From Silk Road Teas

Beautiful small leaves brew to a sweet and grassy flavor. A good everyday green tea produced on an island in Zhejiang Province. The farm has been organic for 6 years and the quality of this tea reflects this effort. Steep for 1 – 2 minutes at water temperature of 175 – 185 degrees.

Yesterday I found myself in the neighborhood of Rainbow Grocery, which is a huge worker owned co-op grocery store. It’s an all vegetarian place and one of the things they are noted for is their large bulk food selection. I have not been there in years. I was happy to find they have quite a large selection of tea in bulk from Silk Road and some other companies. I’ve always wanted to try this one but didn’t want to fork over the price for 1/4 lb. that Silk Road has it for on their website.

Anyway on to the tea…

This was prepared in a glass teapot and I steeped it for 175F at 3 minutes. Based on my experience with Chinese greens I felt it was a safe assumption.

The tea liquor is a medium yellow in color. The first thing I notice about it is how very vegetal it is. The flavor reminds me a bit of artichokes and cooked peas. After sipping it has a nice sweet aftertaste without a lot of astringency. I am not terribly thrilled by it, but it would make a good everyday tea and I will certainly finish off what I have.

Now I need to stop posting tasting notes and do something productive for a while! :-P

Oh wow! I would be so excited to go to a grocery like that! Is that pitiful? LOL! I have to drive over an hour to get neat grocery stores, and we still don’t have one that sells bulk tea, not even Whole Foods up there!

TeaBrat

Yeah, that is one benefit to living in San Francisco, you can find pretty much everything here, all kinds of neat stores I can walk to or take the bus. :)

Roughage

Umm, posting tasting notes is productive, isn’t it? ;)

TeaBrat

Yeah, tell that to this giant pile of laundry I’m ignoring!

A strong vegetal taste. The flavor lingered but not in an unpleasant way. I enjoyed this tea a lot more than I imagined I would.

I was surprised how much I liked this tea. It wasn’t super astringent for a Chinese green.

Really enjoy the name of this tea in my Steepster Select samples. “Organic Buddhist Tea” has a great ring to it and after opening I was happy to find a very nice bouquet and a little tea dust like matcha. My first steep was a bit too much water and had a savory and vegetal flavor, good color and a slight astringent after taste. A very nice every day tea.

Pretty good every day green tea. I also have a Fo Mei (Buddha’s Eyebrow). I love the tiny tiny rolled green leaves and they smell spinachy, minerally.
The liquor is light and cleansing, great with my lunches. Very subtle notes of butter and larger notes of butter bean. A bit of green bean flavor as well.

Had a bit of this Gaiwan style at 175F today,,,I definitely have other green teas that I like better but this is a good one to play around with and try different temps bc it’s not like precious Long Jing that I don’t want to run out ever lol.

An excellent every day tea. It’s very light, and natural tasting, with a good strong green tea flavor.

I can’t say much and be different from Silk Road Tea’s own description of this tea. It seems quite delicate, yet strong enough to warrant being an every day tea. Sweet and traditionally grassy but it doesn’t overload you. Quite satisfying and very good for the mind when steeping and thinking of the buddhist connection.
