So I didn’t go to bed until nearly 5am because of a Formula 1 race, and then I had a weird dream where you could go to McDonalds and have Adagio tea. Because if you could sit down and have tea, a fast food place is the spot to do it.

I’ve been meaning to try this sample for awhile now, it smells amazing, but the taste is…very off. It tastes like pepper. Pepper and just a little citrus. It’s so definitely the oolong that is making it taste like pepper. And it’s kind of gross. I’m hoping letting it cool off will make it better.

It’s disappointing because I just picked up a six pack of San Pellegrino’s grapefruit soda for $1.50!! I don’t understand why it’s being discontinued because it tastes so good that I am drinking a second can today while drinking grapefruit tea and now I want a legitimate grapefruit.

My jaw is absolutely killing me tonight, and I don’t know what happened. I’ve had a problem that I’m sure is TMJ since I had braces and they put some robotic looking thing in my mouth to try to pull back an overbite. I’ve complained to my dentist before and I’m “too young to have jaw problems.” So if I end up at an urgent care place tomorrow because I’m crying we’ll see how that goes. There are periods where it’s feeling like it’s trying to separate from the rest of my skull, not even kidding.

Now it’s cooled and I still get the strong pepper notes. It’s not that terrible but I’d like just a bit more grapefruit from it.

Smells amazing! You can really smell the orange they added to it and it mixes very well with the scent of the grapefruit.

The taste is that of fruity pebbles. It makes for a great breakfast tea and I could see that with maybe a little sugar it would make a nice dessert tea.

Another from the box o’ tea I bought from LiberTeas a long time ago. I am surprised I didn’t drink this one up right away, actually. Grapefruit is something I really enjoy (though I am selective about it). I’ve only had grapefruit flavour in tea once or twice before so it is something I am interested in. Unfortunately, this is a sample that picked up weird odours in storage and I am not getting any grapefruit in the dry leaf or steeped aroma. I think this one might be a write-off.

I tend to enjoy dark oolongs though, so I persist with the knowledge that this probably won’t be an accurate tasting. The liquor on this one is yellowy orange and doesn’t give off a scent I can identify. I think the buttered popcorn from 52Teas might have gotten into this one, based on the smell.

Tastes give a slight sense of citrus and a hint of oolong at the end, but otherwise there is just some vague and undefinable sweetness and warm water – this is definitely a case of bad sample storage (Whoops). No numerical rating on here, I think I’ll just toss the rest of it. This would be a prime example of why I should not buy any more tea until I finish all I have!

Okay you guys… so… I went to a tearoom here in Milwaukee called Anaba Tearoom.

Very cool place! (Top floor is a greenhouse, main floor is a garden room, and basement is a beautiful teahouse.) I did my typical cafe/restaurant thing, and asked if they had anything excellent/unique that wasn’t on the menu. Sure enough! I ordered two of the options I was given…
-First Flush Houjicha (glorious)
-Grapefruit Oolong (magnificent) (especially paired with the ginger-apple-peanut butter sandwich that I had)

So I asked my server where this mystical Grapefruit Oolong came from. Adagio? Adagio! That’s what she hinted toward at least. So I’m not certain, but I believe it was an Adagio tea. Loved it!

I’ve had a grapefruit oolong once before. It was a blend of a Chinese green oolong (bao zhong probably – it was very crisp), orange blossom, and natural flavouring. It was good, but not nearly as good.

So I’m wondering…

Has anyone had the Adagio Grapefruit Oolong… or any other grapefruit oolongs (or similar teas) that you would recommend?
I’d adore your help! :)

Needed some tea for writing cover letters. I plan on making a celebratory tea order when I get a job, that should be motivation right?

I’m not sure why I got this, I’m not a huge fan of grapefruit. I like it, but won’t go out of my way to have it. In any case, this is really good! It’s got a nice grapefruit taste that doesn’t overpower anything. If it was stronger I’m not sure I’d like it. Citrusy and a bit sweet, nothing added to this at all. Very smooth, no astringency. I’m still new to oolongs so I don’t know a whole lot of what to look for but this is very tasty. Second steeping was just as good as the first.

For my Oolong today, I thought I’d try this tea from Adagio. I love grapefruit… I love Formosa Oolong, so I am thinking this has to be the bomb, right?

The aroma is nice… woodsy, slightly smoky even, with light floral notes and of course, citrus.

The flavor reveals a hint of buttery smoothness which I’ve found to be typical of greener Oolongs, but not so much of the darker Oolongs. I can taste the deeper, natural peachy notes of the Oolong which blend quite well with the bright, sunny taste of the grapefruit. The grapefruit is soft in this blend, but not quite as soft as I found the grapefruit black tea from Adagio Teas to be. Perhaps the softer flavors of the Oolong allow for the grapefruit flavor shine through.

A decent Oolong, and I look forward to another infusion!

Finishing off the last little bit that I have of this Oolong. A very nice grapefruit flavor to this Oolong. Not over-flavored, it has a nice balance of grapefruit and Oolong flavor. It doesn’t come off as too tart, but it has a nice tangy flavor to it. The sweetness seems to be a harmonious combination of the sweetness from the Taiwanese Oolong and the fruit. The Oolong tastes a little earthy and has light roasty-toasty notes in the background.

I like this one.

Oh Grapefruit… Such a delicious fruit! So delicious, that for the longest of times I actually was positive it was called “Greatfruit”. I finally found out the hard way that it is actually grapefruit when I ordered “Greatfruit” and had a rude waiter stare me down and ask “Which great fruit???”. Hahahaha… Ooops…. So, once I got over being embarrassed and some reading later, I found out that the fruit got its name in 1814 when a botanist saw the Grapefruit clusters on a tree and decided that they looked like grapes. Vivid imagination I guess… Also, I found that the Grapefruit tree is an evergreen (I did not know that…)! Ok, back to the tea…

The small dark leaves that make up this tea are unimpressive at first glance. Broken leaves all a monotonous brown do not make for a beautiful blend. Thankfully, what it lakes in visual attractiveness it makes up in smell. It is sweet and citrus, perfect grapefruit aroma with a subtle woodiness from the oolong. Very appealing.

I brewed the usual 2 teaspoons of tea per 16oz of water. The liquor was a golden brown. The vapor rising from the tea carried whiffs of citrusy goodness.

The taste lived up to the smell. Sweet grapefruit (reminded me of pink grapefruit, which I can’t get in Ecuador…) with just the right amount of citrus, not quite enough for it to be sour which was perfect for me. The Oolong base worked really well with this flavor. The slightly woody first impression and the sweet smooth finish that Adagio’s oolong base has was a great compliment to the grapefruit. A little brown sugar highlights the grapefruit and dials down the woody (which isn’t overwhelming to begin with).

I really enjoyed this cup. It is perfect to go with breakfast it you aren’t in the mood for something creamy!

I only have a sample of this tea, but I believe I will be ordering more the next opportunity I have to put in an order from Adagio!

Also, I still think Grapefruit should be called Greatfruit instead! ; )

Having tasted the black savant, flavors, green savant and most of the herbal sampler (just lemongrass to go and I’m not in the mood for that just now), I’m moving along to the next set of Adagio samples. This is the first of the flavored oolongs.

I really love oolongs, but I don’t drink them as much these days as other things, mostly because they’re something of a production to drink with the multiple steeps, and I just haven’t felt relaxed enough lately to sit with a tea through four or more steeps.

This one has very twiggy coarse dark leaves with flecks of grapefruit peel among them. It smells like a tree scented with grapefruit.

The liquor is a light amber/yellow and it has a strong, toasty/fruity aroma though the fruity part isn’t necessarily grapefruit.

But in the flavor, there’s grapefruit and it’s… really nice? Surprising, in a way. I haven’t had a lot of success with most flavored oolongs I’ve tried. The oolong here is mostly the toasty/roasty background for a grapefruit flavor that sparkles along the top of the sip.

I’ll update and rate this after I’ve given it it’s due. I have to run off to dinner now. Trying a new Mexican place in the neighborhood.

Revisiting this sample. This time I took it through four steeps, starting at two minutes and ending at 5. By the last it was starting to get a bit thin, but until then it held up pretty well. It seemed less grapefruity today, but was still enjoyable and refreshing.

I don’t find this a particularly complex oolong. It didn’t seem to evolve from steep to steep; it was pretty much the same in flavor from first to last. My experience of the tea base is of a fairly typical Formosa Oolong in flavor, at least superficially, but without the depth of some I’ve had. That said, the grapefruit flavor is really the reason to drink this as it goes very nicely with the base. The lack of complexity in the base is probably a plus in that respect.

The multiple steeps I put this through straddled my dinner, and the food brought out the grapefruit flavor a bit more.

I’m mildly surprised that I like this as much as I do. I’m adding it to the list for a restock when I finally come out of lockdown.

Adagio sent me this as a nice sample! The smell is wonderful! Grapefruit always reminds me of breakfast so this had to do as a morning, start off tea. I am always afraid of the grapefruit being too overpowering of the tea flavor or being too bitter, but this actually blends nicely with the oolong :] It’s not too strong and you can still taste the oolong.

This is the first of the new teas from my Adagio order.

Hmm, how to I describe this tea? Well when I was steeping it the tea smelled of grapefruit but also of something vaguely spicy. The taste is harder to describe; I get the citrus taste of grapefruit, though thankfully without the sourness. But there’s also an odd taste that makes me think of wood (it’s not as bad at it sounds – promise!) and spice. But oddly enough the flavour combination feels very smooth on the tongue with a touch of sweet. It’s quite different from anything else I’ve drank – that’s not really saying much though.

I dialed down the steeping time and this tea doesn’t taste as woody – I’m found out what the taste reminds me off. You know the temperate rainforest on the cost of BC (and Washington, Oregon)? The tea makes me think of wet cedar bark, slowly decomposing in the moist climate and covered with a thick layer of green moss. Or that might just be my inner Ecologist showing. ;)

I’m also picking up the spicy note a bit more clearly, it tastes like a mix of cloves and pepper. The grapefruit is just a subtle flavour in the background.

This oolong seem quite ‘woody’ to me. A significant portion of what’s in my sample canister would probably qualify as twigs rather than tea leaves. I wonder if Adagio decided to run the whole tea bush through the woodchipper!

I resteeped the leaves from last night and it’s more grapefruit-y than the first steeping although there’s still a hint of woodiness and sweetness.

I’m still getting the wood-spice smell and flavour but it’s not as pungent at this steeping time. On the whole the tea is sweeter tasting too and the tang of the grapefruit isn’t as sharp.

I decided to see how long I could make this tea last – I got four good steepings out of it before there was any significant weakening of the flavour.

Second steep and the grapefruit flavour has really come to the fore while the other flavours have retired politely into the background.

This one is actually a pretty delicious oolong, particularly in the summer- and it’s divine iced. I’m enjoying how the lightness and even clean feeling of the oolong combines with the brightness of the grapefruit. And sniffing the pouch is a kind of aromatherapy. I keep accidentally oversteeping this one, and then it starts to taste cardboardy- where is my mind these days?

Drinking this delicious blend iced this morning- what can I say, it’s hot hot hot in Houston! Iced drinks are my friend this week. I love this combination of flavors. I can’t remember the last time I liked something from Adagio this much.

Many thanks to Jillian for this :D

I can definitely tell this has an oolong base. The deep amber liquor has a woodsy, citrus flavor with a bit of a…ginger kick? There’s no ginger listed in the ingredients though. Interesting. And if I didn’t know this was supposed to be grapefruit I don’t think I would have been able to tell. Overall, a nice oolong with a bit of a surprise in store for those who don’t read tea reviews XD

There’s a wonderful scent of citrus that hits you as soon as you open the tin, and gets deeper as it steeps. Lovely and vibrant orange-brown color and wonderful, oolong taste with a crisp hit of citrus.

This was a surprise from MadelineAlyce…

The dry leafs were very strong of citrus and grapefruit, which is nice because it’s a nice head cleaner in the morning. As for the past few morning, i have had such a migraine and i have almost been catatonic, so my housemate woke me up at about 8 pm and asked me if i wanted a cup of tea, which i did, so i peeled myself off the couch and did something…made tea.

Nice and sweet with a little acid. Citrus filled grapefruit fills my tastebuds full of life.
thank you to miss Alyce for this sample…it’s awesome.

I love Oolong. I find it a very hard formula to ruin. You take Oolong and you add yet another pleasant flavor, smell, etc… to it and presto! Another hit tea. I think tea companies go to some silly extremes with this, but on the whole it’s a sound concept.

First let me say that this tea, in the bag, smells incredible. The citrus makes my eyes water and I love grapefruit. And that’s what it is, that pledge-strength citric-centric wonderful clean smell. I was disappointed in that the brewed tea has little or no smell whatsoever(either that or I’m suffering from the nose equivalent of snow-blindness).

The liquor is that familiar ole copper-bronze which is Oolong tea.
The flavor is literally the best “flavored” tea that I can remember tasting in recent history. It’s not artificial as so many flavored teas are. The flavor doesn’t destroy the fact that it is, at heart, an Oolong tea. And most importantly it fits well with Oolong. I’m trying later some other “flavored” Oolong teas from Adagio, which I don’t expect to work nearly as well.

In closing, for some reason(and I didn’t see this coming), Grapefruit and Oolong are like chocolate and peanut butter, toast and jam and all those other holy combinations.

Peace,
-Sinny

The dry leaves are brown and black with some stems and plenty of grapefruit pieces. The aroma the ingredients provide is tart and light but with overtones of sweetness.

The liquor brews a deep brown-amber with tinges of yellow around the outside. The aroma becomes more savory but is essentially the same as the dry profile holding on to the tart grapefruit overtones and a mild sweetness.

The flavor is smoother than expected. There is a simple bite at the tip of the tongue and some light dryness as well, but very little astringency. The tail keeps going and going with a tart dryness remaining persistent. The grapefruit sweetness holds for the first few moments but dissipates somewhat quickly.

I would recommend this tea to any fan of Oolong, Grapefruit, fruit flavored teas and Darjeeling teas.

This is very very nice. Robust, full body. Subtle grapefruit flavor. Not acidic or astringent at all. Would like to see a LITTLE more grapefruit come through, and it may in the second steeping as some others have said. Will be sure to post another tasting note when I try that.

Prepared in Adagio IngenuiTEA teapot.

Simply great.

Not bad, but not as awesome as I was expecting. I thought it might be something like – the appropriately named – “Adagio” tea from Lupicia, very grapefruity and citrusy both in smell and taste. The smell of the leaves initially (out of water) was great. When they got into the cup the lost a lot of that pizzazz that I was expecting. The flavour as you drink it is also not as strong and powerful as I had hoped. The taste was pretty nice, but after having that Adagio or some of the other Grapefruity teas from Lupicia, I was expecting a bit more punch. Nice, but not life-changing.

This was good, but I don’t care for grapefruit. Although, it had more of just a general citrus flavor. (Which I don’t prefer either.) Don’t get me wrong though – it was still pretty good.

I’m pretty sure I am an oolong fan now. I seem to be okay with each one I try!

Annathy

Tastes much like the black tea grapefruit without the tones of the black tea. These teas, at least for me, require sweetener to pull the full taste of the grapefruit to the surface.
