Southern Belle

Black Fruit Blend by DAVIDsTEA

She’s a peach.

If you order a cup of tea in the south, don’t expect a piping hot mug. Southern iced tea comes tall, sweet, and extra cold. And that’s just how this fruity black tea is best enjoyed. With big sweet pieces of peach, creamy yogurt drops, and sweet stevia leaf, it’s the perfect companion to a big bowl of peach cobbler on a warm September day. One sip and you’ll swear you’ve been transported to a porch swing in Georgia. Seersucker suit and panama hat not included.

Wow another win with me and DT today! Thank you Cedes for this sample! I rather like this one a lot!
Its creamy, sweet, and note I do not normally like the Stevia in DT but this is fitting here!
I could drink more of this! There is even a wine like flavor to it.
Very nice.
Thanks again Cedes!

Amanda sent me some of this one and it smells really yummy!

Much like a Creamy Peach Smoothie or Shake!

Once infused this is a green-orange-brown type color interrupted by floaties and textures galore! I will chalk it up to the Yogurt chips! This has a black tea base but it could have easily fooled me! It’s extremely weak for a black tea base.

The peach and yogurt pair for a lovely creamy flavor that is for sure! The stevia leaf gives it a bit of sweet but not all that much of an over-all contribution. Nor does the flower ingredients – but that’s ok with me.

The peach flavor is right-on but there are other factors in this tea that doesn’t seem to shine thru much or at all. Having said that – the overall peach-goodness is nice!

For some reason I got this confused with Prairie Berry and made it as one of my cold brews last night because I was craving berry tea. Why I thought this was a berry tea I’m not sure—did those two come out the same time? Either way I really like Prairie Berry yet I seem not to have logged it. Mysterious!

Anyway, I got a sample of this from TeaEqualsBliss—either from our swap or the TTB, which arrived together. I really need to start logging my samples when I get them so I can keep track of everything, sigh. I’m so unorganized! I used to have a spreadsheet for all my teas (well I guess I still do), but I stopped logging teas in it once I got to 300. Laziness and tea organization do not go well together.

Anyway, this tea! It’s peach. Very peach. I don’t mind peach teas but they are not my favorite, unless it’s peach from Lupicia which seems… I don’t know, riper than other peach flavorings? Peach can be so terribly generic tasting, it’s one of those really popular flavors and almost any bottled/canned iced tea will have a peach variation. So sometimes I just feel peached-out!

This isn’t bad, just not what I was in the mood for. It is nicely creamy but not as creamy as I had hoped—I think a hint of vanilla would do wonders here. I have enough for one more cup so I’ll have to try again when I am in more of a peach mood!

When I first read about this tea, it sounded like a Zing Me substitute. When I smelled it, I was convinced. The staffer at my local DT also agrees. This is Zing Me, minus ginger and with the addition of yogurt, which I love. It lends a creaminess that put me in mind of a peach Campino hard candy, if anyone remembers those. I really enjoy it, and think that it is an acceptable Zing Me substitute. Also, it seems to be really hard to over-steep as this one was in the cup for at least 7 minutes and didn’t get bitter at all. After one sip, I bought 50 grams to take home. Yup.

Continuing my flavoured black tea exploration this morning!

I picked a sample of this one up a while back but just haven’t gotten around to trying it yet, primarily because it’s a black tea. Really, I should have taken it to work, because that’s where I’m looking for caffeine, but for whatever reason I didn’t. Anyways!

The smell of the dry tea is pure peachy goodness. Reminds me quite a bit of Long Life Oolong (no surprise). I suspect that I would only ever need/want one peach tea in my cupboard at a time though. I think I’m going off fruit teas a bit, and being more intrigued by other flavours and straight teas. I’m sure this will turn around eventually though!

Er… I think I’ve let this one cool a bit too much. It looks like there are yogurt floaties in the cup XD Ah well, too lazy to go down and re-heat, so I’ll just try it! Can’t be worse than rooibos floaties (ick!)

Yum!! It tastes VERY peachy. Granted, I made sure that there was a lot, probably a disproportionate amount, of peach chunks in my brewing basket, but it definitely achieved the desired result of MEGAPEACH! With definite yummy creaminess. I really can’t taste the black tea at all, but given that this doesn’t taste like peach juice, I’m sure it’s lurking in the background giving this tea a fuller body than just peaches. Might also be that my mouth is still accustomed to the stronger tea flavours from the previous teas I drank, and so it’s not picking up the subtler taste here.

Ok, drinking more of it I can taste a malty sort of background which would be the black tea. Also – yogurt floaties not an issue at all. They may look a tad odd, but I can’t even tell that they’re in there, so they’re probably re-dissolving in my mouth or something.

I actually am really liking this tea! It’s better than Long Life Oolong (although that tea hasn’t been given a fair shot yet), and as Uniquity says in her review, it does taste like a peach Campino! Maybe a touch less sweet, but that could be remedied with a bit of sugar. Now I’m craving Campinos…. are they still around?!

ETA: Second infusion surprisingly good! Enough that I may try a third (although I’m getting a bit tired of black tea by now… go figure!)

Strraaange. This one tastes like smoky peach today. Not sure why; it’s in its DT bag and therefore shouldn’t have been contaminated. Ah well. I’m definitely not feeling DT’s peachy flavourings anymore, so am not liking this one as much as I originally did (but the smokiness is an interesting twist!)

ICED TEA MODE!

I just spent 40 freaking minutes stirring a dark roux for gumbo and managed to burn my finger in the process – note to self and others, roux gets VERY hot, do not try to taste test it with finger out of pan!

With that said, I needed a cup of tea (when do I not need a cup of tea?) right now, but not hot and I didn’t have any cold steeping action going on in the fridge.

I steeped 2t of Southern Belle with half the hot water I normally use, 4 lumps of rock sugar. Poured over a glass of ice.

MAGICAL! Creamy, peachy black tea…. though she’s not as pretty of a cup of tea with all the white speckles that were once yogurt drops.

I really need to drink down this tea. Either my tastes have changed or my tin of Southern Belle is beginning to lose flavor.
To be honest, this was one of three teas I got from my first ever purchase at DavidsTEA when the loose leaf tea addiction began. Not the same batch of tea, I bought 100g at a later date – which I’m working on now.

This tea was flipping amazing back in the day. Today, eeehh it’s good but not amazingly so. The creamyness is good – yogurt in tea is yum! The peach is okay, but I’m finding the black base is being a PITA to deal with as it is strong with a funky bitter taste. Maybe it is my tastes. Anyways, I did a 200F for 3 minute steep and the base is better, but less peachy taste.

This one smells delicious and peachy.

The taste is pretty good, creamy peach, if not a touch artificial tasting.

This is great iced as well.

That is all

I got this one out of the traveling tea box as well.

It’s peachy, but also appley smelling. The yogurt chips make the tea really cloudy. This tea smells peachy, but not artificial peach which tends to smell like cat pee, however not quite like a real peach.
This is quite good, but I’m sure would be even better iced. Too bad I don’t have any left.

This is one I would definitely like to keep around for the summer.

I can’t sleep because my sleep schedule is all messed up from this weekend’s Formula 1 activities. I was up until about 7:15 this morning thanks to the race starting at 4am AND having an hour rain delay after just 9 laps. Blah.

As a Georgia resident, I figured I had to get this tea at some point. I’ve had plenty of peach iced tea, because let’s face it, peach flavored black tea is fantastic.

In the bag it smells very funky…it smells a bit like a bad alcoholic drink. Around 3 minutes into the steep, the yogurt chips start leaving weird bits on the top of the tea. I really don’t understand the yogurt chips for this aesthetically displeasing reason.

Steeped, it smells like peach and I still get that alcohol smell. I am trying to recall if I ever had a bad night with some kind of peach drink and that’s the reason I keep getting that smell, but nothing is popping up. Or it’s the stevia, this is the first time I’ve ever had something with it so I don’t really know what it would smell like.

It tastes absolutely awful at first, like something burnt, and then right when I want to regret taking a sip, there’s a nice sweet peach taste. I think I’m going to let it sit and cool off and try it at least lukewarm before I throw it in a glass with ice instead.

So far, you are not much of a southern belle, Southern Belle.

I tried making this cold, but it still is just so gross. It just tastes like a really bad, cheap alcohol drink. If the stevia and/or the yogurt drops just weren’t here this might not be so horrible. I don’t mind stevia most of the time but it just does not work in this tea.

I’m not even sure why I grabbed this tea since I’ve been making peach this and that all day and now it’s ruined the good taste of peach I had. I’ve made a syrup for soda and a peach rosemary jam so far, and next up is jalapeno and peach.

Onto the swap list this goes, and into the sink the rest of the glass goes.

Okay they must have oversteeped at my place because I thought for SURE that this was a rooibos. For reals. Anyways!

It’s peachy! It reccomends it iced (that’s how I’m drinking it), but I really want to try it warm. I imagine it to be deliciously creamy due to the yogurt! Even as iced, it has this creamy tartness
at the back of the tongue that reminds me of yogurt. It takes a while to taste it, but when you do it’s really unique!

I’m loving this tea, but I really need to take a little home to see how different it tastes when I brew it before I buy a lot. The stevia leaf sweetens it just perfectly without having the aftertaste I usually associate with stevia drops.

As the rain clouds part and show me a little sunshine, I feel justified in drinking this super yummy iced tea. I great contrast to the fall teas! Try eet.

It gives the same wonderful aftertaste that I get from the Long Life Oolong – this fuzzy peach sort of taste that is delightful

I’m not sure if it is the stevia in this tea but there is a strange after taste when I drink this tea. Aswell as the white floaties from the yogurt. I tried taking the yogurt out and it was a bit better. Its got a nice peach taste . Tried this hot and cold I perfer hot but I’m not one for cold tea.

After a nice long evening soak the allure of something sweet called out to me. The winner this night was “Southern Belle”. I first came across this one in the last fall collection. It still captures me with its intoxicating peachy perfume. The taste is quite similar to enjoying a bowl of fresh orchard peach slices with a dollop of whipped cream. Like with many dessert teas the flavors are enhanced nicely while hot. I have tried this cold during dance rehearsals as a refresher too and it works wonderfully to perk the spirits. I can see how it fits the image of September, the tea is the perfect representation of the transition between the seasons. Not too bad at all. Delish!

In the dry mix you can definitely smell the peaches and yogurt, not sure how it will translate when steeped.

Hot: Not really what I was expecting… maybe I crave more peach and less yogurt? And the black tea base isn’t really strong enough, in my opinion. Maybe it will turn out better if I leave it in the fridge for a while…

Cold: Okay, I’m not sure what’s going on, but it appears the yogurt drops have reconstituted and there are now weird floaty bits all over. Not really putting me in the mood to drink it. Upon sipping (apprehensively, I might add) I do get a bit more peach, but still not enough black tea and the stevia is giving me a strange aftertaste. Gosh, why did I buy 50g of this??

My husband thinks I have too much tea—it’s taken over a whole shelf in our cupboard—so, in an attempt to appease him I’m trying to clear some out. There was only about 1.5 tsp left of this, why not use it up?

I’m not gonna lie, I’m glad this one is finally purged. It took all my nerve to finish the cup since I didn’t want to waste it. All I could taste was a weak black tea with hints of artificial-tasting peach, stevia, and cardboard? Ugh. Definitely not my favourite. Not even close.

Tried this again… was disappointed again. The flavours just aren’t jiving with my tongue, which is sad because I love peaches, just not in this tea.

I had my lukewarm, which was perfect.

I’m not sure how I feel about this tea. I opted for agave instead of sugar, which…I dunno. Agave adds a thickness and burnt quality to tea for me. I need to get a bit and try it out at home, but personally I didn’t see much difference between this and Long Life Oolong.

Still meh on this one. I am loving the peach flavor, but the yogurt takes it to a weird place for me. I’m just not loving it once the yogurt kicks in. Though the yogurt did curdle when it steeped, so that might be it. One more try before rating.

Bleh. The dry leaves smelled fairly peachy and just a little weird, but the tea smells totally plasticky and off to me. Maybe it’s the yogurt bits? I’ve heard this is better if you take them out. So I’ll try that next time. But yeah, the taste is plastic and weird too. I’m not even really getting any peach at all. :/
After it cooled a little I started eating some mint chocolate with it and it actually tasted better. Huh. Still hopeful about this one, gonna try it iced too.
EDIT: The second steep was much nicer and lighter on the weird stuff, but still not all that great :\

Tina S.

Last year when this came out I loved it. I drank so much of it in the late summer early fall as I clung to those last warm days. I revisited it today by brewing up what was left in my cupboard as a cold brew iced over night.

Disappointment is the best way to describe what I’m feeling with it. Something tastes off. I’m not getting the peach I remember as intensely and the vanilla seems . . . old? Maybe it was just some old tea and that was why so I’m not going to rank it, but still. Sadness.

Drinking this (hot) during my lunch break. Yes, it’s gotten to the point where I’m on Steepster at work. * Hangs head in shame *

Another of the DT teas that has a way better description than actual taste. I like the smell (even though its candy peach rather than real peach). I don’t notice the yogurt in this tea. Well, I don’t notice it flavour-wise, but I definitely notice the tiny white floating bits it leaves behind. Unattractive.

I find this tea slightly better with milk (damn whoever finished that off!), but I’ll probably just keep the rest until next summer for iced teas. Glad I didn’t buy much of this one!

This is pretty good but I don’t think it warrants a re-purchase. It took me a long time to understand that I’m not really a fan of peach flavours or scents. I love peaches so much that this seemed odd, but the peach teas I’ve had always seem to have a bit of a plasticy taste. This is less like that, and more enjoyable. It comes out nice and creamy thanks to the yogurt drops, and it smells divine. I didn’t really notice the suggestion of icing this so mine was hot.

Mmm peachy. Peachy creamy peach. This stuff doesn’t smell like a cup of peaches’n’cream when you first smell the bag.. but ohh man the liquor is amazing. I am so happy my order came in today! Stuck studying on a beautifully sunny day is tortuous. This way I can have a study tea party instead!
Dry: Mildly smelling of peach (though maybe my nose was broken due to the intensity of the Cranberry Pear tea I smelled prior to smelling this one). Its pretty with speckled yogurt drops and peach pieces.
Liquor: It smells like… a peachy liquor of some sort. Nice deep, thick color. I don’t have a problem with the top scum- but I am also drinking it in very small cups from a constantly heated ceramic teapot, which probably helps to keep the drops fully dissolved. It has a very distinctive smoky flavour to me. There is peachy taste in the back of my mouth and a slight drying. It’s good. I thought it might be sweeter then it is and I am glad it’s not. Man the after taste is very peach yogurt! Delicious. Not my absolute favourite yogurt flavour usually, as most brands sweeten the dickens out of it and have gross soggy fruit chunks.. except this tastes like a less sweetened luscious peach chunk version made with a delicious thick greek yogurt. YUM!
As it cools in my baby cup, I can really start to smell the peach flavour. It also gets a little creamier.

I steeped the heck out of this accidentally when I got wrapped up in a bunch of organic chemistry reactions. Grrr I need a Davids Tea timer and thermometer! Has anyone tried it? It’s been sold out for ages!

Sorry about the ramble. I am just so excited about my new tea arrival (and I like being distracted)

I needed a comfort tea so I decided creamy peach would be perfect.
Liquor: I think my palate has been tuned to natural teas a lot more lately so I can definitely taste a bit of an artificial flavour now, but I don’t mind it. It really is not blowing my socks off like it originally did… Perhaps it was due to my absentmindedness and failure to closely watch steep times. It’s nice though – peachy cream. I can taste a semi-decent black base that is slightly smokey/malty. Nice. Okay it’s growing on me again. To be honest – I like this more than Long Life Oolong. A lot more… Especially the aftertaste. The aftertaste alone makes me want to drink this tea more.

Got a sample of this over the weekend from Awkward Soul (thanks!) over the weekend at our OC meetup! And I am resolving to do better about logging swaps so samples don’t disappear into oblivion. :P

I steeped this one hot, because I apparently don’t read directions. It was good though. In a word – peachy. I wasn’t expecting the yogurt chips to dissolve so much so it was a little surprising when I poured opaque tea. I have a bit of the sample left so I’m going to try it over ice next time
