Cocomama Lime

Black Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Spread the wealth
Looking for some Inca gold? Try Cocomama’s tea. She was the Incan goddess of pleasure and health, and would have loved this sensual spring blend of lime, coconut, gotu kola and organic black tea. The tea leaves come from Bolivia, part of her vast empire, where a new initiative is helping some of Latin America’s poorest farmers plant tea instead of coca. Try it; it’s satisfying on so many levels.

I received this tea as sample with my David’s Tea order. I tried it hot and that may have been a mistake. I really don’t detect much of a coconut flavor which is odd because the tea to coconut ratio looks to be nearly even in the dry tea. Also, the lime tastes a bit bitter to me. The black tea is nice and almost understated, but then I come back to a bitter lime rind aftertaste.

I’m a HUGE David’s Tea fan, but this one s not one of my favorites. Sorry David…

Backlogging – I got a sample of this tea in my tea order. I am really glad they sent this one because I seriously had no interest at all in lime in my tea. But wow. This is good. I am happy I divided this tiny sample into 2 cups because I am going to want more. Sadly, I have to save up my tea purchases to get DavidsTea because of the high shipping costs, so by the time I run out of tea, this seasonal tea will probably be gone.

It took me a while to figure out exactly what this tastes like. Have you ever had that margarita in a bucket? The kind where you add the mix and the tequila in a bucket and put it in the freezer? That’s it. That is what it tastes like. That sweet liquid that you suck out of the frosty ice shavings. Nom!

I wonder how much it would cost to get someone from Canada to ship some in a padded envelope? I’d think it would only be a few bucks for shipping but I am not sure. I unfortunately do not have any decent tea stores near my house to volunteer to get tea from for a Canadian. I could offer up some samples of things from my house in exchange for the effort if anyone is interested.

My office was rather warm today and I kind of wanted tea, but the thought of hot tea wasn’t doing it for me. So I steeped this up really strong, 3 tsp/10 oz/4 min, added some agave nectar, and then poured it over ice. It was so freakin’ yummy! This makes a great iced tea.

This blend is very smooth for a black with almost none of the tannins I can usual taste in an Asian black tea. There’s a creamy note that I’m not sure if it’s the coconut or the base itself, but whichever it is it’s quite nice. The lime isn’t overpowering but it adds a nice little citrus zing to the blend. Too bad this one seems to have been discontinued.

Another tea that I’m trying from my Hoppitea package from Fairyfli. Probably the first tea that I’ve tried that really smells like keylime pie. The aroma is marvelous. I am really liking this tea. The lime tartness is great but not overpowering. The black tea is good too. I can’t really taste coconut here but I can tell that it mellows out the lime. This is very tasty! This might be one I have to add the the cupboard when I go on my next tea spree. :)

I love all the tea recipes floating around lately. I was intrigued by the Cocomama Lime chicken idea in the March newsletter, and decided to give it a try, albeit with turkey. I steeped some Cocomama Lime extra-strong and marinated the turkey with the tea, lots of garlic, salt, and a tiny bit of lime juice for a few hours then baked it.

The flavour was really interesting! It tasted very Thai-inspired with the coconut and lime. I sprinkled a little extra coconut over the meat when serving, and it looked great as well. I think this would work well on fish especially, maybe lightly breaded. I’ll also have to try it in a more Thai-themed meal. It’s very cool adding flair to meats with tea. So many options!

So, the only time I’ve had this hot was an in-store sample. They said it was steeped quite lightly and it was alright but I wasn’t a huge fan. The warm + lime kind of bothers me.

I cold-brewed some today and am quite enjoying it. It’s really light and brewing it hot and then icing would lead to a more flavourful tea, but this is really refreshing and tasty and the right amount of lime for me.

Cold-brewed again, for quite a long time this time.

It gets very limey and it is refreshing, but the lime starts tasting a little artificial. I don’t know. I don’t know if I am tasting the coconut, either. It’s interesting and it’s refreshing but I think I prefer it cold-brewed for less time.

Anyway, it’s a relief for there to be a tea I won’t miss terribly when it leaves.

Well first things first, I ordered several different teas from Davids Tea and I absolutely love the sample tins they send… it is perfect to store for on the go! Anyways I ordered some of the kit teas and the accidentally sent me the wrong one. After writing to them they responded quite promptly and told me to keep the kit and they were going to send me the other kit and some more samples…:) They were so nice talk about service!

Ok on to the tea,
I loved the smell of this tea, you can smell the lime and then a hint of coconut sweetness, can’t really smell the tea but for me that is ok! :)

Before brewing it, I decided that I mainly wanted to try this iced..so I made sure to double the amount and brewed it for 6min.. the most for this tea. Poured it over ice and took it to school with me. The tea smelled like limes and hint of tea, I lost the smell of the coconut after steeping. I had a bit left in the tea maker and sipped it. It was good but kind of strange drinking warm lime?!?! It was also a bit astringent, but I think that next time I will brew for 5 min. Thought for sure this was going to be much better iced.

When I got to school I took a sip and WOW this was so refreshing iced. I highly recommend this tea if you like limes. It is like drinking a bit of tea with a smoothness or hint of sweetness from the coconut (can’t really taste the coconut) and then the pop of lime. It is really good almost like limeaid! Yum Yum Yum

I would like to start by saying that I love coconut and lime and this tea seemed made for me.
I sampled it at the store (David’s tea has a tea of the day) and loved the lime coconut flavor and smell, i bought 25g to try it and see if i like this, warning 25g does not get you a lot of tea it’s very heavy and dense so you get maybe 3 or 4 cups out of this.

upon steeping you really smell the lime!

the lime is what really shines here but you get the black tea as well, the coconut is more in the aftertaste, very smooth and creamy.

Nice pick me up on a day like today, while theres a snow storm outside i can imagine myself on a beach sipping a margarita!

After reading another tasting note that said that this gets better the longer it steeps, I tried it out again in my big glass teapot. This isn’t a very dark black tea, and similarly the taste is very light. The lime is zingy, but not overpowering. I enjoyed the hint of coconut, which was much softer than the buttered rum I had this morning.

There’s nothing bitter about this tea, so it’s nice to slowly sip at without worrying about oversteeping it. Even as it got cold it was still tasty, so I’m sure it would be lovely iced. Definitely a go-to for my long paper writing sessions!

I initially didn’t think that I’d be able to take this tea seriously just because this name (which was all but immediately shot down by my friends) – but I love Buttered Rum and I love lime, so this seemed fairly natural for me to want to try.

Similar to Fantasy Island – which doesn’t surprise me, considering they’re fairly similar teas – this gets better the longer it’s steeped. Unlike the Fantasy Island, this gets somehow both sickly sweet and quite bitter without warning – one sip was perfectly timed, the next was oversteeped.

Overall, it’s good, especially if you’re a fan of their Lime Bang. I’d recommend giving this a try if you like both coconut and lime, since the two flavours mingle quite well with one another around the black tea and the kola nut. I can’t help but to compare it to Fantasy Island, though, and this just pales in comparison for me.

The dry tea smells alternately limey and coconutty. They’re both excellent smells, but together they’re almost off-putting. Like they’d taste like orange and toothpaste or milk and mustard.
When it steeps, the tea is a fairly “ordinary” black tea colour. I almost never drink black teas without milk, but the lime has me trying this one as naked as the day it was born. There’s a delightful skiff of oil drops on the top of the liquid. Presumably from lime oil? I love oily teas, so that makes me happy.
The lime in the steeped tea almost smells minty. Again, almost off-putting. But I needs me some black tea, so let’s do this!
ZINGY! I LOVE the lime. I may put lime in all of my black teas from now on. Full disclosure: I just ate two pieces of raisin toast, but I can’t taste the coconut at all at first. Just lime and black tea. The SMELL is there for sure, but it’s hiding behind the lime kind of like a fearful pre-schooler hides behind his mom. (Also, I can’t slurp/aerate the tea as much as I’d like to/usually do because my husband is watching television and it sounds ultra-rude.)
Nope. Even after I let it cool off a bit and let it sit in my mouth a LOT, it’s all lime, lime, lime.
This isn’t a complaint per se, because the lime is just so lovely, but I wish I could taste coconut as well. Me likey da lime in da coconut. (See what I did there?)

Sitting here getting ready to work, watching videos I shouldn’t be~ (the leaked 17 minute 9/11 video shot from a helecopter that shows footage of the towers complete with real-time videographer reactions), I decided to cheer myself up with some Cocomama Lime with a touch or so of lemon honey in my World’s Best Mom mug.
Smells limey and coconutty enough! More like a summer drink than a spring drink. Something you’d ask for in broken spanish at a swim-up bar in the Mayan Riveria. It feels like I should be tossing some long island iced tea mix in there. Maybe a little cheer-up paper umbrella or a slice of lime on a little plastic sword. It certainly wouldn’t hurt!
Even though I’m trying to chase away a chill that started this morning, it’s almost disappointing that this tea is hot. Don’t get me wrong, it’s DELICIOUS hot, but I want it to be in a sweaty tumbler and hear the tinkle of ice clinking against glass and ice. I will certainly try this iced later on in the week when the temperature is supposed to venture into the more moderate just-below-freezing point instead of the morale-crunching -27 degrees I woke up to.
The honey brings out the body and sweetness of the coconut, but the lime is really the star of this tea. It sneaks in and runs through sprinklers in your mouth; it invites its friends over for an impromptu back-yard hot dog BBQ pool party when it is still FAR too cold to be semi-naked outdoors; it goes on slurpee runs when all of the short-order cooks are having difficulty coping with the increased levels of heat and humidity and could really use an icy treat~~.
A little bit fun, a little bit bad, a whole lot of good.

~I don’t know why I do it; am perpetually upsetting myself by seeing things I can’t un-see. It started in high school and just hasn’t gotten any better. Some kind of psychological auto-masochisma.
~~When I worked at Applebee’s and Chili’s, the most popular person/manager of the day would offer to run to 7-Eleven during a break or between split shifts and pick up slurpees for everyone once it got too hot outside to feel good about working for 12-16 hours over a deep-fryer or flat-top grill.

This was the first tea I left Davids Tea with, and although I forgot about the tea and ended up over steeping it I was still impressed enough to go back and purchase this tea for my shelf. It has now become a part of my week day morning ritual… Delish!

Mmmmmm, how I missed you!

I could not get to work fast enough to steep this today, and it was delicious down to the last drop!! God I love teas that have citrus in it.

It’s not as I remember it, I am still tasting a LOT of lime rind and nothing else. There is a slight astringency that lets me know the black tea is there, but that is about it.

I am really sad, because this was my first DAVIDsTEA experience, and although I know it was not be my last; it is still saddening to know that it is just not for me anymore.

NOPE, this is the 4th steep and I checked my kettle temp its fine, there is something wrong with this tea!

WHAT HAPPENED!?!

I have steeped this three times, with no luck! The leaves are not steeping!

Maybe my water is not hot enough! Is it possible that I need a new kettle? It’s one is only a year old! This is an OUTRAGE!!

I was happy to get a sample tin of this one, because I wouldn’t have bought it without smelling or trying it first.
You can see lots of lime peel and coconut shreds, plus it smells intensely sweet and limey, dry. I steeped the whole sample (1 and 1/4 davids perfect teaspoon-ful) for 6 minutes, and the lime smell got mellower, but it still very present. I took a sip, and was surprised. It tasted like lime with black tea, and kind of bitter (I steeped it for the longest time suggested, and used less water since I’ll be adding icecubes to cool it down).
It was really decent though! Love how the black tea was present almost as much as the lime. (No coconut yet though…)
It definitely needed sugar though, so I added almost 2 tsps! (I like my iced tea much sweeter than if it was hot.)
Anyways let it cool down completely in the freezer for a bit, and now it tastes quite nice. Just like a good iced tea spiked with lime. Definitely not much coconut though, if any.
If you enjoy lime in your drinks, this is a tea for you. I don’t always care for it, but have to admit that this is another job pretty well done from Davids tea!

This was one of my DT samples. It was ok. Very limey. I could not taste the coconut at all. It made me sad that it was so one dimensional… kindof like a limeade, only hot.
I think I’ll try the rest of the sample iced.
Well, I have nothing against this tea, but I simply do not love it. I had such high hopes!

Having this iced right now. I think I should have added a splash of lemon juice to it but it is still pretty good. And it is so hot here that this is really good and satisfying. The lime isn’t quite strong enough but it may be a little overpowered by the coconut. Still really good. So glad I decided to try this iced.

Just had this the other day when I happened to pop in to the store. I got to say, if there was a competition between berries and citrus, citrus would always win in my world. So, there’s no surprise here that the lime in this lovely concoction won me over, not only with its delicious scent, but the subtly tangy taste it adds as well.

And then they added coconut. Well, that’s it right there. I’m sold. Lovely tea, I could sip on cup after cup after cup…after cup :)

I bought this tea because I liked how good it smelled in the tin. This is the 4th time I’ve tried this tea at home and I just don’t care for it. The lime is nice in first sip or two, but then it wears down on me. Guess I am just not a fan of limes. :/

OMG where do I start? I have been searching for a LIME tea for ages now and poked my head into DAVIDsTEA and low and behold they have Cocomama Lime and Lime Bang. I smelled the Cocomama Lime and was hooked immediately! Great coconut taste without overpowering and not too sweet mixed with the tangy lime and the gotu cola just rounds it off. This IS my NEW tea thank you SO much DAVIDsTEA for carrying not one but multiple versions of lime. I promise to try Lime Bang soon!

One fresh sampler of the Spring Collection in my teapot, amazing? Well, it’s good but it’s not amazing. The smell is amazing! But, the taste just… Taste like any other lime-tea i’ve tasted. I’ve didn’t even taste any little subtile aftertaste to make a difference with other lime-tea.

Overall, the quality of taste is great. If you want a daily lime tea and you love black tea, buy it. If you like green tea more than black tea, buy “Lime-Bang” which is way more impressive.

I received this as a sample awhile ago and finally got around to using it this morning. I initially was put off by the idea of coconut as I’m not a fan but decided to risk it as I’m just bored with what is in my cupboard. I steeped it for quite a long time (forgot I had made it actually) and found myself enjoying the subtle lime flavour. I couldn’t detect the coconut at all which is probably for the better.

I don’t think I would shell out money for this but if I had another sample I wouldn’t be disappointed. I do love me some citrus teas.
