Creme Caramel Rooibos

Rooibos Tea by DAVIDsTEA

There are few dessert teas more satisfying than Crème Caramel Rooibos. Smooth, sweet and creamy, it’s a taste sensation. And the best part is that it’s actually good for you. South African rooibos is caffeine-free and soothing, and it’s filled with antioxidants and essential minerals. So indulge in a caramel dream. It might be the healthiest thing you do all day.

Thanks to TeaEqualsBliss for sending me this gem! While I don’t tend to favor rooibos blends, one sniff and I knew this would be good. It smells like a caramel macchiato! I know there’s no actual coffee/espresso flavor in here, but it’s got an earthy richness that reminds me of fancy coffee house drinks.

I cold brewed this, which I really hadn’t thought to do but someone recommended it and I just had to try it out. I was hoping it would cut out some of the medicinal nature of rooibos, and lo and behold, it did! All the good woodsy, earthy aspects are brought to the forefront but the parts that make me nauseous are gone. Wellll almost, there’s just a teeny teeny bit of the medicinal-ness at the very end that I am willing to overlook because this is so yummy!

It is definitely caramel, and quite strong at that. Maybe not caramel candies, but caramel syrup: not heavy and rich, but light yet deep on flavor. It really really tastes like coffee too, I just can’t get the association out of my head. Iced caramel coffee, delicious! This is REALLY good, and I think I might actually be buying a rooibos blend of my own free will once my generous sample runs out.

So this was an unexpected purchase today, I went into the store wanting to get 4 teas, and then the clerk suggested this, I smelled it, and wanted to try it. Was stuck between this and the creme brulee, but thought I’d give this a shot for now, and maybe try the other one at a later date.

The dry smell is sooo yummy, quite caramelly, not much rooibos. Steeped, there is definitely rooibos in this tea, but the caramel reminds me more of a flavored caramel coffee, but without the strong coffee smell, if that makes sense? (Just read another review after writing that, yes, caramel macchiato is what I failed at describing lol)

The taste is quite smooth, definitely the rooibos is at the forefront, but there’s a lovely sweet caramel flavor that emerges and lingers in the aftertaste. Yum. Creamy. This feels like I’m eating dessert, but I’m not! I would like to eventually try a cup of this sweetened with hot milk to see how caramelly it tastes, maybe I will add some to the end of the cup. But for now, this is hitting the sweet spot, and is probably the most desserty tea I have drank to date.

Overall, this is quite true to the name, creamy and caramel, with definite rooibos. This satisfies sweet cravings wonderfully. Pretty good, I would maybe try steeping it a bit longer next time just to see how the caramel develops. Happy the salesperson recommended this one, it will definitely be drank happily!

Backlog – I had a cup of this while engorging on that plastic nacho cheese with peppers in a jar and Tostitos while watching the Superbowl. What a game! I could really care less about who wins, it’s one of 2 football games I actually watch during the year (the other being the grey cup haha) but at least it was interesting and close, especially with the power outage! And the boyfriend was impressed with how much I actually paid attention to the game, so that’s always a plus haha. This tea actually wasn’t quite the right fit, I probably should have had some cleansing ginger or matcha while eating that awful (but unfortunately tasty to me) cheese lol. Anyways, it’s a good creamy cup that I prefer having before bed than in the afternoon. See previous notes on this tea :)

Sigh. I’ve been writing formula sheets all day, now my hand is cramping up. I also have been drinking tea all day, but have been too busy with school to log. But I want a break for a minute, and I just made a cup of this (last one before bed) so I will log it. I am almost finished my sample of this, I really want to compare it to the one I received from Zen Tea Life, but that will have to wait for another day. This smells very nice, and will hopefully help me chill and focus for the last 1.5 hrs of studying before bed. See previous notes on this tea.

Backlog from yesterday when steepster was acting up – darn these sweet dessert teas! I’m ending up craving them so much! This was also a comfort cup as the latter half of yesterday sucked.. Anyways, here’s to hoping today is a better day. See previous notes on this yummy, creamy cup.

so uh this was supposed to be a tasting note…and on the way to get here i stopped by a conversation on FB and then i had to draw a picture…let me tell you…MS paint is a PITA! anyway i digress… i got to thinking..I dunno how many people remember that whole geocities thing where there were chat rooms you could hang out in and sometimes you had to wait to get into them and what not. wouldn’t that be fun if steepster had one? except then i probably wouldn’t get ANY work done… anyway that was a nice visit down memory lane :)

so this tea? not bad and i’ll certainly enjoy drinking it while i have it but it won’t be a re-order. The caramel is slightly artificial tasting to me and it makes me want my caramel black! Oh! this came by way of Joon through Cavocorax so thank you both! love trying out new teas :)

Thank you to Taite for this tea. Boy, am I in love with this one. I’ve tried quite a few rooibos dessert blends, and perhaps a couple of caramel rooibos teas. My favorite was TeaPig’s version before I tried this one. Yummy! It’s smooth, sweet and perfect to have after dinner before bed. I’m getting a lovely mix of caramel & vanilla — it’s sort of like a sugary frosting. The finish is nice and memorably smooth. The characteristic rooibos wood flavor comes out at the tail end of the sip. This is so good. I’ll definitely be buying a bag when I’m out!

I cold brewed this and it was super delicious. Sweet enough I didn’t have to add any additional sugar :)

Well, the world didn’t end yesterday so that’s good. What isn’t so good is this tea. I’m a David’s Tea fan girl in general, but this tea left me wanting. Also, I suspect I’m a terrible vegan for even trying it. Creme Caramel with caramel bits in it almost defiantly has a dairy component, but in my tea mania I wasn’t even considering that. Six years vegan and I can still make a stupid mistake.

As a rooibos it tasted fine as all David’s Teas are high quality in my opinion, but I didn’t get much of a caramel flavor from it at all. It certainly didn’t provide as rich dessert tea and that was what I wanted. As I suspect it’s not vegan anyway, I won’t be trying it again. I have a nearly full 50g pouch if anyone wants it.

I just got hit with an international headache, having to pay for interwebs in a place I moved away from over two months ago and for a time frame when I’m not even there. And with the threat that if they don’t get it within five days they’ll charge me even more, yet international money wires can take up to a week to process. My point? This calls for tea. Ugh.

I bought this like a-year-and-a-half ago, but I remember when I smelled this in the store, the waft of creamy caramel drew me in and I couldn’t say no. Dry, it smells so sweet and gooey, but of course, as expected, it has lost some of that charm after all this time.

I’m actually not really a fan of rooibos (and it took me a couple years to figure that out, after purchasing like 30 different rooibos blends), so the initial rooibos attack that hits me at the back of my throat when I take a sip is to be expected. But half a cup in, I’m starting to detect more of the caramel flavour. Now, memories of employees raving about how awesome this is as a latte are rushing back to me.

The colour of the liquor is a beautifully rich dark golden caramel. But alas, as I pour a second cup of this from my pot, I’m left with floating rooibos shrapnel, another groanworthy issue I have with rooibos. I’ll stop complaining, try to stop thinking about the interwebs crisis, and focus on the smooth crème caramel.

Have you smelled this tea? Well, have you?? If you have this tea in your possession go smell it immediately… it’s okay, I’ll wait.

I know, right? A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! My sister suggested this to me after hearing about my trouble with Alpine Punch and how I was Jones-ing for a flavourful replacement rooibos. At first I was skeptical, the brewed tea just tasted like plain old rooibos. Then I added some milk + sugar and SWEET MERCY it’s like liquid caramels, for reals! Liquid. Caramels. Why have I not tried this tea before?

I thought this tea couldn’t get any better…

Then my husband brewed me a cup, added milk + sugar… + whipped cream.

Heaven

Ever since the pregnancy nausea/vomiting ceased I’m finding I can finally tolerate rooibos again. Prefer this much more to Salted Caramel since when latte-d up it tastes exactly like those caramel candies that you can buy in bulk from most stores. Yum yum!

Can’t stop drinking this…

That is all.

Thank you to Doulton for sending me some of this tea. It’s totally YUM!

The caramel flavoring melds so nicely with the woody notes of the rooibos, which seems to curb that overpowering woody tone of the rooibos. This is more nutty than woody. It also doesn’t have that weird aftertaste. It’s just plain… YUMMY!

Thanks again Doulton! You rock!

Mmm! Another swapped tea from Doulton, and another tasty tasty rooibos. This one smelled nutty but had more of that woody-rooibos taste (the one that apparently you either really hate or really enjoy) which I like with sweet teas. Very smooth. I might try this with a bit of milk next time, I think.

After a bit of an unfortunate incident with DavidsTea today (Oh Canada), I tried this from my shipment.

This steeps nicely and has the perfect amount of caramel to counterbalance the rooibos. With a touch of sugar, it was spectacular. I’ll gladly drink this as a nighttime tea on a regular basis.

I’m on a huge caramel kick lately and this is genuinely tasty.

I really liked this tea. Don’t know why others don’t unless they are not drinking it strong enough. You could almost pour it in the cup, add some sweetness and cream and stir it up…then pull up the spoon and sip a super goopy caramel vanilla lavish mouthfull of what can’t possibly be tea…but is! Loved it! And no caffeine! Give this another chance but make sure you add enough to the pot with enough time. Goody good! Made me feel like a kid with a Sugar Daddy (candy)!

Time for a second pouring of this Creamy Caramel Rooibos so I put on my fuzzy long robe and fixed a tray and hit the good movie I had selected (want to know don’t you)…so…ok the movie was Mao’s Last Dancer…true story of a Chinese ballet dancer who came to the U.S. in the 1980’s…his life and all that. Beautiful movie and no subtitles. I ditched the new double glass tea cup in favor of a mug so that I could feel the heat and press it against my cold cheeks (-1 outside). Love the warmth and the scent of caramel and the taste of the oozy creamy tea all sweet with milk and sugar. Willy Wonka would approve of this dessert!

I’m unimpressed with this one. I might try again later, but not any time soon…

I have had a such a great tea day! All of my teas were so yummy! This tea is not exception…
The smell is just like a homemade caramel with a bit of woodsy scent from the rooibos. I was not sure the caramel would flatter the taste of rooibos but boy was I wrong.

After the brewing the woodsy scent had dissipated and you could smell the warm caramel. it was a beautiful red amber color. First absolutely perfection in a cup! This is such a good dessert tea, it had a nice mouthfeel and was smooth and creamy and sweet. You can taste the rooibos but it is very subtle which is nice, sometimes the woodsy taste is to much… but this has such a smooth taste.

If you want a dessert tea that has no caffeine and you like caramel this is a tea you must try!

I like David’s Teas very much. I was amazed by their customer service: it seemed that they sent a package from Canada to the USA in half the time that most USA companies take to reach me. They have got some amazing flavor combinations. They can do remarkable things with fruits, chocolates, and spices. I liked this tea somewhat less than their other teas but I don’t think it’s the fault of the tea.

It’s dawning on me that Rooibos might not be my favorite delivery vehicle for flavors that are at all subtle. Sure, it can handle the bombast of a heavy cinnamon or clove of deep chocolate. Creme Caramel is certainly creamy and as smooth as satin; it’s got a satisfactory richness and natural sweetness. It’s not as BIG in the mouth as other David’s Teas. I think that I have a natural affinity for the bigger flavors of the Chai blends. And when David’s Teas adds chocolate to rooibos it really pops! I would certainly recommend this tea for those who like caramel flavors and for those who appreciate a bit of subtlety in their tea.

This is one of the best rooibos teas I’ve gotten to try… Usually, rooibos has a strange botanical flavor to it… This tea is no exception, but for once, it actually works! This tea was nice and sweet, a good before bedtime drink. I’d consider buying.

I found this tea to be exactly what it says on the tin- creamy and super caramel taste. I added a tsp of rock sugar to the pot and it came out extremely rich- I feel like I’m eating a cake when I drink this! The rooibos keeps all that sweetness from being overpowering and gives the tea it’s lovely red shade. A good dessert tea.

I just steeped a sample of Creme Caramel that I picked up yesterday. It smells good…This is the first roibos I acctually enjoyed! Not too woody like many of the others…again, this would be a dessert tea for me and I think that I have to be in the right mood for it but I definetely do enjoy it. Maybe not permanent collection worthy but I would pick some up occasionally to sip a cup or two.

I haven’t been a huge fan of rooibos, but I do like the fact that it’s caffiene free so I can drink it in the evenings. So I picked up a few dessert blends in the hopes that it would grow on me and satisfy my notorious after-dinner sweet tooth (I figured buying tea was cheaper and more pleasant than going to the dentist. It just made too much sense).

This smells of caramel and vanilla; the rooibos is barely detectable which is a plus in my book. It’s got a smooth caramel flavor without being too sweet, and the rooibos doesn’t have that strong woodiness as it sometimes does. I was so excited that I liked this, that I decided to get a little wild and added a little agave and soymilk to the second cup just to see what would happen. Wow. It tastes like a liquid Werthers candy. This one’s a keeper.
