Well, this is the last of the three new straight teas for me to try! I was excited to see this one in the line up for this collection, but somewhat cautious just because Moonlight Whites are something I enjoy a lot and I feel like I’m pretty conditioned to a higher standard for them because the ones I’ve tried and currently stock are really good quality overall. I find DAVIDsTEA’s straight teas are usually alright, but struggle to compete against many other popular vendors of straight teas here on Steepster.
My coworkers are all FASCINATED by the tea though, and the process of making it. I need to bring in some other ones for them to all try – maybe we’ll do a nice side by side tasting of ours and other company’s and see what they think.
Personally – I didn’t dislike OR like this one. I mean, it was smooth and I thought displayed a lot of the general flavours I’m accustomed to with Moonlight teas: more body/deeper flavour, sweetness, perhaps a hint of a ‘cream’ like note, and some slight fruit notes in the undertones. The liquor is also visually quite dark; very brown and almost toasty looking. Despite decent flavour notes, it had an overall flatness to it that I couldn’t overlook though. I’m 90% sure that just circles back to my being used to higher quality Moonlight teas right off the bat. I’d be willing to overlook the quality difference if the price was more reasonable, but at nearly $25/50g that’s a steep price.
I will try this at least once more Gong Fu because I think it’s important to see whether it works well prepared traditionally – and that is how I prefer to drink my Moonlight teas anyway, so I feel like I can’t truly compare this to others without trying it that way too. However for the moment my impression is that this could be a nice tea to nab for a free 50g Frequent Steeper redemption but perhaps one to skip otherwise if whites tea or pu’erh teas aren’t typically your jam.
Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.
