I bought a can of this the other day and finally tried it after lunch! Does it count as a different tea because the vessel is not a bottle? Hmmm.
Anyhow, the tea itself was ho-hum. It would have done much better with my tastebuds if it’d been just slightly sweet. I don’t mean Nestea sweet… maybe a third of that!
This was a little bitter, and roasted which I didn’t mind. The part that really threw me off though, was the eggy flavour!! So odd. I’ve never come across “egg” in a tea. Cooked, sweet egg- the kind one sees in sushi etc (Tamago)
I doubt I’ll purchase this again, but if someone offered it to me no charge… I’d drink up no problem!
It was refreshing and satisfying, if nothing else. I’m still curious to try the other flavours they have, but rarely do I see any of them at our local Asian grocery

Kashyap

find the golden-yellow version of this…its a un-sweetened oolong that is much better

This was just what I wanted. I love hitting that craving with a tea! It’s such an awkward feeling for me to be wanting a tea that I haven’t got at the moment… and trying to settle for something else.
Anyhow, I think I’ll hold this at 85. It was good, quite… but I do believe that there is a better smoother version of it out there, for all that people rave about it.
Funny, when I looked in the bag this morning there was less there than I remember leaving. It makes me wonder if my colleague at work sampled it, and forgot to mention to me… I’d be thrilled if that were the case! I could use a de-cupboarding and now I’m just a little closer to it! :)
Oh and the second steep was good as well. I think the trick is to use less leaf.

Yeah… so I caved! Bought some of this the other day. I figured, if it can replace my expensive and unwanted coffee habit (I neeeed the caffeine, just not the jitters!) then it’s techically saving me monies, right?
Anyhow, I’m also breaking in a new kettle!!! SO excited :)
—though not as much as I thought I would be. The whole “purchasing a kettle then finding out it couldn’t be used at the office” debacle kinda stole that esctacy from me…
SO, the tea? well, I shant rate it any differently this time. I think some of the chemicals are leftover in the kettle, as this tastes a little off. I boiled it twice, and washed it out, what more do I need to do!?
This is my second time getting foiled having this tea. Oh well. I’m still happy about my kettle :)
—Next time, I will write a proper note!! promise

Ashley Bain

well that’s disappointing! boo.

Indigobloom

yes, it does!! but I won’t let it get me down this time. Good tea is on the way! well, it better be… or else I will have that tantrum!

Uniquity

When we bought a stovetop kettle from DT it took a few goes before that weird taste went away. That annoyed me quite a bit, but thankfully it’s normal now!

Tasty!!
and guess what? I finally scratched some of that toasty oolong itch :)
Now, it was a little fruity to really rub out the craving, but a nice start! I love that the tea was sweet and tart all at once. I definitely got a “tropical fruit” flavour in there, and I think I can pinpoint the mango, and maybe even the pineapple but I’m probably just imagining that.
Anyhow, I found this quite enjoyable. Oh and bonus! I managed to keep the bag for a second steep even though this was an in store cuppa purchase :P
—the second steep was just as fruity, roasty, and flavourful as the first though maybe a tad lighter in a way that detracted nothing from the taste at all. In fact, I think I rather enjoyed the second steep more, since the first was a touch thick.
If I didn’t know for a fact that there are other oolongs for me to love out there, I would consider buying me a supply of this for the house.
One other thing: in a strange way, this almost reminds me of Forbidden Fruit. Am I the only tea-freak getting that???

Kittenna

I am getting serious Forbidden Fruit memories too!!

Indigobloom

yay, proof that I’m not crazy! (entirely that is)

Seriously!!! this tea was so good at one point. What happened? you poor little assam, did some horse trample your delicate leaves and trail it’s waste all through your fields??
I gave this one last chance… loaded it up with agave and milk… and even then it was just “ok”.
Lowering the rating here pains me, but it must be done. So… Why do I feel like a parent scolding her children? and why do I feel so guilty for it?
Because I’m so dissapointed by the lack of depth, maltiness, and general dusty flavour, when I know it has such potential? or maybe because the DT version is loads better?
Gah! I’m done with you Assam Banaspaty. You may be drinkable, but not in comparison to so many other teas.

MaddHatter

Yikes that bad? I am sorry to hear that.

Indigobloom

It wouldn’t be so bad if it hadn’t been so good at one point, but nothing can be good all the time I suppose. I’ll try this again next year when the new batches are in :)

MaddHatter

fingers crossed!

Indigobloom

hehe yes!!
or I could simply go to teaopia’s competition :P

ashmanra

I know there was an Assam that Bliss rated once as nearly perfect, and months later tried it again and it was awful. Maybe it is a peculiarity of Assams.

Indigobloom

oooOOooo?? that IS odd. I’ve noticed that with other black teas but not so drastic.

I hit the sweet spot with this one baby!! oh it was just what I needed… so good!
Somehow, it made my evening turn into something not so bad, even though my day started out all gloomy and depressing.
It makes me want to find a real chocolate rooibos. I haven’t had any luck with that just yet but perhaps I’ll start looking again now. I’ll need something to replace this one soon enough!
—Well, maybe. I am seriously considering replacing it.

I tried this again today. Yep, still not impressed.
Next time, maybe an add of mint will break up the cloudiness in the brew. (I’m not kidding, it comes out a dusty brown colour)
The description names mint as an ingredient but it doesn’t make an appearance in the flavour, maybe a hint but not enough!
If more spearmint fails to save the day, this goes on my share list! Lemongrass and and chamomile together just aren’t doing it for me. Separately? heck yeah!
*sighs…. makes me sad that they don’t play well :(

So I really needed a tin, something we were doing at work, a silly project- don’t ask… and I figured, well I may as well fill it with something, it will cost less that way!
So I bought some of this. I needed a non-chocolatey tea. Only now, I am almost regretting it. Assam banaspaty is good to… maybe I need them both *sighs
Or I could just start using up the stuff I have at home. Big trouble that would be, to bring it into the office! ha.
Anyhow, on to the tea. It was just ok this AM. I’m not sure what the difference was… but the toastiness was just not there. Oh well… it got me through the morning!

Not bad not bad!
More rosy this time, I think, and yet still chocolatey… not as smooth though.
Oh, and I tried it with milk. Nicer than I expected! It reminds me of what I imagine Earl Grey tastes like to the normal folk out there- the EG I so fervently wish I could partake in!
So…. I’ve made myself a compromise. Henceforward, in my mind, this is an “Indigobloom Early grey” :)

MaddHatter

Yay, for finding an “Earl Grey” for you!!

Indigobloom

hehe thx! I’m craving it again already- odd for me, I’ll go through my whole stash and still find myself wishing for something else :P

meh. In fact, double meh!
This was not good. Hot, I got very little flavour. As it cooled, I found some “oolong”, but it came along with that tell-tale bergamot nausea… (for those who don’t follow me, I have a negative sensitivity towards it) and then finally near the end of the cuppa, it got better. Not by any means good, but better.
There are very few things I could really say about the flavour, being so bland. I do recall some mild nuttiness, and a few bitter moments but nothing that made any sort of lasting impression.
If I try this again and get those same results… I’ll lower the score some more, but for now I shall lower it to a humble 77. I was so looking forward to an oolong this AM. If only it had been more like the first time I sampled this tea!!

Profile

Bio

Let’s see… I’m a tea and workout fanatic, I work in HR, and most of my friends consider me to be an egg. White on the outside, Asian on the inside :)
-from philosophy to food, I love it all
Otherwise, what you see is what you get! I can be very straightforward and yet shy.

Also, I’ve started taking tea sommelier classes and it is an absolute blast! Well, so far I’ve only finished the first out of eight courses, but I am really looking forward to the next one.

Anyhow, if your curious as to how I rate things, this is how I work…

0-25
Like eating dirt, or some other unsanitary indelicacy that mentioning in my profile here would likely get me banned.
I don’t think I’ve found cause to banish a tea to the wasteland yet though so who knows what it’d inspire ;P

25-50
You know that expression “Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater”? I imagine drinking that water would be terrible enough to warrant this rating!
I’d never make my enemy drink this, but perhaps I’d throw it at them. Good thing I don’t have any enemies!

50-70
This is “tea”?? I tried finishing the cup… but my body rejected it. There may be others who enjoy this tea, but it’s beyond me!

70-80
I tried liking it, and I can almost get there! I certainly don’t hate it, but something is holding me back. Allergies? Men in white suits? who knows… certainly not me!

80-90
Lovely tea! Not my all time fave but close. I likely wouldn’t repurchase, but may decide to based on many factors: price, accessibility, whether it fills a “tea gap”, medicinal applications, and how often I crave it.
Every once in awhile I find the sweet spot that bumps these up to 90+. Those are the days I need to buy a lotto ticket!

90-95
Sweet Camellia! this is realllly good tea! Don’t talk to me until I’ve finished my cup…

95-100
Tea of the gods. I would do anything to get my hands on more of this liquid gold!
