Hot Buttered Banana Bread

Black Tea by 52teas

Here’s our premium black teas blended with real freeze-dried bananas, chopped walnuts and natural flavors. The banana is a bit strong on the nose, but the bread, walnuts and touch of butter are all there in the cup. This is an awesome tea, probably even better with a touch of cream and sugar. I’m looking forward to all of your reviews on Steepster.

1 tsp. to 8 oz water.
This was right on for scent out of the package – the bananas were overwhelming (I can see where people thought they smelled like runts) but it also smelled nutty, which is a combination I often associate with banana bread. The liqour is a light yellowish brown at this steep time. The steeped tea smells…bready. Wow!

The first sip tastes just like banana bread out of the oven! My mom used to make it all the time when I was little and her recipe tasted just like this! I did add 1 tsp. of honey (I would do this to banana bread if it was warm, too, so I tried this for accuracy as well as to sweeten) and now I am in love.

Amazing…going to see how a second steep goes…

ETA- the second steep, when done for around 10-12 minutes, still manages to give off a banana flavor, though fainter than the first go round. Man, this is good. I never manage to drink tea this fast!

This is up there on my ‘top 5’ 52teas list. Mostly because with milk and sugar this tastes exactly like the banana bread my mom made when I was little (that I asked for instead of a birthday cake one year, incidentally, because I loved it SO MUCH).

I’m rationing this one out, though, as this is not in the permanent collection (NOOOOOO!!!), AND I’m low in the funds department probably until the middle of the year (at least). But as soon as I get a regular paycheck and graduate, I will likely be going in for a full pound.

Nostalgia is a powerful, powerful thing.

Lately I’ve had the biggest sweet tooth, especially at night. I usually want something desserty but we don’t have sweet stuff on hand because, well, I normally prefer salt. But luckily I have plenty of dessert teas that can fill that void!

This one was prepped with brown sugar and milk at my usual parameters.

What I love about this particular blend is that each cup is a surprise in terms of what note sticks out the most. Sometimes it’s the banana, sometimes the bread/walnut, sometimes the butter. Today I get butter and then banana, but I pretty much enjoy it any way it comes. It isn’t one of the 52teas main blends, though, which makes me sad, as I only have a few cups left. :( Pretty sure I’ll have to suck it up and by a pound of it when that happens.

3 tsp. leaf, 500 ml. water, milk and sugar added.

The bread aspect is a ghost of its former self, but buttery nutty banana isn’t really a bad consolation prize. I still have about 2 more cups left, so that makes me happy at least. I’m running out of all my 52Teas blends at the same time, it seems. At least this will likely justify placing a huge order in the near future!

This one has lost the “bread” flavor over time, but it was still a good banana flavored black tea. Added some milk and enjoyed it really freaking early (can’t wait until I go into night shifts!) for my first day in the hospital. Woo hoo for gainful employment – even if it does mean a 5 AM wake up call.

Weather is still cool, and it’s breakfast tea time!

8 oz. of water to 1 tsp. tea.
This tastes as fabulous as I remember – buttery and banana-y, with that nice nutty undertone. I’m not getting the “bread” part as much this go around, but I’m definitely fine with what I do have.

It’s fantastic!

Sigh, summer. The only bad thing about you is the fact that I am unable to enjoy hot tea except at night. I love iced tea – it’s how I got my start on tea in the first place – but some teas are just better hot. This would be one of them.

I actually craved this tea after I had it the first time (the first time I’ve ever really craved a tea, I must be honest here) but I’ve been out of the house the past few nights and wasn’t able to manage it. I fixed that tonight. :)

It is just as good as the first time – a little bit weaker maybe, but I think the banana chunk (that thing was huge!) might be responsible for crowding out some of the tea in my 1 teaspoon. I steeped it a little longer to fix it and that worked without getting bitter, luckily. It still has that lovely thick and bready mouthfeel with some added honey. So very smooth and so unmistakably banana bread.

Upping the rating – this tea is perfection for me..

This is a backlog from Friday – I took this in my insulated Klean Kanteen (btw, if you’re looking for an insulated thermos this one does it’s job really well on hot and cold drinks) and went with hiking with my parents to Cloudland Canyon in Northwest GA. It was a fun little road trip and I loved sipping on this all the way up.

Prep notes: 16 oz. water, 2.5 tsp. tea, sweetened with honey at below parameters in the Breville.

Taste wise, I got the banana and the walnut but the bread was still lost on me this time around. I’m happy with the flavor as is, but I think over time I’ve lost that accuracy in flavor of actual banana bread. Will continue tweaking the parameters to try and capture it.

Really, though, this is lovely. One of my favorites from 52 teas.

Mmmm this smells so delish! It is a bit lighter on the banana than Monkey Fart and you can smell the butter as well as walnuts! Yummy!

After the steep, all I can really smell is the bananas maybe a hint of walnut but that could be because I just want to smell that, the whole house smells like bananas :)
It is a pretty light amber color for a black tea.

The first sip, I was confused, the smell is so strong but the taste not so much?!?! The first sip is a pretty mellow black tea with hints of bananas. I take another sip and sure enough you can taste the banana and it is juicy, as well as hints of something else, I think it is the butter or walnuts, whatever it is it tastes good!

This is a really mellow tea, the flavors blend together really nicely and you can taste the tea which sometimes gets lost in the flavors but not this one! After letting it cool a bit the flavors are more prominent and I really, really really like it. I think that I really enjoy a bananas in my tea, maybe Frank could do a banana creme pie flavor!

Full Disclosure: I hate bananas. I hate how they smell, I hate how they taste, I hate how they’re squishy… the list goes on and on. Occasionally, they’re pretty good caramelized in brown sugar… with lots of other stuff (like oatmeal) involved. I’m not sure why I “forgot” that this tea had banana in it… perhaps because I was really looking forward to the “hot” “buttered” and “bread” part of it. Which is really too bad, because i didn’t get anything out of this tea except banana.

The banana reminds me of the flavored fruit shaped candy you could get from 25 cents out of a machine at the grocery store and various other places. I wasn’t a fan of the banana ones, and I’m really not a fan of the flavor in this tea. I don’t get anything buttery or bread-y about it, and there isn’t even a strong black tea base (ok, I didn’t exactly expect to find one, but when I drank the tea, that was probably the first thing I noticed). I’m going to try it with milk, maybe some sugar, to see if it changes my opinion of this tea.

Thanks to LiberTea for passing on a sample!

Yum. Not quite as yum as the Pancake Breakfast from this morning, but pretty close. It smells wonderful in the pouch, and had a pronounced aroma while brewing as well, which was lovely. I’m more likely with most teas to notice the smell on the pour rather than the brew. So I had a nice four minutes of banana bread scent. The tea itself is wonderful, I think the walnut gives it less of a smoothness than I was expecting, but it wasn’t unpleasant. I definitely get banana, but not the butter flavor that others seem to get. Its very good. I really seriously cannot wait to try other 52teas. Strawberry Zabaglione, I have my eye on you!

Definitely getting the banana on this pot, which is appropriate, since there was a lot of banana in the dry mix that I spooned into the basket this morning. I did a four minute steep, and all is well. I’m finally tasting the banana and walnut like I should, though I still don’t get buttery from it. Ah well, two out of three isn’t bad, amiright?

It is a quiet morning, off from work today, and just trying to steel myself against the pain that will be grocery shopping today. You’d think there was a big food-based holiday tomorrow or something, from the craziness. Unfortunately I can’t put off the trip, since the grocery store will be closed tomorrow. C’mon, people, not everybody has family or friends to hang with or even be off from work tomorrow! I’m a bit bitter, can you tell? Just like the base of this tea (see? still tea related)!

This is the last of the Hot Buttered Banana Bread. I’m trying to bust stash to make room for the new things I have coming (yay David’s Tea)! I’m getting banana and walnut on this pot, with no bitterness. There is a tiny bit of astringency at the end of the sip, but not a lot. I had to pay attention on a drink to notice it. Still don’t appreciate the base tea, but that’s okay. I’ve accepted that 52teas black teas really aren’t for me.

Backlogging from yesterday. This was the second tea of the day. Not bad. Not bad, especially as it cooled. I get more flavor from the tea as it cools, which probably means I need to stop drinking it hot (but I like it hot! No fair!). I still pick up a bitterness—I think I might be confusing the walnut flavor for bitterness, since sometimes walnut does that to me. I also got banana on the cooler sips, which was nice. Not too bad, not a repurchase, because I’m over my 52teas fangirliness. However, I’ll enjoy what I have.

Experience buying from @Ashley: I bought this tea from Ashley when she was selling all of her tea. I received the tea quickly through the mail and my package was filled with many surprises. Thank you Ashley!

Age of leaf: bought sometime in October, brewed up mid-November.

Packaging: 52Teas packaging is very professional: small silver zip locked bags with a clear front that has a 3” X 3” label on it which has the name of the tea, an ingredient list, and an expertly created picture of the food item that the tea replicates.

Appearance and aroma of dry leaf: CTC leaf with bits of banana; smells just like banana bread, incredible!

_Brewing guidelines: two tsp. dry tea for 16 ounces of water. I used a metal basket strainer inside a ceramic 16 oz. cup, such that I put a lid over the top to keep the heat in. Cup was warmed before steeping. Stevia added.
…………….1st: slightly off the boil, 2’
…………….2nd: near boiling, 4’
…………….3rd: boiling, 6’
…………….4th: boiling, 10’

Aroma of tea liquor: Spot on banana bread!

Flavor of tea liquor: hard to get the HBBB flavor on the first steeping when still hot, but when cooled I could totally taste it. Good flavor up through three steepings.

Aroma of wet leaf: I believe the aroma here was the same as with the liquor itself: spot on!

Overall: I do have to admit that I am not a big banana flavored person, and that is why I didn’t rate this tea as high I have a few other teas of Franks. Having said that, this one’s still a keeper, especially if you love banana bread as there is clearly banana bread flavor swimming around all over in this cup! Next time I will have to search for the butter, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all it I can find it doing the breaststroke right next to the banana bread. Right as I was in the middle of writing this up, I went to Steepster to verify something about the description of the tea, and I glanced at the number of ratings and at the overall rating of the tea itself (which I try not to do before I review and rate a tea); I noticed that there are lots of reviews, and the tea has a high rating. Wow. I may be a little tough on my ratings, but I am certainly with the crowd on the reviews on this one. You rock, Frank!

It is minus 2 degrees outside and this tea is perfect – so comforting with the walnut, banana and butter flavors.
