From Bitterleaf Teas

After our original sheng and then shou, Plum Beauty expansion has now moved into black tea territory.

This tea is made from the same “silver” grade old tree material as our original 2017 Plum Beauty sheng and makes for an excellent black tea that is both rich and fragrant.

Unlike most black teas, this one is processed uniquely, undergoing a single roasting that leaves a little bit of room on the top for further oxidization. Our experience drinking this exact tea from previous years is that it can be expected to smooth and fill out over time, making it a suitable candidate for storage of up to 2 years.

As it is right now, this tea has some crisp fruity notes and a unique fragrance, but you can expect it to develop over time. In order to get the most out of it, we recommend reducing your water temperature slightly to 80-85c.

Picking period: Pre-April 8

I got vaccinated on Saturday! I ended up feeling absolutely terrible all day yesterday, but luckily the side effects seem to have passed. Sadly I didn’t drink much tea over the last couple days, but had another cup of this in the morning. Still syrupy sweet, like overripe stone fruits.

Gongfu!

Close to a sipdown now. A bit of a lighter and more medium bodied tea, with much more of a fruity and floral leaning profile. It kind of has the sweeter and slightly more syrupy fruity notes of red dates and some sort of brandied stonefruit with a more orchid-like deeper and more perfumed floral undertone. It’s more of a burnt sugar backend, with notes of molasses/brown sugar and raisins folded in. I’d like for it to be a bit more punchy, but to be fair, I also could have leafed the tea session more intensely for this size of teapot, too. It’s very pleasant, regardless. I really like the complimentary contrast of the sweet browns and thicker fruit notes.

I had this yesterday in the cute lil’ cat gaiwan that Bitterleaf has and I cried. but the crying was probably just that I had been wanting some dianhong (or all of the dianhongs) but have mostly been sticking to getting rid of all this green (+also some oolongs) tea that I’ve been hoarding like some kind of monster. THIS is a beautiful dianhong tho, rich…fruitiness? that’s what I remember, which isn’t helpful…and I wrote on the back ‘drink in one year’ so….I guess I’m saving the rest? okay future self.
