Chocolate Cherry Latte Oolong

I’m really starting to enjoy and appreciate the roasty aroma of oolongs. I took a nice, deep inhale while this was steeping and can smell the cherry here alongside the oolong. Sipping now, and I am so happy with the flavor. It’s deep and dark, chocolaty too, but the cherry is front and center. As it cools, I’m also getting some coffee notes reminiscent of a coffee-flavored Werther’s candy. Surprisingly, this is one of the better teas I’ve had in a while. I expected it to be weak with age, but it’s incredibly flavorful and complex. I’m very tempted to try a second steep, but I’m worried it may not live up to the first cup and I don’t want to ruin my memory of it.

I feel like I’m getting more cherry in this cup. I also gets hints of chocolate that remind me of scratch and sniff sticker chocolate. I dumped the rest of this sample in my steeper, so I probably overleafed it a touch, but I think it works out well. I don’t quite get what the latte part of the name is about, unless it is a suggestion to add creamer which I will try before this cup is done. Oh wow, adding creamer does make this tea pop! I never would have thought to add cream to an oolong for some reason. The cherry seems more pronounced, taking over the sip while the chocolate comes in on the finish. I’m liking this cup, but it’s not quite enough to reel me in for a reorder although I would try the flavors again if it were on a black base.

I’m not a big fan of the individual base teas, chocolate cherry combos, or coffee in general, but even I can get behind this one a little. The Quilan oolong and hojicha both provide the ideal roasty, earth-chocolate blend on which to build those lovely chocolate cherry coffee flavours.

My favourite aspect hands down is the aroma: dry leaf, wet leaf, and liquid. It has the best cherry smell ever, mixed in with some succulent chicory chocolate.

It also went well with or without milk. Now I just have to see if it resteeps well, and that will be a wrap!

Had more of this. Definitely not a favourite – I’m pretty picky about the cherry flavouring in my tea, and combined with the coffee, it just doesn’t quite work for me.

Plain, it was rich and comforting. A touch bitter when hot, due to the coffee I think. Half a tsp of sugar helped. The chocolate and creamy coffee notes were more present in the second steep. I didn’t get much oolong flavour, but then, I don’t think that was the point here :)

I finally made my A Quarter to Tea order after having had this tea (and Spumoni) on my watch list for a while.

When I opened up the bag I was greeted with a very strong cherry cordial scent. For me, this was awesome. I love cherry cordials. A lot. Like, I can’t buy them for myself because I will eat the entire sleeve of them in entirely too quick of a fashion. But yes, the scent of this is very strong. If you aren’t as enamored with cherries, this might be too strong for you.

I had to assume that the scent couldn’t transfer to the taste in the same degree of strength. And I was right… but not in a bad way. When brewed, the cherry chocolate flavors are there but mellowed out. A bit of the oolong flavor is allowed to shine through. Which, to be honest, I had almost forgotten about it being an oolong due to the smell being so prominent. But yes, the oolong flavor is there and right next to it is cherry and chocolate or cherry cordial, if you use your imagination.

The flavors all meld together pretty evenly actually. This is during the sip. Much to my pleasant surprise, the after taste is where the cherry chocolate flavors come back a bit stronger. I would find myself almost smacking my lips after and between sips because the left over flavor almost made it seem that I had, in fact, eaten a chocolate covered cherry. I let a cup of this go cold before I drank it and that was still a tasty treat.

Hot or cold, this is one of the few flavored blends that I have come across that even comes close to duplicating the flavor from the scent it gives off. Nicely done.

I must confess: when I first received this, my heart broke into itty-bitty pieces.

Oh no! Cherry! AAAAAH!

It isn’t as “coffee like” as I thought it was going to be which is good for me because I’m not a big fan of coffee. The chocolate is rich, not that “waxy”, cheap chocolate. The cherry is in the background but that’s ok. Delicious cuppa

I’m not sure why I got this tea. I’m one of those people who don’t particularly like the taste of fruits and chocolate mixed together. I do like dessert style blends, so that may be an explanation as to where my head was at when I decided to get this.

This tea was one of those instances where I think every flavor that the blender intended me to taste came out in the brew, which happens less often than I thought (probably due to my untrained palate). The cherry and chocolate are blended well together and make themselves known over the tea base without being overpowering. The chocolate is dark and subtle, barely sweet. The cherry is even more subtle, which keeps it from tasting fake…a nice touch.

The only thing that I found odd about this tea was the base itself. I’m not familiar with the different types of oolongs, and I have even less experience with the long twisty leaves as opposed to the rolled up type. The base tasted earthy, like wet soil.

I’m not sure if it’s the flavor, the base, or the entire blend together, but I get some coffee sort of flavor in the mix every now and then. (Okay, this note is added later, but I forgot that this tea has the word “latte” in it. Guess that would explain the coffee taste.)

While I enjoyed tasting this tea, it’s not my flavor personally.

I thought I was out of this but realised I had a little baggy at the bottom of my drawer. I got more cocoa and cherry using hotter water this time (90 deg. C) and it also made it more creamy.
