Best afternoon tea you ever had?

Where were you? What did you have? How long did you stay? What made it memorable?

Can’t wait to hear your stories!

is afternoon tea a brand or something? i dont understand the question.

Perhaps they are referring to the British afternoon tea service – with petit-fours, scones, tea sandwiches, clotted cream, etc.

Oh, no! Pretty much any tea party or tea break you ever took, not necessarily a formal one :)

I have never had an afternoon tea service in the British sense but have had many good teas in the afternoon. My favorite tea is still the 2008 Song of Chi Tse by Berylleb King Tea on EBay.

I’ve never had a British-style afternoon tea but mine was probably when I was living in Austin and I went to Zhi Tea. It was cold and rainy and I ended up relaxing in their tea shop with a pot of their Gong Fu Black.

My favourite afternoon tea was at Cup Tea Lounge in Glasgow, Scotland. I wrote a review about the experience on my profile. The food was all very good and I stayed for about 2 hours. The most memorable thing at this particular venue was that I could try all the teas that I wanted with my afternoon tea. I went with a friend and got a chance to try 6 teas (we both managed to finish 3 servings each) in total. They have good quality loose leaf as well so I can’t say I was disappointed with any of my selections.

Princess Cruise ships, SO MUCH FOOD and amazing service. The tea sucks though (liptons), so I bring my own.

Here is one of the sailings I did and I documented every afternoon tea I went to http://oolongowl.com/afternoon-tea-oolong-owls-hawaiian-cruise-part-2/

It all looks delicious. But if I were on that cruise I wouldn’t bother going to it. Being on a gluten free diet there are few tea houses that serve food that I can actually eat.

So much food and so much work preparing all that. Can you imagine if they put that much effort into the tea?

Ooo.. now I need to look at Princess. :)

Princess (and probably most cruise lines) is really good about gluten free/diabetic/vegetarian food/no salt/low sugar. Some of those cakes were the low sugar ones as they look just as good! Just have to tell them and they remember and will bring you something special. After a day or two they already have my hot water ready for me.

My most memorable as far as quality of tea, food, service and atmosphere was at Le Salon at the Windsor Court Hotel in New Orleans. I went to New Orleans with a couple of ladies I met on a travel matching site. They weren’t into tea so I walked down there one afternoon on my own from the Bourbon Street area and had tea all by myself. I spent a couple of hours enjoying the live string music and savoring each and every little bite. The tea itself was well prepared and endless although I only got one kind to try. The food was gorgeous and delicious. Even things I normally don’t like.

I see from the website now that they are saying who their teas come from. When I went that wasn’t a part of the menu. That’s a nice addition. I’d love to go back someday.

The Peacock Alley Tea Room at the Washington Intercontinental in DC was also one that I spent a couple of hours savoring by myself. The live harp music was delightful and the food was tasty and gorgeous. The tea was good enough that even though expensive I tried to buy more from them after I got home but lost email contact and never got it done. A close substitute is the jackfruit tea from Mahamosa. :)

Otherwise, for not fancy but good and endless pots of tea, Maudee’s in Dallas was just the best. Unfortunately they are no longer open as changes in rental contracts became untenable. The hostess was a joy to interact with, her food was excellent, though not fancy, and she made her tea well. And the company when I went was always good. :)

I try to find afternoon tea wherever I travel. :)

Going to a tea alone? You are my hero!

Took me many years but I finally figured out that there is no reason to deny myself things I might enjoy just because I can’t find anyone to go with me. I like sharing teas and other things with others of like mind, but It’s actually kind of pleasant to be alone with my thoughts, savoring at my own pace, not having to keep up a conversation or worry that someone else is bored or ready to leave. It’s a really freeing experience and I wish I’d been brave enough to try it sooner in life.

That sounds wonderful, I’ll have to try it out sometime. Have you run into any problems with tea rooms not wanting to accomidate one person?

Nicole said

Not at all. Everywhere has treated me no differently than they would a group. I’m sure like most restaurants, they’d rather have 2 people eligible to leave a tip for a table and 2 people to pay for a meal, but I’ve never gotten bad service that I thought was due to being solo. Some things, like if it is a special tea event, I’ve been seated with a group of strangers, but most people try to include everyone at their table in conversation at something like that and you meet new people that way!

19 years old loose ripe pu’er in Hong Kong park. I get the feeling I sipped over a litre of that tea over the space of around 2 to 3 hours.

This past friday I drove an hour from home to treat myself for my birthday (March 2nd.) at The British Tea Pantry in Tecumseh, Michigan. The only tea I had was a raspberry iced tea, but it was fairly good. I had a plate of assorted tea sandwiches and fruit, as well as a bowl of Apple slaw. OMG! Everything was terrific. I usually will have tea and scones for dessert, but this time I decided to have profiteroles with fudge topping and whipped cream. I ended up being unable to finish those so I got a box. I plan on trying to hit that place once a month from now on.
