127 Tasting Notes

Master Han's Wild Picked Yunnan Black from Verdant Tea
42

Well it has been awhile since I have written a tasting note. It has been a while since I really drank tea, so my taste buds are a little rusty.

I get a oily taste. The smell almost musky. I wish I could get the crisp apple taste like the description says, but Im not tasting that sadly.

Not my cup of tea sadly…

Coconut Cream Pie from 52teas
82

TEASUCE gave me a sample of this. Not as cream pie as I would like, but I could taste the coconut. A nice dessert tea for sure.

2006 Twin Elephants Tea Trail Commemorative Shu from Verdant Tea
73

So I was cleaning out my tea stash. Getting rid of anything that I did not want. I came upon this a small sample from way back. I remember having tried this when I first got it a little over a year ago and just did not like it. But when it comes to Puer Im not a big fan. The fishy mustiness of it turns me off.
I have not been drinking tea like I used to and I though why not drink this tonight. I rinsed 3 times to get the mustiness smell out of the way for me to try it again. I always smell the wet leave before I taste the tea to get my senses going.

A nice cedar with a sweet fig smell. Hmmmm, a lot better than I thought. I noticed when it comes to puer, I must rinse a few more times for me to drink it. I seems hat others rinse once or twice and can enjoy it. Im happy I tasted this again, since it is no longer sold.

Laoshan Bilochun Green from Verdant Tea
89

Hmmm. I like this. A nice sweet spinach taste. Lasts a little longer through steeping. I thought it would taste just the Laoshan green. To me it is very different. The Laoshan green has a buttery snap pea taste. This is more of a savory spinach.

Laoshan Genmaicha from Verdant Tea
95

Wow this is a very nice an buttery genmaicha. Might have to buy some more.

Eight Treasures Yabao Winter Blend from Verdant Tea
77

I love Yabao. Its one of my favorite teas. I liked the first eight treasures and I asked for this as my sample.
I did it for the suggested 185 temp and brewed it for 2 minutes. Had a nice sweet cedar taste. The juniper berries was a nice touch.

I brewed it again and let it go for maybe 5 to 7 minutes. With Yabao usually the longer the better. Not with this blend. It became pretty bitter. But then again there was not much yabao in this. More jasmine green tea then yabao. Best to keep this short and sweet.

Houjicha Gold (Roasted Bancha) from Den's Tea
84

Got around to one of my Dens samplers. smoky, sweet, a surprisingly light. Like their genmaicha without the grassiness.

lapsang souchong from Dr. Tea's Tea Garden
86

After drinking this, I knew it was not something that I would keep drinking. I thought I would use it on a steak or something else…

Smoky Turkey Chili!!

2 cups of this and one cup of broth. Really good. I might buy more just for making chili.

Yun Nan Dian Hong Black Tea – Golden Tip from Teavivre
74
Aged Yunnan Silver Needle White Cake from Verdant Tea
92

Now this is a white tea that I like!
The clove and the floral notes are amazing.

I guess I just like aged white tea :).

Bergamot Rose Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea
67

Hmmm, I have been looking at this for a while now and thought I should sample it. This was one of my 7 samples that I purchased. I must say Im not a huge fan of rose, and I have a few blends from Verdant that have it in it. I would have never have thought of combining it with a black tea infused with bergamot, but here it goes.

Well Im not a fan of this, but I’m glad I got a sample of this before it was discontinued. I have tasted every Verdant tea in the last year, and did not want to miss one…

Holy Basil Spa Blend from Verdant Tea
97

Getting back into tea now. I took a month off to do more juicing. I’m surprised that I have not written a review of this herbal. Love it!
So refreshing and light. Has my favorite tea herbs which are peppermint and licorice. Can not go wrong with this.

Yunnan Golden Buds from Verdant Tea
83

I am drinking the last of this and realized I never wrote a review on it. So as I drink it down…

Prunes
creamy cinnamon

not my favorite Golden Buds, but good.

Lavender Earl Grey Biodegradable Pyramid Sachets from Epi Tea
86

Thanks very much to Epi Tea for the pre-release sample.

A nice balance of Lavender and bergamot. For the first sachet I brewed this to the suggested time of 4 minutes. It was a little to long for me so the second sachet I did at 3 minutes. It was a little better for me. The first time I thought that the lavender over powered the bergamot a little too much for my taste. I drank this straight the first time and with a touch of cream the second time. Very nice the second time around. The first time I think I ruined it by leaving the bag in too long, the second time was the charm.

Thanks
so much for this.

Serene Chai Biodegradable Pyramid Sachets from Epi Tea
79

Thanks very much to Epi Tea for the pre-release sample of this.

I will start off by saying that I am a chai lover, and I have had many. Traditional and non-tradional ones. I knew looking at the ingredients that this was going to be a non-tradional one since it has vanilla flavoring in it. Which I love, because I like to see what kind of twist they put on it.
When I opened the bag that was the first thing I smelled. Well that and the cardamon. I brewed it according to what was suggested which was 4 minutes. I could smell the vanilla again before anything which did not put me off. Instead It made me think it would a great with a touch of cream. But I wanted to try it straight first.
It has a nice balance of flavors. Although I could make out the vanilla right away I could still make out the other spices. The after taste of it has a slight flatness to it. Not as full-bodied that I would hope for. After drinking it straight had way I decided to add some milk and sugar to it. It really did not need the sugar, but I wanted to drink it as a traditional chai. The cream helped the body, but there was still something lacking that I can not put my finger on.
Either way I am happy that I got to try this before it came out. It is a nice chai, just not not my favorite.

Green Matcha from Pure Matcha
97

So after the June Steepster box, I wanted to try another matcha that was not a kitchen grade. To try out a good grade A brand after the steepster box sparked my interest. Looking at the reviews I wanted to try this one first.

I will say this is the first tea that I can actually feel the effect of the caffeine. I can drink a pot of coffee and then go straight to bed and not really think twice about it. This I can actually feel. I made two bowls of this a few days ago and I can feel it instantly. This is a good thing since I’m not a morning person. I feel great after drinking a bowl and want to start my day.
This matcha is buttery and smooth. It does not have a bite to it. I have had the Domatcha ceremonial grade and noticed a difference between the two. It has a nice green color to it and it smells fresh.

Premium Kitchen Grade Matcha from Obubu Tea
89

So I have been wanting to buy some matcha for a long time. I needed the whisk and the bowl. Steepter gave me the whisk and small scoop and this little taster of matcha.

My first time making it went well I think. No lumps and nice an frothy. It is has a nice gassy taste to it, but a little bitterness as well. I have had other matcha that was a bit sweeter then this, but all in all not bad. Might make a latte with this.

Artisan Revival Stone-Pressed Banzhang '06 Sheng Pu'er from Verdant Tea
92

This is one of my favorite pu’ers. I remember purchasing this 7 months ago and kind of forgot about it. Nice to find it again and be enchanted by its cedar apple qualities.

Zhu Rong Yunnan Black from Verdant Tea
95

Love this tea. This tea was the reason why I put in my last order to Verdant. I picked this up with the Golden Fleece. I must say this tea really got me thinking. It is robust, but not. To me it is not as in your face as you might think. I have had 3 sessions with this tea, and the one word that keeps coming up is…buttery. Will have to get more of this.

Golden Fleece from Verdant Tea
91

This is my 3 session with this tea and I must say I like it,but I don’t love it. I notice the texture that everyone is talking about and it is interesting. I am not getting any astringency from it which is a nice surprise from a black tea. It is a very smooth tea and it has a nice morel mushroom taste to it. I get the cinnamon in later steepings. I am happy that I got to try it.

Secret Garden from SerendipiTea
12

When I opened up my steepster box I was a little underwhelmed with this tea. It smelled like perfume. Sadly it taste like it too. I wanted to give this a chance but it was to floral for me.

If anyone wants to trade for this let me know.

Hand Picked Spring Tieguanyin (2012) from Verdant Tea
84

I will say that I love Autumn oolongs more because of the butteriness they have to them. In the past with spring oolongs I was never a huge fan, but I can appreciate this one. Nice floral orchid notes from it. This was my sample that I received with my last order. I did 6 steeps of it and it kept producing good tea.

Tung Ting Charcoal Roasted from Red Blossom Tea Company
100

Its been awhile since I have had this tea! This was one of the first teas that I drank that really changed my whole outlook on tea in general. One of the first teas to make me break away from Teavana. I will admit I purchased this tea almost a year and half ago because of Kevin Rose. He said that this was his favorite tea. Long story short this was one of my “first” teas. Yes, I have always drank tea since I was little but never really saw the full range and complexity to it until I had this. It it made me want to buy more and try more.

I’m an oolong girl, and I have had many roasted and charcoal roasted oolongs that don’t measure up to this one. All you get is charcoal, and thats it with other charcoal roasted oolongs. This tea has a caramel fruitiness to it. A sweetness on the tongue that makes me smile cup after cup.
It is also a very forgiving tea. I can’t tell you how many times I let this oversteep, or used hotter water the I should have. This always produce a good cup of tea. Roasted fruitiness:)
Great for a person who is just getting into tea.

Its funny I have never written a review of this tea until now. It was at the bottom of one of my tea jars waiting for me to open it up again. I’m on my 6th steep now, and it is still going strong.I know that this tea is good, but I think I love it because it started me on my tea journey that continues to grow.:)

Wuyi Mountain Big Red Robe from Verdant Tea
74

I have had this tea many times now and I can’t get passed the metallic taste. It gets a little sweeter on the tongue for me after the 8th steep, but I can’t make out anything else. I really have been trying just not doing it for me.
