568 Tasting Notes

The Perfect Pear from Della Terra Teas
89

I steeped this for much longer than I should have! I got distracted at work and my tea suffered for it. Although, not too bad, this tea is pretty tough! I ordered more as I really enjoy this iced and there was a sale… So I had to get it, plus I had to try the new Della Terra Teas, right?!

This is very pleasant, and reminds me of summer. Yum!

Carrot Cake from DAVIDsTEA
95

I love this tea! It’s so delish! I’m glad I stocked up since it’s being discontinued. I can’t imagine how I will cope when my stash is completely empty!

Please see other notes, this is a cupboard fave. :)

Moroccan Mint from Della Terra Teas
85

Can’t go wrong with a Moroccan Mint, especially to clear the palate after The Skinny Incident.

This is a hearty blend of cooling mint and gunpowder green. It’s one of my fave tea combos and this delivers. :)

The Skinny (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
36

This is a tough one for me. I tried it iced and hated it! So I opted for hot tea with this infusion and the verdict’s in… it’s still just OK. Nothing to write home about. This may be my intolerance of pu-erh. I’m trying, folks, but it’s not an easy path. Pu-erh just reminds me of dirt, and not in a cool, earthy way like the Demeter perfume/fragrance. Like a mud pie made from dirty dirt.

I’ve steeped it multiple times – meaning once letting it steep for five minutes, and this recent cup, for just under two minutes. There is flavor but it’s not a fave.

This will go into my Tea Swap rotations, or I might sell it in a lot to add more money to my tea budget – and necessary surgery fund.

Enchanted Forest from Voila! In Frederick
93

Great tea of the afternoon!

Please see other notes; this is a fave!

Swampwater from DAVIDsTEA
100

Backlog – drank this iced (but without the tea cubes this time) last night. It’s so fun and refreshing and I personally love the color. :) Please see other notes; this is a fave of mine.

Carrot Cake from DAVIDsTEA
95

Oh I love you, Carrot Cake Oolong! I purchased some from the Last Chance sale at David’s Tea and I’m so glad I did. This is one I will really miss. It’s sweet but not overly sweet. (Perhaps the carrot adds that sweetness.) It tastes like carrot cake, one of my fave vegetables. Cake can be a vegetable if there is one in it! ;) So delish. I’m glad I stocked up!

I’ve tried this iced and it’s OK, but I’m not prepared to sacrifice any of my stash for “OK.” I’ll keep it as a hot treat!

Blueberry Crumble from Della Terra Teas
90

I just love this fragrant, dessert cuppa!

Enjoying a cuppa while I’m catching up on my emails. I love my job and it’s awesome when I can be here AND not in pain, so I celebrated with a cup of this! It’s really a breakfast treat in liquid form! :)

Earl Grey Lavender from Adagio Teas
59

I’ve upped my rating slightly, since I’m more tolerant of bergamot and earl greys now. It’s still not my fave, but that lavender level of taste really evens out the earl grey.

Accidental Awesome from Adagio Teas

I previously enjoyed this and would have rated it high, but this latest batch tastes off. I don’t know if the formula changed or what, but the chocolate taste is very off-putting, and artificial. I don’t want to rate this one, I’m sure the fault lies with Adagio. Lately their dessert varieties leave me wanting more – and want me to rinse my mouth out! (To quote comedian Jim Gaffigan, “Gotta eat something else, get rid of that flavor.”) It’s a shame because this was always one of my faves – I even have the old tin Adagio used to use before the bags.

San Diego Sunshine from Keen Tea Thyme

No rating as this is one of my blends.

I added the green rooibos carrot tea from RoT to this and came up with a terrific iced tea variety – smooth and fun like sunshine, or sun tea. Delish!

Coconut Oolong from DAVIDsTEA
91

I’ve had this a sample in my stash so I decided to try it – as iced. I’ve had migraines all this week and I love a glass of iced tea when I’m feeling sick.

This is light and airy as a tea – perfect for an iced tea blend. I didn’t need any sugar (it’s rare that I add it nowadays anyway); the coconut is sweet enough. I was also able to reinfuse the leaves for a total of three times – stretching the tea dollar is always nice.

Since it’s a sample, I’m keeping the last part to try hot. Will report back soon! :)

Happiness is Hoppiness from Handmade Tea
94

Thanks to Azzrian for sending me this one. :)

First off, this is my inaugural Handmade Tea blend and now I’m hooked. :)

This is BEYOND happiness! This tastes like spring in a cuppa, or at least like the sweetest and juiciest apricot juice. It reminds me of California, and my childhood, so I’m instantly flooded with memories of my home state, and all the happiness of growing up in San Diego. (And then I think again, “I must move back!”)

There are candied (?) or at least dried apricots in the blend – I am munching on one, whoops – which I think contribute to the juicy flavor. I can smell a peppery spice, “punch to the palate” indeed.

Just lovely!

Vanilla Orchid from DAVIDsTEA
95

I’m back in the land of tea and ready to go! I had to cut back for health reasons (doing an experiment) but it turns out that I was right Mr. Doctor and tea has nothing to do with my migraines. So there.

For my first cuppa back on the job, I grabbed one of this. It’s a nice, crisp, clean oolong with a kick of vanilla. I always think I use too much, even though it’s just one tsp, because the tight balls unfurl into long fingers of tea leaves.

This is just delicious! My husband loves it too (I’m working on him)…but prefers it iced.

Lauren - Lost Girl Tea Series from Custom-Adagio Teas

No rating as this is one of my own blends.

I was trying to create a soothing tea of cinnamon, vanilla, and lemon. This is the result. I really enjoy this one – it makes me nice and mellow! I’ve added some lemon extract to it, and that’s a nice flavor to blend with this too.

Sweet Ginger Heat from DAVIDsTEA
52

This has a lot of my fave flaves in it: licorice, pink peppercorns, ginger, orange peel and of course green tea. I grabbed it on a whim – to pad my recent DT order so I could reach the $50 for free shipping.

The dry leaves do not smell at all like I would expect. It’s like a cleaning product or something. Uh-oh. As it’s brewing, I smell the same cleaning product smell – yikes! I’m all for cleaning products, don’t get me wrong. I love when my bathroom and kitchens are clean, and that wonderful fresh smell. But in me tea? No thanky.

I gritted my teeth and tried it anyway. It’s not as bad as it smells – but it’s heavy on the sweet ginger taste (ginger + stevia). Not as spicy as I had hoped. There’s also an earthy, as in dirt aftertaste. Ick!

Maybe it would be better iced, with lemon ice cubes or something to combat the ginger overkill?

I’m adding this to my rotation for tea swaps, or maybe I’ll try to sell it in a lot of other David’s Teas.

Me no likey – to quote a character on HIMYM. PASS!

Saigon Chai from DAVIDsTEA
85

This is one I’ve been wanting to try, so I grabbed it on my recent order.

It’s a decent chai, although not my favorite. It does remind me of fall, as most good chais do. And it’s very cinnamon-y, which is a nice enhancement to chai. I love the pink peppercorns – a fave of mine. There’s just something missing with it that makes it not as promising as others. I can’t put my finger on what though.

Maybe I’m just being a chai snob. I’ll keep at it, maybe this one will get better. I’m not saying it’s terrible – it’s still a great wake-up tea!

Lil Leapin' Lordy Lou from Keen Tea Thyme

Need a cup of this to get me moving today. Still have a migraine, but it’s manageable – I’m physically at work. Shocking!

Comforting from Aveda
91

One of my fave go-to relaxing teas. I’ve had the bagged version multiple times, but just decided to treat myself to the loose tea variety. I’m in heaven! I always let this steep for the length of the cup, which brings out that licorice sweetness. I did the same thing with the loose leaf variety, which leads to a much stronger and spicier cuppa.

My only issue with the bagged variety is how expensive it is – $17 for a box! But it’s extra indulgent and helps headaches/migraines. Hey, I should be able to write this off as a health expense or at least get HSA reimbursement! ;)

If anyone ever wants to order this, we could split the order to save on shipping. This is one I’ve got to have on hand for the daily migraines, and when I need a little bit of spa. :)

Mint Spice Green Tea from New Mexico Tea Company
94

I am lovin’ this one! I’ve worked the bag down several cups and brought it to work today to enjoy. It’s not what I would call a morning cuppa, but it’s just a nice tea to enjoy when you’re not sure what tea to start your day with. :)

Swiss Mountain from Della Terra Teas
94

My tummy is being very rude today so I’m opting for teas with mint. This is one I’ve tried before, though apparently haven’t logged?

Anyhoo, it’s crisp and refreshing with a twist of chocolate. A nice treat – and nice on my tummy. I’ll write a better note next time!

Turmeric Snap from DAVIDsTEA
92

This is so nice to drink when I have a headache/migraine. I don’t know if it cures me or just makes me not care, but it’s good stuff.

Please see other notes – this isn’t my first migraine rodeo. :(

Mint Spice Green Tea from New Mexico Tea Company
94

I’m surprised I’m the first to review this one!

This is a true gem for minty and spicy tea fans – as I am. I purchased this recently while obtaining the Sleepy Bear tea (which has a koala on it, so I had to get it). I wanted to round out my order so I got a few teas to sample but put my faith in my love of mint and spice (and green tea) for this one. I wasn’t disappointed!

This has a light taste – thanks to the green tea – but the mint and spice combo is out-of-this-world! It’s unique but refreshing. I taste anise and cinnamon, two of my fave spices. The blend of peppermint is sweetened with spearmint, which is light but there.

This is a great after dinner tea, and I’m sure it’s amazing iced! Will try that out soon as spring/summer are approaching (YAY – finally)! :)

Chocolate Mint from Harney & Sons
86

I purchased a tin of this in sachet-form from The Red Bird Tea Shoppe in Brockport, NY, while on vacay. (Review of the tea house to follow soon.) My grandmother and I enjoyed a cuppa or two.

This is a great marriage of flavors: chocolate and mint. (Aptly named, then.) Not much more to say about it, although I did leave the bag in the cup for the length of the cuppa, and the flavor stayed throughout. I couldn’t reinfuse but that wasn’t expected with a tea sachet, after all.

I love lifting off the tin top and breathing in the rich aroma of the bags, though. Delish!

Profile

Bio

Hello fellow tea fans!
I’ve been a tea enthusiast for years but just recently started brewing my own. I’ve created some blends, and enjoy researching about new teas. I combined my love of tea and writing to create a tea-devoted blog, Keen Tea Thyme. I have been writing for most of my life and am a former journalist with a degree in Communications and Social Psychology, and a minor in Writing. Journalism is in my blood, so that means I’m inquisitive by nature, will double-check sources and/or get a second opinion as needed, but also fair and balanced in my reviews. If my reviews seem more positive, energetic and have high ratings, it’s because I love tea. :)

If you are a tea company, I’d love to review some your tea! Free samples are always welcome so I can fully enjoy the freshest selections. I’m also open to tea swaps as I always have too many teas on hand to drink & would love to share with other tea enthusiasts! :)

My Simple Rating Scale (as of Feb. 2011)
>50: I’m NOT a fan. I could barely finish the cup, if I even did. I wouldn’t even recommend this to my worst enemy. Not worth my time nor yours.

51-65: Good aroma, good flavor. Just nothing pops to give the tea that special kick. Recommended to try; our tasting palates differ.

66-79: Yes, finally, tea – unique flavor profiles, great aroma & flavor. Recommended to try; our tasting palates differ.

80-99: These are cupboard essentials – delicious, aromatic and perfect everyday teas. Re-steepable (beyond at least one steeping). Highly recommended, fun for all ages.

100: These are my favorites, the ones I would take with me if stranded on a desert island. Beyond Highly Recommended.
