1792 Tasting Notes

drank Cacao Tea by Herbal Infusions
1792 tasting notes

Fantastical cacao tea, you’re next. I steeped this in my Timolino for over half-an-hour. I honestly lost track of the time. I love how despite it steeping for that long, it’s still piping hot in there.

I like this just as much, if not more, than the strawberry variety. I don’t really care that it’s on the thinner side. I just love the flavour. Deep chocolate. Reminds me of the hot cocoa my grandma makes with Fry’s cocoa. None of that gross overly sugared up hot chocolate mix.

Now I’m tempted to brew more before heading back out. Actually, I wonder if I should try leaving the basket in the Timolino and just sip it as I go with the dry leaf in there? This may call for an experiment.

Maybe more tea will keep me full too. Today’s a weird ghrelin-gone-haywire day. For those who don’t know, it’s basically a hormone which induces hunger, and unfortunately, increases during periods of stress and/or lack of sleep. I just ate 700+ calories for lunch and I’m still hungry despite waiting for nearly 45 minutes, but I have to suck it up since I like to aim for 1200-1400 calories per day. Whine whine whine. Let’s hope more tea will trick my body and make it stop.

Anna

I want to eat everything today, too. All the foods. Preferably twice.

Courtney

Yay! I love this one too.

Courtney

I felt like that a few days ago too. I would finish eating, and I would start all over again. I’m usually not that person, but thank goodness it seems to have passed now.

Fjellrev

Argh, too bad there isn’t a magical tea to counterbalance the Eat All the Things Syndrome.

OMGsrsly

Just drink tea till you’re sloshing, and you won’t want any food. Ahem. (Disclaimer: Don’t try this at home unless you are an experienced tea drinker. Or are willing to get Tea Drunk.)

Fjellrev

Word! That sometimes works, especially with herbals which eliminate the tea drunkenness problem, but it’s annoying to have to run back and forth to the washroom. :)

OMGsrsly

Haha. Yeah, I really didn’t think that through. I need to leave in 30 minutes to run errands and pick up a friend from work.

drank Milky Oolong by Tea Desire
1792 tasting notes

Last “milk” oolong in the Battle of the Milk Oolongs series. RIght away, you can tell this has a lot more fragrance than the others. And I’m talking creaminess, and almost caramel-like too.

Yeah yeah. it’s not a true milk oolong, but I really don’t care. What matters is how it tastes, and it indeed tastes lovely. I can see where others get sweetened condensed milk. It definitely has that going on. I actually oversteeped this as I was frantically putting on my makeup because today already sucks so much; yet, it didn’t turn out bitter or vegetal. According to my last note, this was a little on the bland side, so I wonder if that was due to a much shorter steeping time. Time will tell.

For now, I’m really glad I picked this one up.

Really sad sip down. I can’t wait to get more someday.

I’m really grateful HI offers sample sizes, which definitely makes it convenient to try out their stuff, but the downside is when you end up loving something, it goes very fast. :)

First note on this despite the fact that I’ve had it several times before. I love genmaicha. And I love LB. And I love chocolate. So I figured this would be the greatest thing EVAR. But it isn’t. I mean, it’s really good, but to cut to the chase, I think the oolong in this is throwing things off kilter, at least for my tastebuds. I’m not crazy over that mineral note, especially here. It detracts from the maltiness of the LB and the extra shot of cocoa from the cacao nibs.

The smell of the dry leaf reminds me of puffed wheat squares. But oddly enough, when I left the wet leaves in my strainer while I stepped out for a few hours, when I got back and went to dump them, I wondered, “What is this supposed to be? It kind of smells roasted, but meaty. But roasted chicken.” Weirdest thing ever. But hey, at least roasted chicken didn’t show up in the flavour.

Too bad because apparently roasted chicken is an option in the flavour profile list underneath. Good times.

So yeah, this is nice but I would have preferred it without the oolong, ultimately. I’d also rather have plain LB. But it’s still pleasant and can easily be polished off.

Plunkybug

I will try this one day. I have it on my wish list! :)

Fjellrev

Have you been stacking up the points on their site? :D

Anna

Can we talk about ‘mineral’ notes in tea? Are they like mineral notes in wine, i.e. anything from, say, granite to chalk, or is it more of a metallic taste?

Fjellrev

I typically get an almost metallic-like rocky note in oolongs such as the one in this blend.

Is it red wines that tend to have more mineral notes? I’m allergic, so I never thought of it in that way. :)

Anna

No, they are present in both whites and reds. I find them far more often in whites, but that’s probably more of a personal thing. =)

Okay, metallic-like AND rocky. Good, thank you!

Anna

This is pretty illustrative of why I find the term ‘minerality’ a little hard to pin down when it comes to wine (towards the end of the page). It’s so random! http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/06/style/tmagazine/06tdirt.html?pagewanted=2&_r=0

Fjellrev

Oh interesting, I wonder if mineral notes are more present in the drier wines then. I prefer off-dry.

That’s a really interesting article! I’ll have to try to pay attention to these subtleties next time I have wine, which is rarely.

Plunkybug

No, I don’t know anything about points on their site.

Fjellrev

Seriously? You sign up and every day when you log in, you accumulate points. Then you can use them for rewards like coupons and infusers and stuff. Plus I recently found out that they still offer sample sizes. So ultimately, they make ordering really easy. :)

Plunkybug

Even if you haven’t bought? Really? Huh, might have to look that up.

Fjellrev

Yep! You just create an account with an email address and you’re set. Plus if you have Twitter, or link it up to your FB, you can accumulate extra by tweeting and liking their page.

And thaaat’s a sip down, thanks to the wonderful Sil. This reminds me too much of Florence, of which I’ve had my fill, so it was nice to try this and know that’s it’s essentially another H&S tea in disguise.

One more sip down and I’ll be under one hundred again, and I’m totally going to do that today.

Continuing the Battle of the Milk Oolongs from yesterday, I’m going with this one today. The sample is courtesy of Angel, which I very muchly appreciate!

Compared to the Della Terra one I had yesterday, this one is on the floral side and not as buttery. Rather, it’s fresher and lighter. I know this sounds contradictory, but even though I always look for that luscious creaminess in a milk oolong—so the creamier/more buttery the better—overall, I prefer this one over previous milk oolongs because it’s fresher and lighter, and lacks that heavy butteriness. Maybe this is a sign that I simply prefer lighter floral oolongs over milk oolongs? Who knows.

Simply put, this is a dainty floralesque milk oolong. It’s beautiful, but like yesterday, I’ll reserve rating until I’ve tried all the milk oolongs sitting around. Thanks, Angel!

666th post. This kept staring at me, all evil-like, so I figured it would make an appropriate post. Too bad I only ordered a sample because I have one serving left and I didn’t really anticipate liking this enough to want more so soon. Maybe it’s just a phase?

Melted Neapolitan ice cream again. I kept picking up the mug and taking another sip in agony; while each sip is blissful, it’s simultaneously terrifying, because I’m inching my way closer… and closer… to the bottom of the mug.

Perfect thing to drink for this post, I guess. Plus I’m all decked out for the occasion wearing a Metalocalypse t-shirt, and I just watched an episode when I got home too.

LOL! Happy 666!

yyz

666 really only reminds me of when I worked on the bear study we had a tagged male 666 who we nicknamed the devil bear. When he was in his young and stupid phase we caught him almost everyday in the live traps we had in the capture recapture study. Lucky for him he spent most of his time in the wildlife reserve part of the study otherwise I don’t know if he would have made it to 5. Despite that he would sometimes wander into our field camp, but never really caused any problems.

I hate it when you end up loving the one you bought the least of. Especially now as I have restricted my buying.

OMGsrsly

Woo, 666! :D

gmathis

It’s the Baptist Sunday School teacher gene (runs deep in the DNA) in me, but I had to write 667 really fast after I wrote 666 so I didn’t land there :)

Stephanie

Also, Metalocalypse, YAY!

TeaLady441

Oh yeah – Metalocalypse!!!

Indigobloom

Happy 666th note!!!

Fjellrev

yyz, that sounds like an interesting study. And I agree, I bought samples just for the time being so it’s kind of annoying when this happens, especially when you’re trying to watch your money.

Nice to see Metalocalypse fans here!

drank Violet Black Tea by Simpson & Vail
1792 tasting notes

I’m sipping on this while I’m impatiently waiting for my supper to be ready so I can scarf it down and get back to work. Mmm, violet. It could use a better base, though.

Courtney

I was starved tonight! I tried waiting patiently for J to get home, but ended up giving in and eating without him. Whoops! :P

Fjellrev

Aww! Sometimes you can’t help it.

Courtney

I couldn’t seem to get enough to eat tonight. So bizarre. Now I’m back on tea and water for the rest of the evening.

I realized that I have three milk or milk-like oolongs lying around that I’ve yet to review, so why not start a Battle of the Milk Oolongs, starting with this one. I picked this up last spring and somehow haven’t opened it until now.

The smell of the dry leaf is more floralesque than expected. The taste is more buttery than milky. The creaminess comes out a little more as it cools but I’m not sure how I feel about the balance of the notes here. I’m going to reserve rating any of the so-called milk oolongs until I’ve tried them all.

To add onto my note, the second steep is nicer. It’s on the sweeter side and just simply more delicate.

Taking a supper break but need to head back soon. I’m overstaying my welcome at my own damn home haha.

The second I ripped open the parcel, I smelled strawberry. Strongly. I ordered both this and Strawberry Justice but I had a feeling that it was this one that was giving off the strong strawberry note.

I let this steep for upwards of half an hour whilst I was preparing my supper.

Seriously like melted Neapolitan ice cream. Each sip lends an initial sweet, strawberry cream note, then the cacao steps in afterwards. I’m glad the strawberry isn’t overly artificial. I mean, it is a bit, but not like chemicals per sé.

This is really neat. I look forward to try HI’s other cacao blends. I was able to try Tisano’s cacao tea at the Victoria tea fest last year, since Tea Sparrow was offering it, and I really liked it but passed on it. So it’s nice to revisit the whole idea of steeping cacao bean shells.

Courtney

I love this one and the original. :)

Fjellrev

Ah, so it must have set the bar high for the others!

Indigobloom

I have a packet of this in my waiting to try pile… I’m nervous because I didn’t like the mint version and really want to strawberry to pull through for me, so I’ve been putting it off!

Indigobloom

*the strawberry

Fjellrev

Seems like a lot of Steepsterites don’t care for the mint version. Now I’m apprehensive to try it. All I know is I definitely liked this one more than I thought I would, so let’s hope you’ll like it too. :)

Indigobloom

Hehe thanks! You as well :D
