From Butiki Teas

Our Taiwanese Wild Mountain Black originates from indigenous wild tea plants grown between 2,500 feet and 5,000 feet in the surrounding mountains of Yuchi Township in Taiwan. The tea picking season for this tea is July through August and the supply is limited because the tea is wild. During this time, the tea master will wake up around 4 a.m. to travel the mountains with local tea pickers in search of wild tea. Similar to our Gui Fei Oolong and Mi Xian Black, the leaves of our Wild Mountain black are also bitten by leafhoppers. These bites cause the plant to initiate the healing process which produces sweet honey notes. The honey aroma is unbelievably strong and inviting. Notes of fresh baked pastries and honey linger. Some gentle raisin and caramel notes are also present in this smooth and refreshing tea.

Recommended Brew Time: 4 minutes
Recommended Amount: 2 teaspoons of tea for 8oz of water Recommended Temperature: 212 F (boiling)

I’m sure I have reviewed this one before. Odd. I think Steepster has eaten some of my notes because there are other teas I have made notes on that didn’t show on later steeps.

Anyway, this is a good tea. It is smooth for a black, with no bitterness or astringency. There are light cocoa and raisin notes to me, with a bit of sweetness. It’s really a nice straight black tea. This is one that I can have without milk…though I did sweeten a little.

Thanks to CrowKettle for letting me try this little bit of gold. It’s really tasty.

Funny thing…

I was actually getting done posting my write-up about this tea (which you can find here: http://steepstories.com/2014/02/25/taiwans-wild-side-big-brass-butikis-round-1/) when I thought to myself, Oh yeah! I should brew up some of that! First time that’s ever happened. So, for my way-to-work tea, I brewed some of this up.

SO much going on here – cocoa, malt, mint…uh…awesomeness. I seriously wish I had more of the stuff. It has all the features I adore in Taiwanese black teas plus a little roughness behind the edges – like porno hair. (Wait ,no!)

Hmmmm, well I’m biased and like to think that most of the teas have interesting origin stories but here are a few ones I like:

With Open Eyes (strawberry, toffee, ginger, buttery dragon well)-based off of a painting and the tea had to be completely made in less then a week (usually takes months to fully complete a tea) for a project that consists of 130 artists and that tea is the inspiration for a Wes Craven Character/plot. Hello Sweetie-Coconut, Toffee, praline, banana, Premium Taiwanese Assam. Really fun custom blend that took both me and the customer down a random path. James was initially looking for a coconut cream pie puerh.

Watermelon Xylophone-Came up with the name after hours on a trip to pretty much nowhere.

Foxy Roxy’s Banana Walnut Treat-A random customer mention while we were having an email conversation, which just happened to be at the same time I was working on a banana tea and decided to make a sample based on her ideas.

I like the stories behind pretty much everything except maybe a few of our older staple teas. Right now I’m working with my mother-in-law on a special tea based off of a Philippino dessert.

This tea has a very clear natural honey sweet smell mixed with a little cocoa and a hint of maltiness.

Very smooth, little to no astringency/bitterness. A light sweet taste with cocoa at the back of the palette.

On my resteep I tried adding milk and sugar for the first time and to my surprise it brought out a different dimension in the tea. A tea that’s enjoyable no matter how you have it.
