Any interest in a (MOSTLY) unflavored TTB? Closed

I recently participated in a TTB. I found some things I liked, but most of the tea was of the flavored persuasion. For the most part, I’m not a flavored tea lover, although apparently I have developed a bizarre (to me) obsession with vanilla. I also like a good Earl Grey or chai.

In looking around at some of the other TTBs, I notice a lot of them are heavily on the flavored side. So I’m wondering….

Is there any interest in a mostly non-flavored box (I say mostly because it would sad if there wasn’t even a little Golden Orchid in it)? I was thinking this could also include some oolongs and maybe even some pu-erhs.

I would be willing to start it out. Discuss??

Here is the list of participants:

MzPriss – Texas
Kimquat – Ark
Veronica – NJ
Dr Jim – Mass
Tea Sipper – NY
Kiwi Delight – NY
Cheri – Michigan
Shadowfall – IL
Awkward Soul – CA
Back to MzPriss

And here is what I sent out to start the box:

From Single Origin Tea:

Jun Chiyabari
Dongding Oolong
Pai Mu Tan
Nilgiri Coonoon
Mokalbari Assam
Vietnam OP1
Organic Idulgashinna

My contribution:

Special Dark – Mandala
Wild Monk – Mandala
Noble Mark – Mandala
Imperial Dark Bulang Gong Ting – Mandala
Golden Fleece – Verdant
Bai Mu Dan White – Verdant
Fengqing Dragon Pearl Black – Teavivre
Golden Orchid – Whispering Pines
Silver Moonlight White – Whispering Pines
Classic Chinese – Joseph Wesley
Spring Keemun – Andrews & Dunham
Queen Catherine – Harney & Sons

I would be interested if I could mail it within the US! I’m in NY. So basically any unflavored tea could be in the box? Or just black, oolong, and pu-erh? I realllly wanted to try some of that Golden Orchid, so yes, it would be a shame. :D

I think any (mostly) unflavored tea…I was just specifically calling out pu-erhs mostly as I’m not sure I’ve seen them in TTBs and wanted to make sure people considered them as well. Cause I’m a pu-people.

Yeah, I’m a pu-person too. :D

And I’m selfishly hoping that if we do one, that when it comes back to me there will be pu I haven’t gotten to try :)

I’m a new pu-person though, so I might not have too many to add to the box, but I’ll definitely remember to add some, if I’m chosen for the teabox.

There are two unflavored tea boxes going around that were just started by Butiki. It might make sense for you to try to get in on those. Usually, tea boxes re-open after they’ve made the rounds.

@Dr Jim – thank you. I will look into those. Wondering if they have any pu in them. Goes off to check

Yeah, I’m taking part in the Butiki teabox too but there can’t really be too many teaboxes. :D

I saw a little pu. But I’m thinking I’ll continue with this idea for a few days to see if there is interest.

Butiki Box 2 (which arrives at my house on Monday) is supposed to have half a dozen Pu-Ehrs. That is the main reason I joined; I’m a Pu newby and wanted to give them another chance. I’ve had half a dozen that didn’t do anything for me.

There is a lot of interest in TTBs, but in the boxes I organize we have a lot of turnover; only about half of the people want to go around a second time.

I’m probably a bad example. In addition to those two, I’ve been involved in 3 others (though plan to re-join one other at most).

@Dr Jim – you should try some samples from Mandala. I would be willing to send you a little Special Dark and little Wild Monk. That would give you an awesome shu and an awesome sheng to try if you haven’t tried them yet.

Thanks, but I can wait. I’ve been thinking of buying samples from either Mandala or Yunnan Sourcing, but just placed an order from Zen Tea (couldn’t resist 40% off) so need to wait another couple of months.

I’ve been trying to expand my horizons from Black tea one type at a time. This spring, I’ve been focused on Yunnan Black and Matcha. Sometime this summer I’ll make the Pu-Erh effort.

oh I’ve been wanting to try the Wild Monk too! I don’t think I’d have enough pu-erh to participate in just a pu-erh box either.

Dr Jim , I’m new to pu’er (at least the raw) myself. I got an order from Mandala and did a swap package with some more Mandala samples. I also picked up some from an Ebay seller. So far the Mandala ones have been amazing.

There is a lot of interest in Pu-Ehr, but it’s a pretty esoteric subject. Would it be possible to start a box that was primarily Pu-Ehr? I think I would be interested, though I’d probably have to make an order somewhere to have enough Pu to replenish the box.

This would be fun! I might have enough pu’er to start a box (no were as big as the Here’s Hoping box), I’ll have to look. All fails, I’ll join a unflavored one and swap in mostly pu’er on my end.

Awkward Soul – Maybe you should just be the person ahead of MzPriss if you wanted to add mostly pu-erh? (Or anyone else that was mainly interested in pu-erh, then MzPriss?) I’m interested in all sorts of teas, and though I’d like to see pu-erh in the box, I wouldn’t ONLY want to see pu-erh. :D

that would work. I checked my stash, I got a good selection, but it’s looking like a small box, which I could see could be hard to keep pu’er only if everyone doesn’t have a big stash to swap in, yet be able to try everything.

Sadly, I don’t have enough pus to get a pu-only box started. And I’m interested in some other things I haven’t tried yet like Jin Jun Mei and some other things I haven’t tried yet. And basically just curious to see what would come.

I would be interested, but I would only be able to mail within the U.S.

I might be interested. I’m in Canada though. I think it would make sense to make it unflavoured but include other teas other than pu-erh. Although a heavily based pu-erh box would be fun!

I would love to try more unflavored teas. I’m starting to get into oolong and I’d love to try more pu-erh. I love a straight green or white. I’m not so into the black tea, though.
