Creme Brulee

Rooibos Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Sweet seduction

No one can resist this organic green rooibos tea. Seriously. The aroma is just too outrageously tempting. Creamy, caramel, decadent, rich. And the taste! How can something so sweet be so light and fresh? Plus, some experts are saying that the special antioxidants and alpha hydroxy acids in green rooibos will fight aging and improve your health. Could life be more wonderful?

Ingredients: green and red rooibos, safflowers, calendula marigold.

I got this from Davids as an “instead of paying shipping I can get one more tea” tea.

Upon opening the bag, wow, there’s a lot of color in there. It smells a lot like caramel.

Knowing it was a dessert tea, I steeped it with a bit of German rock sugar and immediately added a splash of milk.

WOW.

This tastes like I’m drinking creme brulee. It tastes like I’m drinking dessert. I don’t understand it, I really don’t. It was almost off-putting how accurate the flavor was. I found it difficult to finish the cup, not because it was bad, but because it was the wrong time of day for it (if that makes any sense).

Last fall at the end of one of my posts I ended with “Please, sir, I want some more”, & then offered to send my xmas CD to the first person who guessed what movie it was a quote from. Michelle won!! I sent her the CD & some tea samples as a prize. About a month ago I got a surprise package in return, loaded with generous samples of tea & a cute little note wishing me a good day! Thanks Michelle!

So this tea is in there, & since I was looking around for one more ‘no caffeine’ cup to end my day, this one seemed like a perfect fit.
Since I’m allergic to milk, I’ve never had a creme brulee, but I’m wondering if I could make something like that with canned coconut milk…like an egg custard, topped with brown sugar, set under the broiler briefly…hmmm…of course, I don’t really eat brown sugar either…maybe some date sugar…

Ooops! I got off track into fantasy world. This is a tasty tea, it looks like a pretty little confetti, & in spite of the fine milling , I didn’t get any rooibos stuck on my tonsils, so it was a win.

My very first order ever from DAVIDsTEA arrived on my porch this evening! Hooray!

This is a creamy, burnt sugar-esqe rooibos dessert tea. There is definitely something artificial about it – almost like one of those flavored creamers (which is actually a flavor I kinda like every now and again).

I wanted to try this as-is first, but in the back of my mind I planned to use this as a mixer with my rooibos chai to make a vanilla/caramel chai. I think it will be better suited to that purpose than straight drinking. Don’t get me wrong — it’s satisfying by itself — but I think it will be fantabulous with chai spices. I used to do this with a slightly fakey creme roobois from Teavana and it was one of my favorite caffeine-free things in the world. I’ll post another review when I make a mix with this to tell you if it lives up to my dreams :)

I must have been in super magpie mode (shiiiiiiiny!) the day I placed my order because I got some crazy stuff. Look for gold balls, tiny sugar lips, and all kinds of nonsense in my upcoming reviews!

I tried a perfect teaspoon of this with a perfect teaspoon of Mountain Rose Herb’s Firefly chai (a rooibos chai) and it was quite delicious. I liked it much better than the creme brulee alone. I could have used a wee bit more spice, and I wonder if a three (chai) to one (creme brulee) ratio might be even better. I’ll have to give that a whirl next.

Thank you to Kittenna for this lovely tea.
I am enjoying the creamy fruitiness.
I am not sure it is truly a creme brulee flavor here – I guess it depends on if you have some berries with your creme brulee but its good for whatever it is.
I do love the green rooibos base teas!!
Thank you for allowing me to give this a try!

Creme Brulee is a wonderful dessert, and if it’s on the menu when I go out to eat you can bet that I’ll order it no matter what else they’re offering. My favorite Japanese place has a black sesame creme brulee that is heaven on earth… urgh, just thinking about it is torture, I want some right now! I really wasn’t expecting this tea to live up to the magical taste of creme brulee though, even though I know custard and burnt sugar are flavorings that you can definitely capture in tea-form since I’ve had them before. But I read the reviews, so my hopes weren’t too high.

I think this smells better than it tastes—sniffing the cup is awesome, you get the custard, caramel, even the burnt sugar! However, most of it is lost when you drink this. There’s a strong caramel taste and maybe a hint of creaminess (I added milk before tasting it so I’m not sure how much of that is the tea) but absolutely none of that crunchy topping goodness. I have about 2 servings left in my sample, so I think I’ll try to just make some burnt sugar and put some in when it brews.

I really dislike rooibos—or rather, red rooibos, this is my first experience with green and I liked it. Mostly because I couldn’t really taste it, it’s very innocuous in this blend. Maybe a tiny note of herbiness, but no icky medicinal aftertaste. All in all this is a decent dessert tea, but I don’t know if I’ll be purchasing it on its own.

One of my favorite desserts in the whole world is creme brûlée. It is so creamy and scrumptious… I felt I needed something delicious to make up for a long, busy, pretty productive yet very hectic and stressful Monday. This tea (received in a swap from Indigobloom!) seemed like just the thing I needed to relax.

The smell of the dry leaves was vanilla with a strong caramel component. The rooibos was a prominent note in the scent as well. This worried me. Not a huge fan of rooibos flavor. The rooibos was decorated with tiny yellow flowers, but overall did not strike me as a particularly picturesque blend.

While I brewed this tea (I brewed it for a long while) a caramel sweet smell was comming from the cup. I was busy enjoying the scent when my dogs decided it was a good time to brawl. I thankfully broke them up before anyone got hurt, but I was psychologically exhausted and not willing to deal with jealousy fits at the moment. So, once everything calmed down, I was ready to sip this.

First sip, increadibly unremarkable rooibos vanilla. Second sip, liked it even less. Time for sweetener. Sweetened it tasted sweet, ROOIBOS (note the HUGE caps) and chemical caramel. The aftertaste was the sadest part for me. Instead of having a smooth creamy after taste that I was looking forward to, I just gor a mouthful of chemical wierdness that somehow reminded me of Davids Tea Carrot Cake which I detested. I drank the cup down quickly hiding my disapointment from my dogs who were now staring at me curiously as a stared aimlessly at the empty tea cup.

This could have been delicous, sadly, it barely made the “meh” points in my opinion. I might drink this if shared with me, but I would never go out of my way to buy it. There are much better caramel vanilla teas out there…

Back from jiu jitsu and SOOO freaking hungry! I could probably eat and entire pizza or something right now, must resist!

I haven’t had this tea in awhile but I’m totally cheating it!

Steeped this tea along with a big chunk of vanilla bean pod (leftover pod I scraped awhile ago) and rock sugar. I prefer making this tea as a high powered latte with brown sugar, but I don’t want all those calories tonight.

Super super creamy mouth and lips! However, the flavor is pretty mild from all the vanilla I added. Tastes like i’m drinking liquid cream rather than creme brulee.

Will Work For Tea

I got this a little while ago from a swap with Ninavampi and finally got around to trying it last night.

Brewed this smelled delicious – caramel, creamy goodness! The first few sips were decent but a little more hollow than the wafting smell. Thinking the taste could be bettered, I added a little sweetened condensed milk (SCM). Mistake! I got over zealous by doing that; lost a good amount of the caramel taste due to the heaviness of the SCM. I hate when that happens!

Next time I’ll leave out the SCM and maybe just put in a little rock sugar…

I was hoping this would be good because I love creme brulee but it doesn’t taste a thing like it. In fact, it tastes like peanut butter to me. I’m guessing I’m getting it from the green rooibos combined with the caramel, because when I even smell it, I sort of get it. It smells strongly of the green rooibos, with a bit of caramel.

I don’t get anything creamy, but on the plus side this is kind of a nice change from things being so powerfully flavored it loses the tea…just I don’t really like a rooibos by itself.

Thanks for sending me a sample, Krystaleyn! I’m gonna definitely have to try mixing the rest of it with Oh Canada.

I’m hoping that because it’s been awhile since I had this before, I’ll like it better with the rest of this sample. Just hopefully it won’t be “OMG NEED TO BUY NOW” levels of liking it.

I still don’t really get creme brulee from this, at least this time it doesn’t taste like peanut butter. I honestly have no idea what it really tastes like. Like a very sweet green rooibos, I guess. Maybe a bit of vanilla, but just nothing creamy, or caramel.

Oh well at least it’s gone now. Though I could go for some real creme brulee…

I drank a cuppa Creme Brulee this morning..I apologize, but it must not have been very memorable because it only just occurred to me to log it. I was looking for a yummy caramel-esque tea and was hoping this might be it. Not so. I had no trouble drinking the cup I prepared, and it was rather surprisingly flavoured like creme brulee (though I don’t have creme brulee that often).

However, it wasn’t memorable and both the beau and I declared we didn’t feel the need to buy more of it. I’m not sure if it is a problem with it being rooibos based and not feeling substantially “tea” enough for me, or if there was just something a bit off about the flavours. It doesn’t really matter, I suppose, but it does seem like the sort of tea I would have really enjoyed at the beginning of my tea journey, but at the moment it doesn’t really fit into my tea desires. Sorry, creme brulee!

This just really isn’t spectacular. At least, not for me. I actually have even more of it now because the DT near me was celebrating it’s first birthday over the weekend and giving out goody bags with a sample of this and Green Seduction. We ended up with three of them (I wanted the tins!) but that also means three more cups of Creme Brulee to drink.

I find the smell really unappetizing, though luckily the flavour is a little better than the aroma. At first I get a slight hint of caramel but mostly end up with a sugary icing-esque flavour. It’s definitely not memorable and for me, sadly, not all that enjoyable either. I think I might mix a bit of it with something more interesting so I can power through however many grams I have left. I believe MaddHatter recommended a mix with Oh Canada, which I might try, except I like Oh Canada! : )

EDIT: I think part of my problem with this one is that it somehow gives me a coconut sort of a vibe. Oy.

De-cupboarding! Made a jumbo pot of this – not sad to see it go, but glad to see a hint more room on my tea shelf. I’m finally learning to just hold on to the favourites!

The scent out of the bag was strongly chemical. Like, I kind of got burnt sugar, but I also got the artificial notes overpowering it. Maybe it’s a new batch and the chemicals have to settle/dissipate first?

Steep notes: 1.5 tsp. leaf, 8oz water, a splash of milk, below parameters.

Okay, now that it’s brewing any artificial scent has gone away completely. I’m getting a creme brulee smell! So I went ahead and tried it straight and….what is on my tongue GET IT OFF NOW OMG GROSS.

Seriously? Is that green rooibos? That nasty herby taste in my mouth passes for a tisane?
I need some milk in this STAT if I have any chance of finishing it.

Thankfully the milk seems to take away whatever offending flavor the rooibos imparted, though knowing it is lurking beneath the surface is really ruining the experience for me. Still – creamy caramel burnt sugar is really good. And at least it was fixable – though I probably won’t seek this one out again since it is virtually unpalatable in its natural form.

Two more rooibos to go – man I hope they’re more like the Birthday cake than this one.

I received a sample of this with my last DavidsTea order and I have to admit, I’m pretty disappointed in this tea. For one, it doesn’t taste a thing like creme brule and the flavors don’t really make a whole lot of sense. It tastes like a really watered down version of DavidsTea’s Creme Caramel. Pretty mediocre and I’m glad I didn’t spend any money on this.

Something I love about Rooibos tea is that I can just leave them in the water forever and they never get bitter or overpowering. Which is great, because one of my glass strainers practically demands that the tea be left in. I got it from work! Part of my company designs promotional products for other companies to hand out—etc, and they recently got a sample for a double-walled glass tea strainer that companies can put their logos on. Because I’m the resident tea drinker it was given to me to test out! I love company perks when there is tea involved! (and the strainer isn’t too bad, either!)

This particular tea is great on its own, with lots of flavour and sweetness. It reminds me a little bit of Buttered Rum, by David’s tea. It has a similar taste, but it’s like it’s red tea cousin. Quite nice! I liked it, very much.

The best thing about this tea was the green rooibos. The creme brulee wasn’t there so much but it was still quite yummy. Sample from Alysha

I’m sitting here with freshly baked raisin scones and a cup of this yummy tea. It just arrived today with my weekly order.

It smells beautifully… Sweet with notes of caramel and rum cake. The taste is very pleasant and mild. Having it with scones is a perfect marriage. My seven year old added a splash of honey into her cup and gobbled it up. Yum!!!

Creme brûlée is one of my favorite desserts and this tea didn’t disappoint. :)

Today’s choice for the evening was Creme Brulee… I’m really enjoying this tea. I love to add to it a splash of milk… just a little to not overpower the tea, but enough to give it creamy flavor. Yum!

I’ve been in a bit of a tea rut the past few days. Nothing in my cupboard looks good so I just drink water or juice. At work, it’s pumpkin chai, chai guarana, honeybee cocoa matcha everyday.
But I needed a cup of tea tonight and as I am woefully behind on my Advent Calender (which is fine, truth be told, I really decided to buy it because I wanted the tiny adorable tins for care packages) I decided to make a pot of this.
Amazing. It’s a beautiful golden colour and I tasted burnt sugar and creamy custard and delicious rooibos. I have been drinking it from bubble cups (i think they’re 6oz?) and I sweetend one, then drank one without, then sweetened a third a bit too heavily. But all three have been delicious. This would be amazing as a latte!

I thought this tea was very good, sweet but not too sweet, and had a nice flavor. But definitely a dessert/after meal type tea.
