36 Tasting Notes

Ginseng Oolong from DAVIDsTEA
68

My DAVIDsTEA friends told me about this one day (they were all ooh-ing about it for some reason, I forgot) when I walked into the store and I decided to buy a little sample of it to take home to try for myself.

It’s been sitting in the back of my cupboard for a month now and I’ve finally remembered to try it. (Was in the mood for oolong)

At first I couldn’t remember why they said I should try it, something about the taste..hmmm..
After the cup was brewed, I took a sip aaaaand nothing. It’s just a nice vegetal oolong.

Then seconds later after the first sip or two I didn’t realize but I inhaled through my nose and noticed this strange sweet after taste in the back of my throat. Like many on here said, it’s kind of artificial? I felt sick at first but it sort of grew on me. It’s a licorice-y (menthol?) kind of sweet. Very strange. I loved that the dry leaves looked like tiny green pebbles.

Don’t know if I’ll restock because it nearly made me upchuck but it’s neat.

Mint Chocolate Rooibos from DAVIDsTEA
64

Exploring my new found love for tea with mint in it, I knew I had to try this one! You can definitely taste the rooibos base but the mint and chocolate balances it out so it’s not so noticeable (if steeped for less time). I was more so surprised on re-steep to find the mintiness still there. The initial steep wasn’t as strong as I thought it would have been so I assumed it wouldn’t last.

I like it, maybe not to restock but it’s decent for caffeine-free evenings.

Vanilla Orchid from DAVIDsTEA
88

First brew was lovely. A nice vanilla touch to the oolong. On re-steep the vanilla faded and it was just a cup of oolong. It’s still yummy, and I actually think it’s probably one of my favourites from davidstea. (Milk oolong being right above this)

Cocomint Cream from DAVIDsTEA
83

So when I first heard of this tea, I was SO excited I had to tell my friend who is a huge coconut fan. COCONUT and MINT?! Weird combo but oh so interesting! When I got to smell the dry leaves at the store, I was actually disappointed. I’m not a mint fan and the mint smell was definitely there, somehow I was hoping it would be more coconutty. Anyways, that was probably 3 months ago when it first came out. On 12/12/12 (woohoo!) I went to a DAVIDsTEA with my friend who was celebrating her birthday and I treated her to a Red Velvet Cake latte (with a candle on top!). I also wanted to get myself a tea to go too. I thought out loud “Which tea would make a good soy latte?” The Tea Guide told me “Cocomint cream!” a little hesitant but also lazy to think of anything, I agreed to it.

IT WAS AMAZING.

So amazing that it convinced me to get myself a 100 gram tin the next time I dropped by a store.

I did brew it on it’s own as a straight tea and yes, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did when it was a latte but it’s not bad.
The latte had a bit of agave added to it.

Something about the combination of the milk with the mint made it so creamy. Initial taste was almost similar to sipping into a mint ice cream but with a really pleasant coconut cream aftertaste.

I dislike strong mint teas, but this has sort of opened up some new doors for me.

Cocomint cream? High five to you, cocomint cream. YOU GO COCOMINT CREAM! (and a hi5 to you if you get my lame reference :P)

Genmai Hojicha (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
95

I used to be a green tea on the daily type of girl until I discovered DAVIDsTEA. Genmaicha and Sencha were my go tos! So after all these fun flavored teas for the past few months, I decided to bring some of this home. Boy, am I ever in love. It’s roasty toasty and is everything I enjoyed about Gemaicha with more!

If you like Genmaicha, I recommend this version as well :) I can see this being part of my daily greens when I am in need of a get away from flavoured tea.

Cold 911 from DAVIDsTEA
81

I’m still drowsy from meds but here goes:

For the past week I’ve been drinking cup after cup of this because of a stubborn developing cold that is taking forever to get worse. It seems like my immune system is fighting a good fight (darn you sudden cold Vancouver weather!) and I’m at that stage where it feels like I’m beginning to get really sick or I’ve just gotten better from being sick. UGH! I’m not a mint tea fan and this is the only tea I actually enjoy and want more of that has peppermint/mint.
….uhm and..
Yay for cold 911! You will be my go to when I’m sick.

Orange Blossom from DAVIDsTEA
70

This reminds me of bubble gum which isn’t a bad thing but the last rooibos I had (rooibos de provence) had a similar tone. Still good! This one sold me by dry leaf scent and I’ll continue to drink the rest of my stash. Maybe I’ll try adding a bit of milk or something to this.

The Glow from DAVIDsTEA
73

Every time I walk into/by/near a DAVIDsTEA it has a distinct smell and I feel this is exactly what it smells like (when brewed and tasted). I’ve been exploring all their herbals lately and The Glow has always been on my to try list. I brewed it for 4 mins and it turned out a nice mild, not overly powerful blend. Not looking at what’s in it but what I can pick out right away is cinnamon but it’s also blended very well with something floral.. that I cannot seem to pin point (also maybe because I am a tea newbie :P). Not a bad tea. I wonder if the health benefits are true because the cold air has been taking a toll on my already dry skin! :(

Jessie's Tea from DAVIDsTEA
85

Lavender, Coconut and slightly minty is what I taste with this one. Again I’m on some weird ICED HERBAL tea rampage so this one was also iced with a tiny squeeze of agave.

I actually like it and may even add this to my cupboard!

edit: I added a tin to my cupboard, too good to pass!

Bear Trap from DAVIDsTEA
68

I enjoyed this as an iced tea with a bit of agave, wasn’t sure if it even needed that. I’m not sure what it is but there’s an interesting after-note/taste to it. Not a bad one though!

Pink Flamingo from DAVIDsTEA
85

Dried leaf smell was amazing so I just had to try this. I had it iced and it was oversteeped but I feel that brought out more of the grapefruit-y ness to it. It’s quite refreshing and apparently good with vodka :P

Kiwi's Big Adventure from DAVIDsTEA
80

Within first sip, I could sense melon, peach, apple, and kiwi! There’s a distinct kiwi after-taste that I do not mind at all! Lovely blend for a green tea. I am usually really picky about fruit blends and green tea cause I find that they’re always bland or just not right. I can already tell it’ll be great iced for a hot day.

Strawberry Rhubarb Parfait from DAVIDsTEA
94

I’ve never thought I’d love an herbal tea as much as I have fallen in love with this one. I had it iced with a bit of agave and it’s divine. Taste just like candy and I can have it before bed WOO HOO!

Reminds me of ice cream or like those round creamy strawberry candies.

I’m recommending this to everyone that has not yet ventured into herbals.

Vanilla Orchid from DAVIDsTEA
88
Superberry (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
61

Decent berry tea. Not much to say about it for now. Reminds me of blueberry jam (I like blueberry jam more) but more packed with other BERRY like scents.

Buddha's Blend from DAVIDsTEA
77

Dry leaf smelled awesome. When steeped it’s not bad, I may have accidentally over steeped so it was slightly bitter. Overall a nice floral and fruity tea.

Cookie Dough from DAVIDsTEA
93

Probably the first dessert tea I’ve enjoyed! I initially wanted to try Vanilla Orchid but once I smelt this one I had to take it home! I tried it as a take out today and I asked for a little bit of agave and it was just perfect. It really does smell like cookie dough! Taste wise, it reminds me of chocolate chip cookies, which is very awesome. YUM.

I’ll likely add this onto my shelf. :D

Blueberry Jam (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
92

To celebrate the first of November, I decided I felt like having blueberry tea (why? I don’t know). The last time I had this was in the summer, as an iced tea which was SUPER yoms but today it was great as a warm tea. I had it straight with no agave and it had a nice distinct blueberry flavour and was slightly sweet. I’m glad this is on DAVIDsTEA’s permanent shelf because I’ll probably want to repurchase again :)

Jumpy Monkey from DAVIDsTEA
69

Jumpy Monkey turned me into a Jumpy Julie.

I believe this is the first Yerba Maté I’ve ever tried/had and the first tea I’ve had with coffee beans in it. It came in the little set of tiny tins that I bought, otherwise I may have not bothered with it. I decided to try it this afternoon because I felt like I needed that extra punch. I don’t drink coffee for a reason and that’s because I’m way too sensitive to it. Bad idea? Maybe. I was trying to focus on calculating a few numbers and it was totally jitterville.

Taste wise, it wasn’t bad. Kind of smooth, sweet, and woodsy/toasty/smokey? I was surprised that I did not hate it. Maybe I’ll turn it into a latte next time to try it out.

Cinnamon Heart from DAVIDsTEA
53

A part of my tiny tins collection.

With a name like this, I expected it to be cinnamony and it is by dry leaf scent but once steeped is where it failed. It had a light scent of cinnamon to it but not as strong as I wanted it to be (like cinnamon hearts!!!). I was okay with the pu-erh scent. It wasn’t as put off as it could have been.

Tie Kwan Yin (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
84

Got this for a 2/$5 deal in those sample bags kits they had on for clearance.

I’m not an Oolong tea drinker but for the first time trying, this one is nice. Not sure what Oolong should taste like and it’s nothing distinct yet I’ve had myself reaching for this tea and had about 3 cups of this in the past week. I guess it’s good in my books!

Red Velvet Cake from DAVIDsTEA
87

I am pleasantly surprised at how well this one turned out! This one is similar to birthday cake. I liked birthday cake as a tea but I’m not a huge fan of it’s rooibos base.

When tasted straight, it’s not too strong and not bland either, you can really smell the cakey-ness to it. I guess you could say it smells like red velvet. I’m just a sucker for cake scented stuff so this one is good in my books!

Throw in some milk/sweetener and I got myself a yummy cake fix without the extra calories ;)

The Earl's Garden from DAVIDsTEA
76

I love Earl Grey tea. So when I sniffed this tea at the store, I had to bring some home to try! It’s a nice light earl grey with a berry kick to it. I just used my last and I’ll probably restock but it’s not a rush, there’s just so many out there to try. This is nice though, it makes a great London Fog. :)

Japanese Sencha (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
63

Smells nice. Tastes okay.

Not much to say about it. Maybe on the second brew?

Profile

Bio

A tea newbie that typically enjoys plain teas (sencha/genmaicha green tea is a daily must have) and the occasional chai and london fogs but is willing to discover new flavors.

All thanks to DAVIDsTEA, I’ve rediscovered how fun tea consumption can be! So now I’m using Steepster as my own personal tea diary.

I usually try flavored teas straight first and then in a soy/almond latte with a tiny bit of sweetener (agave or honey). If it’s a fruit type tea, then after the initial straight taste test, I’d do it iced with a bit of sweetener.

My Aerolatte is my favorite tea tool. It’s cow printed too!
