All you have to do is steep a cup and before you know it, people are asking “what is that wonderful smell?”, “did someone just bake a cake?” and of course, “can I have some?” This comforting black tea blend is no exception. With the warm aromas of cinnamon, cloves and vanilla, it smells and tastes like a spice cake fresh out of the oven. But consider yourself warned: you might want a little bit extra to share around…

You know that wonderful feeling you get when you’ve finally struck pay-dirt and figured out the perfect brewing parameters for a given tea? And then you try it again and follow the same steps and it actually tastes the same? Perfect feeling. I’ve figured out that for this tea, I need one of David’s teaspoons, as well as one of Teavana’s teaspoons, some cream and rock sugar, and my timolino. It is warming, with lots of ginger and cloves, and the cream thickens it up nicely and really gives the whole thing a very bready feel. I’m definitely going to have to stock up on this next time I’m at David’s.

And somehow I placed an order with the tea merchant (for French earl grey and biodynamic Darjeeling) and barely realized I was doing it! Next thing I knew, there was a confirmation email in my inbox and I was like “huh? how’d this get here?” I think I was feeling a bit idle and listless at work, and well..I suppose we all know what happens when I’m like that now right?
Ok, work day over in a few hours, then achingly long seminar, and then finally, thankfully, I get to go home. I’ve been dreading the length of this day since last week!

justJames: I actually tried art of tea’s biodynamic darj and loved it to an unbelievable extent, and so I figured I’d try another darj for comparison’s sake. Mmmm. I think I’m getting like 2 oz of the tea merchant darj, so let me know if you want any.

A break from sipdowns this morning.. It’s cold, so I wanted something cozy. What I really wanted was a stove top chai with milk, but we are out of milk so I will wait til later for that. I’m actually thinking of trying soy milk for chais and lattes, since milk has been upsetting my stomach more and more it seems (probably becoming lactose intolerant sigh). Any thoughts on whether I should get regular or vanilla soy milk for chai? Or rice milk?

Anyways, this tea was good, I added some brown sugar and i think i like it better without, it seems more ginger. I’d like to try this one with milk too! See previous notes :)

Oh, and i did a slight stash reduction last night.. I threw out *gasp*some bagged teas I’ve had for over 2 years that I quite drinking entirely and honestly wouldn’t drink again probably. A few were not good and one was a decent rooibos, but I have too many other rooiboses. I felt bad throwing them out, but in all honesty, they were probably stale like crazy, as the bags had all been opened. And I I didn’t want to feed people bad tea at work if I took it lol. So it’s gone now, and I’ll get over it haha. confession over

I say go with unsweetened soy milk, and then you can add whatever sweetener you like. I made chai over the stovetop a week or so ago with unsweetened soy milk and a teaspoon of brown sugar and it was awesome!

Oh, and I’ve totally thought about tossing tea too. Fortunately my coworker takes anything! :)

Thanks for the suggestion Tealizzy, I usually add honey to my chai anyways so unsweetened will probably work!

And I will get over my tea guilt haha life is too short for bad tea, especially when I have so many better ones to drink :)

My milk of choice is unsweetened almond. It goes well with chai and oatmeal.

I go for coconut almond milk. It tastes better than soy, plain coconut, or plain almond to me.

I went and bought some unsweetened soy milk and tried some just plain first and got an itchy mouth and scratchy throat :( so potentially a mild allergy? I researched and it probably is oral allergy syndrome.. As tofu is fine for me. I made a chai with it anyways and had some, it tasted good but the scratchy throat was not fun.

So I will either try almond milk or coconut for sure next, although almond might not be much better, I’m also easing my way into trying nuts like almonds, severe peanut allergy has made me scared to try them all these years lol. But happy to hear the suggestions, especially since soy milk was not the best, thanks! :)

you can always tear the bags apart and turn the tea into the soil of your garden…. acts like in-house compost for your plants! =0)

I just had to try some of this. The words “spice cake” were being bandied about, and I love spice cake.
Very clove-y, and I’m getting some phantom ginger taste.
I can see why so many people think this should have been part of the winter collection, not the autumn.
I like it, though I’m getting more spice than sugar, and I think it could have done well with a touch more sugary sweetness to it.
A cozy sweater tea. I think this will come into its own in the winter time.

Over the last couple of days, I started drinking my flavored black teas without added sweetener, and I think I started to get used to not having it. I mean, there’s a sweetness to these teas anyway, considering they are flavored. I’ve just always had a sweet tooth, and milk and sugar have always been staples when I drink black tea. I think I’m going to continue this trend, but today, I’m taking a departure, because this tea tastes so delicious with some added brown sugar! ;)

Now that this cup is over, I want to drink something else before we head out to see I, Frankenstein, but my little kitty just got comfortable on my lap. So hard to disturb him! :)

And here goes the 5th tea!

I steeped this for the full 7 mintues because it’s almost midnight and I’m hoping to do more cleaning etc but I’m just really sick of scrubbing the walls and what if the landlord doesn’t really care that the place is this clean and I’m wasting my time? But I need this tea to get me off of this chair and doing… something.

I love the smell of it!

Ok, so it does sorta remind me of Glitter and Gold, BUT, right at the end of the sip there’s the wonderful gingerbread burnt sugar note that just lingers on and on. It’s delicious. Do not be afraid to steep it for 7 minutes!

If I were rating any of these new teas, I’d probably stick this in the high 80’s based on how happy I am with it right now. It’d be wonderful as a latte too!

And, after drinking all 5 new seasonal teas I have to say that getting 30g minimum of each was the right choice. I enjoyed all of them but I think Sugar and Spice, Pumpkin Chai and the Cocoberry were the ones I’d want to re-stock, while I will have to think more about the Pistachio Cream and Mom’s Apple Pie. No regrets on a day dedicated to DAVIDsTEA

I sometimes get frustrated when doing move-out cleaning for the same reason. I’m always super thorough but wonder if it would be all for nothing. That said, I hope you’re not staying up too too late fussing, because chances are the landlord won’t be as meticulous as you.

Yeah, no worries. I’ll probably head to bed in the next half an hour or so. Mostly I’m just dismantling furniture at the moment. The bf is worried we won’t have enough space and he says to just dump it and we’ll re-buy it in TO, but… but… if it’ll fit why not try? :P

Tomorrow I will worry more about washing the floors/walls or whatever and drink tons of mate!

Also, this tea sounds right up my alley. I was a little disappointed with the way the rest of them sounded (especially because I wish there were more blacks), but this tea has me excited. Plus I tend to like all my tea fairly strong, so I’m totally down with steeping it for like a year.

Well Sugar & Spice, I loved you once but I think I might have outgrown you. Sipping now, the flavor is not nearly as spicy and delicious as I remember it being in the past. Perhaps this would be more successful with a longer steep because now it is very watered down. I just want more from you, tea.

Sipdown. I have no idea how many teas I have left in my physical cupboard. Maybe I should update that this evening.

As I wait for this tea to steep, I’m sipping on a lovely second steep of the Keemun I had this morning. So good. I need to investigate more keemun teas, because they really work for me.

I massively overleafed this because there wasn’t enough left for another “real” cup. Just a tsp or so. Thankfully that doesn’t seem to have hurt this tea at all – in fact, it may have helped. With a generous addition of milk, this is actually a really nice, comforting mug of clove-and-spice tea. I’m surprised I like this one so much, but I do. If it came back, I’d get another 24g, but I’m not too upset it’s not available. There are plenty of other teas to try!

This is one of the first teas I REALLY liked when I started trying loose leaf back in August. I might have gone a bit nuts when I realized it might be coming back because when I initially bought it, I purchased 50 g, then I got 100 g in the collector’s tin, and then I may have bought another 250 g. If you ever get a huge craving for it, I am sure I will have some to spare. Although, I do really love this tea.

Those whole cloves! Why isn’t this part of the upcoming winter collection instead? Combined with half-and-half, it’s like a one-toned clove-heavy chai. The clove is so strong that after enough sips, I swear it’s numbing my tongue. Very much like those clove ribbon candies you can buy around Christmas.

As much as I like cloves, this is a little too simplistic. As this cools, I am reminded of the way clove tastes combined with pickled beets. My grandma is a little heavy-handed on the cloves whenever she pickles them, and it’s SO much like that. Love the cloved up pickled beets, but a cooled off tea reminiscent of that is obviously a little weird.

I’m watching the Social Network for the first time, and it’s going on in the background as I write this. A little boring, but at least I can say I “watched” it now.

Thanks sundaysipping for being awesome to send some of this my way, so I could have another go of it. :)

I will say it’s better than the first time around, not that that went badly, but I steeped it longer this time and it does seem more flavourful. Despite rarely adding anything to my teas, it seems like a wee bit of sugar would help the flavour pop more.

I’m a little sad that I seem to be a bit over David’s, because it’s a Canadian company, and the employees at my local store are amazing. My tea tastes are evolving though, and you’ve just gotta go with the flow. I do keep David’s Guayusa and Genmiacha stocked in my cupboard at least .

I know there is no ginger in this but it reminds me of a gingerbread cookie that’s heavy on the cloves. I of course over-steeped this because I was busy packing, but I liked how the cloves turned out- maybe I would like just a little more apple
