Award Winning Yun Nan Dian Hong Black Tea – Golden Tip

This is my first time trying a Golden Tip tea. I did not know what to expect. It is a mild black tea with a nice amber-orange color. I brew Gaiwan style. After the 3rd steep I could really smell and taste the sweet potatoes. I still prefer my green tea but this is nice, in the morning. Today it replaced my black coffee and it went really well with my freshly baked peanut butter cookies. They pair really well together. I would drink this tea with dessert again. Thanks to TeaVivre, another nice tea!

Another from my recent Teavivre order and definitely one of my favorites :). The tea has small leaves that are a mix of black and golden. They smell extremely bready and produce an oak-colored brew. At first sip this tea shouts “BREAD!” and I’m like, thanks tea, I think I will. Once you get past the bread bomb, a buttery quality asserts itself along with a little malt, sweetness, and a slight tang at the very end of the sip that is kind of citrus-y in nature. This tea is smooth and mellow, very like what you might expect from a yunnan. You can tell that it’s high quality and also just plain yummy :).

This is a very lovely tea, and smells almost like a dessert when you open it up, with just a hint of sweetness. The sample pouch was still golden on the inside after I transferred the tea to the tea bag. THe tea itself is just like the picture above, though I think I have a slightly higher black to gold ratio. I used the whole sample bag, because I’m not that comfortable with tea measurements yet, and the website recommends 6 grams.

As soon as I started pouring the water into my teapot, the tea started brewing – sadly, the lid to my teapot got stuck, so to get it off I ended up breaking it. Now I have ceramic in my tea… I did salvage most of my tea, and it does have a lovely smell brewed, like sweet potatoes.

It has a very mellow flavor that reminds me of green tea or maybe even a clear broth. It’s rather soothing. Maybe next time I brew it, I won’t end up with a broken teapot, but regardless of that the tea tastes delicious.

Baked Bread. Sweet Potatoes. Chocolate. Honey. Earth.
Goodness, it’s been a while since I’ve had this! Much too long! Enjoyed drinking this one while I played a few rounds of darts with my younger bro and our friend. Tea and good company is always a fantastic combo! If only they were tea drinkers too!
Even so, happy to still have lots of this tea! ^^

This Dian Hong sort of smells like an Earl Gray. I’m getting fruity hints similar to bergamot accompanied by warm bread and honey. The taste is a little deeper and more malty with honey and apricot notes. It’s got a nice lightness and sweetness too it, while still being rich and syrupy. The scent really is so wonderful. There’s a subtle floral quality as well.

I’m impressed. I think this tea has great depth and quality and I could drink it regularly.

PS I am feeling much better today. Glad my bird is no longer suffering. Just exhausted/emotional hangover from yesterday. Whew.

One of my requested free samples from Angel at Teavivre. I was very surprised when I saw this tea. Usually when a tea is called golden tips it means there are golden tips included. This one looks like it’s almost all golden tips! It smells malty and there is a strong apricot scent along with some honey.

First time, I did a 4 minute steep at about 190 degrees. The aroma is very malty with honey and a light stonefruit note along with some raisin. It tastes like yummy toasty bread with some honey over the top. Maybe a tiny bit of peach or apricot jam. Very tasty!

I saw that a lot of people had mentioned sweet potato so I tried a 3 minute steep. The flavor is definitely lighter, but it’s still primarily malt. I can see how it might be a little sweet potatoey. The honey is still there but I don’t really taste fruit anymore. Overall, I think I preferred the longer steep, especially with a touch of sugar. And it doesn’t seem to be astringent in the least.

I got this as part of my Giveaway Sampler. The golden tipped leaves are rather pretty. And I get a lovely aroma of sweet potatoes both from the dry leaves and the brew. There seems to be more honey in the flavour, but I do get the potato as well. It seems to have hints of nuts too. Thanks Teavivre for being so good at picking my teas.

Continue to enjoy this tea and while I get different notions of flavors based upon temperature and steep time, the smoothness of this tea continue to impress.

Shelf life being what it is, time to reorder so the tin is full.

This was my second time with this tea and the words to describe it still escape me. I enjoy this tea, but it is not one that I crave. It has a quality about it that I just can’t describe. It is sweet, but more ice tea sweet than, potato/bread sweet. I am not sure if that makes sense at all. I guess to try another angle it is a lighter bodied tea that has more hints of honey and hay than bread and sweet potatoes. I have enough for one more session and I hope to be able to describe what I am tasting a little better next time.
