Doesn’t look like I rated this previously, although I know I tried it. Unfortunately, it came off as just a black tea to me. Nothing special at all. And since I’m not a huge fan of keemun, it was even less interesting to me (though I drank it – it probably is a decent cup for those who enjoy this sort of profile). Thanks to… Sil? VariaTea? Cavocorax? Whoever gave me the remainder of their sample :)

I bought some of this in Ost’s sale. (Thank you Ost!) It’s one of those teas I’ve always wanted to try. And I am keeping aware that these teas that Ost is selling aren’t brand new fresh teas, but whoa, the vanilla is really lacking in this one. I can’t taste any. At all. I’ve always wondered at the name… ‘not so vanilla’? So maybe the trick is that vanilla isn’t in this tea at all. Haha. But the ingredients actually list actual vanilla beans, which I love when it’s included in a blend. I thought the black tea itself would be this very chocolate flavor, but the flavor was really just a middle of the road golden monkey. I wish I could try it fresh. I thought it would remind me of the French Breakfast blend from Octavia I wanted to buy for Black Friday this year. I didn’t expect magic from an older blend, but I did expect more than this… It’s almost like this is a completely different tea than most of the tasting notes mention. Sadly, it looks like Tippy’s is long gone so I suppose I’ll never try this tea fresh.
Steep #1 // 1 1/4 teaspoon // 18 minutes after boiling // 3 minute steep
Steep #2 // just boiled // 3-4 minute steep

My rating of 67 actually made the Steepster rating go down a point, so I will raise it until it was the same. Eh, actually I had to make the rating too high to change it back. So I will remain at a neutral 71.

VariaTEA

This tea was sooooo flavorful when it was fresh but it quickly lost the delicious vanilla. Given this tea is likely 2+ years old, I’m not surprised the vanilla is completely gone.

tea-sipper

But if there is actual vanilla beans, there should be SOME vanilla beans.

Cameron B.

I would expect real vanilla to lose its flavor much faster than vanilla flavoring.

tea-sipper

Hmm, well I did not know that. I wish teas didn’t age. haha

This is an old sample from Cavocorax. Thank you!

TBH, even though it’s an old sample, when I opened it up it smelled really good. And I must say I really enjoyed the tea! The base is lovely, and the vanilla came through nicely.

I think I might still prefer Vanilla Comoro from H&S, but only because that one’s a decaf, and sometimes I just want a black tea in the evening.

Doesn’t taste at all like pumpkin, but maybe it’s not intended to? The description mentions only ‘pumpkin pie spice.’ I’m not getting a lot of spice either, but there’s kind of a warm earthiness to the flavor that probably wouldn’t come from just tea alone. As the golden monkey base can easily stand on its own, I guess it doesn’t matter that this comes across as an unflavored tea.

I have this mixed with North Pole today.

So freaking sick IDEK.

So. Tea with some maple syrup. And soon a nap. I’ll need to go pick some things up later (meds, milk, easy food) so I need to rest up.

Is it still a disco nap if I have it at 10:30 am?

(Tea is not bad, but I can’t trust my taste buds.)

drank Minted Monkey by Tippy's Tea

I am exhausted! But on the very very positive side, more and more things are being ticked off my moving to do list every single day, which is probably a good thing since the move is happening in only three more weeks!!! The visa run to Canada went well and we were lucky enough to be able to spend a couple of days skiing in Whistler while waiting for the Embassy to return our passports (Yay!!) but now were home again and the packing nightmare continues…. So today I’m focusing on finishing our inventory sheets for the removalists and of course, drinking more sadly neglected tea I’m rediscovering at the back of my cupboard…

Tippy’s Tea’s thoughtfully puts the pack date on their packets and so I can quickly identify that this tea is almost 12 months old which explains the lack of mint flavor in the brewed cup… this makes me sad because its all my fault that this tea is probably not up to scratch on the flavor side because I forgot I had it… boo… but thankfully its still a tasty cuppa, just no mint… It tastes a little bit more like a breakfast tea at this point, malty, with a hint of cocoa and vanilla… all in all still a win, it just didn’t stand up to 12 months of neglect.

In the tea box from Phi. When I first brewed it, I got the scent of mint. The flavour is some creamy cocoa from the base, with mint, and hints of vanilla. Not something I’ve had before, but the flavours go well with the Golden Monkey.

This tea is thanks to CrowKettle!

It’s super mild. Definitely more of an afternoon tea than a kick-in-the-pants morning tea (hey, someone dropping coffee again can hope!).

I can tell it’s a Chinese black, but it’s not terribly complex. IDK. It’s nice, but I don’t think I’d go after this one myself.

Thanks for sharing, CrowKettle!

This is a lovely, full bodied tea. Deep, rich and smooth. The first thing I noticed was the smell when the bag was steeping in my mug. The scent was sweet and alluring. The chocolate and vanilla notes were the most prominent for me. I added a little agave nectar and milk and it made for a satisfying cup. I will have no trouble getting through my stash.

meh. this tastes like largely a cup of black tea. It’s not a bad cup but i’m really not getting much in the way of spices or pumpkin. Just a malty cup of black with hints of ginger and spice. thanks variaTEA!

FINALLY I’m reviewing this tea, CrowKettle! It’s been a long time coming.

And I like it.

It’s mostly nutmeg to me, and I’m doing many shorter steeps with my wee teapot.

It good. I’m kinda sad it’s taken me so long to get to this, but yum. :)

Not My Cup O’ Tea TTB

I’ve seen Tippy’s Tea quite a bit around Steepster, but this was my first opportunity to sample one of their blends. I have to say, I’m impressed! This is quite possibly the best vanilla tea I have ever tried. The base tea is a lovely chocolatey golden-tipped black that mingles perfectly with the rich vanilla flavor to create a truly decadent treat. I would definitely consider purchasing this one in the future!

Not a fan TTB. This doesn’t pair well with mac and cheese. Really a unique vanilla tea. for some reason I keep thinking of bourbon. Something about the woodiness of the base. The vanilla flavor doesn’t really hit until the after taste.

I love this review! That’s too bad that it did not work well with the mac and cheese and you did not enjoy this tea as much.

Not a fan TTB. I’ve been on an oolong kick for awhile. It’s amazing the depth and different types there are. I accidently steeped it around 6 mins. I tried it at 3 and found it was too light. Luckily with oolongs or at least this type steeping it longer doesn’t ruin it. This is a smooth tea. Green attributes like grass but the silkiness of an oolong. Quite lovely.

Sipdown (121)!

Yes Tippy’s, yeaaasssss!

I wasn’t a big fan of Tippy’s Midday Flight (the only other tea from Tippy’s I’ve tried) but I really want to love this company because they’re Canadian, affordable, and appear to have really great customer service! This particular blend from them has been on my wishlist for a long time now, and thanks to TheLastDodo I’m finally getting the chance to try it!

Recently I’ve discovered a love for Lapsang even though it used to be one of my least favourite teas. And this definitely isn’t making me feel crazy for the sudden change in interest! I’m picking up the smoke first and foremost, but it’s not too in your face. The many black teas in this blend are offering up some very nice, sweeter supporting notes to keep it from feeling monotone and too ashy; and the smoke notes in Keemun which I tend to dislike a lot are totally eclipsed by the smoke notes of the Lapsang.

Breaking down the sweeter notes; I’m getting stonefruit as well as much lighter cocoa notes. There’s also some mild malt notes, likely from the assam, and some wood notes which could be from a few of the different teas blended here. It’s very, very good!

And I think this is another “Lapsang” blend that is good for people trying to get into Lapsang for the first time too because it’s not as concentrated as a normal Lapsang is. Really, really happy I’m enjoying this because it just means it’s going to be that much more easy to eventually place an order with Tippy’s!

Though I just bought some Lapsang from Dammann Freres, so probably not for a while yet still. Plus, I’d like to try some of Tippy’s flavoured blends too.

Marzipan

And googly eyes. Don’t forget those.

Cool cool, second sipdown of the day. Drinking this felt a little forced, I’ll admit, as the base is not my thing. Just a little too earthy for my liking.

Such a slacker, not even writing about this one yet. This is my second cup by now and I’m on the fence. The spices are subtle. I pick up on ginger first, followed by cinnamon. The base doesn’t seem to jump out at me in heaviness as it does with other blends such as Not So Vanilla and Minted Monkey. Perhaps the spices cover up the earthiness more. I enjoy it the most with light cream.

The predominantly ginger flavouring reminds me of Butiki’s pumpkin blends, such as the last batch of Pumpkin Creme Brûlée, as well as Pumpkin Milkshake. Those seem to have a little more of an actual squash vibe, whereas this just seems like a tea dressed up with pumpkin pie spices.

Sipdown (130)!

I don’t know how, but I’m feeling more hungover now at 11:00PM than I felt all morning when I was actually hungover…

Finished this off as a pot of tea though; and I made sure that I took the time to pay attention to the flavour of it as every other time I’ve made steeped this up I’ve failed at doing so. What I observed was a solid trio of well balanced honey, cocoa, and malt notes that comprised a thick but very velvety and smooth liquor.

I actually now kind of get why people really dig this tea, and finally feel comfortable giving it a numerical rating; I’d likely revisit it again myself – but not sure whether or not I’d order it given how many comparable blends I’ve got. It would be great supporting a Canadian company, though.

Nicole

Sounds like something I could add to an order when I need more Minted Monkey. :)

Sooooo…

This was my daily cold brew; but as previously mentioned in today’s tasting notes I had the worst migraine ever, and honestly I ended up paying next to no attention to the flavour of the tea. Instead I kind of downed the whole 25 oz. in like three minutes because Tre suggested maybe I was hydrated from not drinking anything yet all day (this was my first tea of the day; but really also the first food I had all day), and that the caffeine would also help get rid of the headache.

Obviously neither ‘staying hydrated’ or caffeine helped much ‘cause the migraine continued to go on for another whole nine hours. What do I remember from the taste? Uhh, I briefly remember thinking “this is a lot better than the hot version I tried” – but I can’t pinpoint any specific flavours either.

Sorry VariaTEA hopefully I do a better job with the last cup worth of tea I’ve got left, ‘cause so far I’ve not had success with this tea taste wise but also in relation to reviewing…

Midday Flight? More like Midnight Flight…

Thank you VariaTEA for sending my first Tippy’s Tea blend my way! This is a company that’s received a lot of love here on Steepster and one I’ve debated ordering from so many times. I’ve done quite a bit of cart building! But, as much as I want to support a Canadian company (especially with our shitty dollar) the fact I’ve never tried any of their blends has always held me back. Now I’ve tried one of them!

Drank this one from a timolino on the walk home from work. It was about 11PM (hence ‘Midnight Flight’) and caffeine was probably a bad idea since it ended up taking me what felt like ages to fall asleep that night, but I needed something warm to get me through the drizzly walk. At least it’s a downhill walk home…

I’ll be totally honest; I went in with zero expectations for this tea and even still I ended up feeling pretty disappointed. And, it’s not like this tasted bad because it certainly didn’t. But all of the flavors felt kind of hollow and definitely didn’t resonate with me. I picked up on some really mild cinnamon and nutmeg sort of notes, earth notes, a bit of malt, but mostly what I was getting was smoke notes – and not the sort of strong Lapsang smoke notes I like but more so what I associate with Keemun. I thought that this was a Darjeeling/Assam blend?

Got home and looked it up before crashing for the night; sure enough this does actually have Keemun in it which is probably my least favourite ‘class’ of black tea. Damn, I wish I hadn’t tuned into the Keemun so much – I think I could have enjoyed this a lot otherwise.

However, I did receive a really generous sample of this one from VariaTEA so I’m definitely going to play around and try and get this one to work out better for me. I’m thinking milk might help this one out, or the Cinnabon creamer I have since I had already picked up some spice notes. In the mean time I’m holding off on rating this one.

Upon opening the bag, the dry leaf has a distinctive lapsang smoke smell, which is quite nice and different from my other usual teas.
Brewed taste is delicious and full-bodied with malt, smoke and an almost salty note. This makes a perfect pot in the morning and I really like it a lot!
