I purchased this cake because of the price, shape and name. Obviously this was named in honor of Panchen Lama Norbu not Nyima, otherwise, the PRC would never let it see the light of day on western shores. I digress and don’t want to cause any political arguments here.

Anyway, I can’t say how pleasantly surprised I was with the quality of this Puer. I wrestled with the mushroom shape trying to break a modest piece off. I got a little bit bigger piece than I wanted, but gave it a go.

Because I had more cake than necessary, it was important to keep the steeps as short as possible. This worked wonderfully. Over many, many, many steeps, I was rewarded with a rich, full-bodied tea. This tea produced an impressive depth of flavor; typical puer flavors of earth, leather and finally pleasant salted mushrooms. Nothing spectacular as far as flavor or aroma, just solid, hearty and healthy flavors. As stated earlier, I kept the steeps very short, therefore I never encountered a harsh or bitter note.

Overall, this puer exemplifies only positive qualities: price point, flavor, aroma, and endurance.

This came about as a result from my swap with Tommy the Toad who has the funniest name on Steepster. :)

I’ve never had a Mushroom shaped pu-erh before but I guess the shape of the tea does not impact the flavor much? Does anyone know? I steeped this one in the gaiwan for 60 seconds after a quick rinse in boiling water.

It’s very earthy and a woodsy tea. I thought I noticed some creamy elements and a bit of fruitness here as well. I wasn’t sure how much of the sample to use in the gaiwan. After the first steep, the second one only needed about 10 seconds before it got really dark. This tea has staying power! I don’t know if I can drink anymore of it tonight without staying up all night.

With the second steep it seems very woodsy and with hints of tobacco, it’s a bit smoky. Thanks Tommy! I will have to drink the rest of this in the morning when I have all day to stay awake. :) I might have to buy one, it’s a very good pu-erh for the price.

Update: This has become one of my regular go-to teas. A wonderful rich flavor in every way. If you like ripe cooked Pu-erhs, this is a great one to have in your tea collection. I’m rasing my rating on this one.

Notes:
I’d almost give this 5 stars. For the price (under $10 @250g) it’s basically a quintessential Pu-erh as far as flavor notes go, only very affordable. 85% of the tea I drink are Pu-erhs, and I could probably drink this daily (I actually have been lately). It’s delicious, and better than many expensive Pu-erhs I’ve tried. This tea leaves you with a great ‘Pu-erh High’, a nice clean energy level—perfect after walking and sitting meditation.
•4 to 5 steeps.

My Ratings…
★ = Didn’t Hate It.
★★ = Not Bad.
★★★ = Me Likey.
★★★★ = Impressive!
★★★★★ = AwesomeSauce!

… still one of my go-to teas. ♥ it.

I bought this one because of the shape i wasnt even going to drink it but i did and it is wonderfull. I will buy 2 next time very affordable and very good :)

I really like this tea I’ve been drinking it for about a year now, I bought many of them and just got a new one in October and I’m really glad I did because now the only place I can find it is at Lostdogcoffee.com for $30 when I have always gotten it at Puerhshop.com for just $9.92, I think lost dog bought up all that puerhsop had and jacked the price up to 30$ for no reason because I see other teas on lost dog from puerhshop at jacked up prices and even they use puershop’s very same photos, that really sucks big balls to me :( Anyways I guess this will be the end of Panchen for me when this one is gone cuz I sure aint paying $30 for it now. Its WAS a really good puerh at a really good price and it taste nice too.
I see this one listed on steepster twice for some reason
