Organic Black Chai

Black Tea by Steenbergs (Tea Merchant)

Steenbergs Organic Fairtrade Black Chai Tea is our simplified version of the Indian spicy, chai teas and is based on the quick & easy recipe we love to make for ourselves on a cold, blustery day, especially if we’ve got soaked on a walk. Steenbergs Organic Black Chai Tea is so warming and the organic spices seem to lift the strong organic black tea that we use as a base.

At Steenbergs Organic, we hand blend the organic spices to Axel Steenberg’s own unique recipe in Steenbergs Tea Factory in Ripon in North Yorkshire. Steenbergs uses sweeter organic spices to flavour this organic chai tea blend – organic cloves , organic cinnamon and organic cardamom . These organic spices are cut to a smaller size – called tea bag cut – and hand blended in small batches with a GBOP organic tea that’s been high grown on the POABS Tea Estates in Southern India. POABS is a dreamy place high in the hills (really mountains to us English), where the water comes fresh from the mountain peak into the tea estate. The other side of the hill is a nature reserve, so it’s a really, truly pure place – full of spirit.

Brewing tip: Boil 500ml water and 500ml milk together with some sugar and 4tsp organic black chai tea for about 4 – 5 minutes, then relax and enjoy. For more details on making organic chai tea, please go to recipe for organic chai tea

Thanks to TeaEqualsBliss for sending me some of this tea.

This is a lovely, warmly spiced chai. The spices are not over the top or too spicy, and they have a nice balance to them, creating a seamless flavor. I don’t taste a lot of individual spice flavors, just a really good blend of spice.

The black tea base is good and strong, with notes of malt and a hearty flavor and texture.

I drank my first cup without any milk, just a drizzle of honey. My second cup I added a little bit of milk to try it as a latte, and it is quite fantastic as a latte. A REALLY good chai!

Backlog: I made apple pear sauce this evening for dinner, and I steeped some of this to use as the liquid to cook down the fruit… And I steeped enough to enjoy a chai latte as well. YUM! It was delicious as a chai … and it made a delicious fruit sauce to go with pork chops.

Having a cup of this today, made it latte, and added some maple syrup to sweeten it instead of honey. Yummy.
