i’ve been drinking this all morning while i get the house a little more tidy for friends who are coming over tonight. I’m hoping that i’ll have time to finish tidying up AND maybe make some chocolate chip cookies…now that it’s fall i just want to bake! haha I love this tea. It might be one of the very few white teas that i keep around in my cupboard. It’s got the right balance of sweetness to it and actually HAS flavour – something i find most white teas to be lacking in. OFten it’s just warm water to me when i drink other whites :) I also really like that i can continue to resteep this one and it lasts for a number of steepings :)

Hillel

Oooh, glad to hear it. I am drawn to white teas and got some of this in my recent Mandala order, but haven’t had a chance to taste it yet. Now I want to rush right home from work and fire up the gaiwan (though I should probably wait until my head cold clears to really appreciate it).

Sil

as someone who is more of a black/puerh lover, this one is tasty to me…though i know variaTEA tried it and found it to be tasteless lol so i hope for your sake it’s more like my experience! haha

This was a tasty white tea! The majority of my tea drinking these days is done with my Mandala Tea thermos. I work full time, and I then immediately go to class after, which results in a lot of to-go tea drinking. Thus, I treasure teas that I can steep multiple times for long durations in my thermos. This tea definitely makes the cut! It was fruity and mellow, which is very relaxing. 2 thumbs up!

This is a high quality white tea. I do prefer the White Peony one that Mandala sales but this is a unique tea in that it will turn into a black tea if placed in storage. Its a complex tea flavor but overall a pleasant white tea.

I feel like this one is going waaaaaay over my head. It’s nice enough, it’s pleasant, but it’s SO light. It’s delicate and hay-like, sweet and creamy. The best description I can come up with is “coconut and cream”. Why coconut, I don’t know. It doesn’t taste like coconut but it reminds me of it, maybe because of the silky texture. I’m at a loss for words here. It’s nice, but it kind of leaves me wanting. I feel like I should be tasting much more than I actually am.

I’ll try a 4 minute steep instead of a 1-2 minute steep next time.

Flavors: Coconut, Cream, Hay, Sweet

I’ve been drinking this “grandpa style” in my thermos. Wonderful way to add tea to my routine when I don’t have time/facilities to brew other teas. It is amazing how a white tea can stand up to continuous infusion and deliver a tasty tea for hours. This tea has for sure earned it’s spot in my cupboard.

This was included as a sample in my Mandala order. It is a very pretty tea with long, long leaves. There is a mild earthy quality and overall a mild flavor. It has a very smooth mouthfeel. Nothing I’ll keep in the cupboard but very pleased to have tried it.

boychik

If you still have leaves, leave them steeping in maybe 165F for 20 min. You will be surprised. Maybe even lower temp

Nicole

Unfortunately, I did it at work and while I did steep twice, I didn’t keep them. That sounds like a worthwhile experiment though…
